Mcdonald's wifi - Why the terrible marketing move? Everyone knows most coffee shops have free wifi... mcdonalds is trying to put every coffee shop out of business replaced by 'mcafe'; mcdonald's "espreso" coffees, etc. They recently made a move installing wifi at mcdonalds. Sounds very convienenet, and in truth this would be a great step for "Combating" the poor local coffee shops in rural communities, small towns, etc. But the very strang move was making this wifi connection not only available for PURCHASE (which ISN'T advertised) they made it a hell of a pain to use. Behind a terribly slow proxy, and difficult to connnect, login, and surf, not to mention there are no power outlets available for people to use at mcdonalds. I had to drive my grandmother for a 6 hour surgery about 100 miles away from home. Not knowing what the hell to do for 6 hours i of course brought my guitar and laptop and figured it would be a great oppurtunity to busk and spend some time surfing the web or playing online games at a mcdonalds.... well... with only about an hour remaining on 50% battery... doesn't look like that's going to happen... If any major suit from mcdonalds happens to read this, if they do some kind of customer satisfaction research... WHAT THE EFF??? I had a difficult enough time cyphering through secured connections to find out your wifi name is "wayport" (the company that they use to CHARGE people for internet usage) now my battery is dying, and the internet is SLOW AS HELL because of your dammed proxy! Do yourselves a favour and make everything easier and more affordable for EVERYONE... get a simple dsl or cable connection, hook up a linksys and name your wireless "Mcdonalds" FFS! If you log into your AT&T account (if you pay for AT&T internet) and a few other service providers you can get it through them At mcdonalds... Other then a few others, you have to buy a "prepaid card" or pay with a credit card. I logged in using a friends AT&T account. and it is slow as dial up because their security and proxies For those of you who couldn't figure it out my question is: Mcdonald's wifi - Why the terrible marketing move? or you could say "Why would mcdonalds charge for what most competitors offer as complimentary"

Do you think Ford or GM's bailout plan is better? Ford notes that their company has sufficient liquidity to survive the economic recession as long as it doesn't last too long, but requests a $9 billion "stand-by" line of credit in case they need it. Ford's plan focuses on plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, not mentioning hybrids and only briefly mentioning biofuels (flex-fuel vehicles). "The next major step in Ford’s plan is to increase over time the volume of electrified vehicles, as battery costs improve and as the transition from Hybrids to Plug-in Hybrids to Battery Electric Vehicles occurs. Next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, we will discuss in detail Ford’s accelerated vehicle electrification plan, which includes bringing to market by 2012 a family of hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles. Our work will include partnering with battery and powertrain systems suppliers to deliver a full battery electric vehicle (BEV) in a van-type vehicle for commercial fleet use in 2010 and a BEV sedan in 2011. We will develop these vehicles in a manner that enables us to reduce costs and ultimately makes battery electric powered vehicles more affordable for consumers." http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/Ford_Motor_Company_Business_Plan122008.pdf GM asks for an $18 billion term loan, including up to $10 billion by March '09. "GM will launch the ground-breaking Chevrolet Volt in 2010. As indicated in Table 8, GM is investing over $750 million in the Volt and its propulsion system, prototypes of which are currently on test at GM‘s Milford Proving Grounds. An extended-range electric vehicle, the Volt will deliver up to 40 miles on a single electric charge, well within the daily commute of approximately 80% of Americans." "General Motors will also continue to invest in hydrogen fuel cell technology" "The Plan includes further increases in flex-fuel and hybrid-equipped vehicles. In 2012, over 50% of GM‘s new vehicle sales will be flex-fuel capable. Regarding hybrids, GM offers six models today – more than any other manufacturer – and will introduce the VUE Two-Mode hybrid, along with the Silverado and Sierra hybrids in 2009. By 2012, GM will offer 15 hybrid models." http://gmfactsandfiction.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/restructuring-plan-for-long-term-viability.pdf http://climateprogress.org/2008/12/02/bailout-plans-ford-drops-hydrogen-cars-while-gm-remains-confused-about-ethanol/#more-4345 What do you think of these plans, and whose bailout plan do you prefer?
Will vinyl records become dominant and replace CDs and Ipods? Will vinyl records and turntables replace CDs, MP3s, and Ipods? The following article says that vinyls are making a comeback and that more retailers are stocking them: Some retailers give vinyl records a spin Email this Story Jun 9, 8:22 PM (ET) By SARAH SKIDMORE Google sponsored links Convert Vinyl to CDs Fast - Complete System. Free Tutorials Easy Do it yourself -LPs-45s-Tapes www.DAK.com OfftheRecord: Vinyl to CD - Simple & Affordable w/Original Look Free shipping + extras for $15.99 www.offtherecord-online.com PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - It was a fortuitous typo for the Fred Meyer retail chain. This spring, an employee intending to order a special CD-DVD edition of R.E.M.'s latest release "Accelerate" inadvertently entered the "LP" code instead. Soon boxes of the big, vinyl discs showed up at several stores. Some sent them back. But a handful put them on the shelves, and 20 LPs sold the first day. The Portland-based company, owned by The Kroger Co. (KR), realized the error might not be so bad after all. Fred Meyer is now testing vinyl sales at 60 of its stores in Oregon, Washington and Alaska. The company says, based on the response so far, it plans to roll out vinyl in July in all its stores that sell music. Other mainstream retailers are giving vinyl a spin too. Best Buy is testing sales at some stores. And online music giant Amazon.com, which has sold vinyl for most of the 13 years it has been in business online, created a special vinyl-only section last fall. The best-seller so far at Fred Meyer is The Beatles album "Abbey Road." But musicians from the White Stripes and the Foo Fighters to Metallica and Pink Floyd are selling well, the company says. "It's not just a nostalgia thing," said Melinda Merrill, spokeswoman for Fred Meyer. "The response from customers has just been that they like it, they feel like it has a better sound." According to the Recording Industry Association of America, manufacturers' shipments of LPs jumped more than 36 percent from 2006 to 2007 to more than 1.3 million. Shipments of CDs dropped more than 17 percent during the same period to 511 million, as they lost some ground to digital formats. The resurgence of vinyl centers on a long-standing debate over analog versus digital sound. Digital recordings capture samples of sound and place them very close together as a complete package that sounds nearly identical to continuous sound to many people. Analog recordings on most LPs are continuous, which produces a truer sound - though, paradoxically, some new LP releases are being recorded and mixed digitally but delivered analog. Some purists also argue that the compression required to allow loudness in some digital formats weakens the quality as well. But it's not just about the sound. Audiophiles say they also want the format's overall experience - the sensory experience of putting the needle on the record, the feeling of side A and side B and the joy of lingering over the liner notes. "I think music products should be more than just music," said Isaac Hudson, a 28-year-old vinyl fan standing outside one of Portland's larger independent music stores. The interest seems to be catching on. Turntable sales are picking up and the few remaining record pressers say business is booming. But the LP isn't going to muscle out CDs or iPod soon. Nearly 450 million CDs were sold last year, versus just under 1 million LPs, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Based on the first three months of this year, Nielsen says vinyl album sales could reach 1.6 million in 2008. "I don't think vinyl is for everyone; it's for the die-hard music consumer," said Jay Millar, director of marketing at United Record Pressing, a Nashville based company that is the nation's largest record pressing plant. Many major artists - Elvis Costello, the Raconteurs and others - are issuing LPs and encouraging fans to check out their albums on vinyl. On Amazon.com, one of the best-selling LPs is Madonna's latest album, "Hard Candy". Some artists package vinyl and digital versions of their music together, including offers for free digital downloads along with the record. "We've definitely had some talks with the major retailers about exclusives on the manufacturing end," Millar said of United Record Pressing, which focuses primarily on independent recordings. An avid music fan himself, Millar says he has moved to vinyl in recent years. "Once I got my first iPod ... I'm looking at my wall of CDs and trying to justify it," Millar said. "The things I like - the artwork, the liner notes, the sound quality - it dawns on me, those are things I like better on vinyl." He welcomed back the pops and clicks, even some of the scratches. "I like that fact that it's imperfect in a lot of ways, live music is imperfect too," Millar said. Independent music stores, which have been the primary source of LPs in recent years, say many fans never left the medium. "People have been buying vinyl all along," said Cathy Hagen, manager at 2nd Avenue Records in Portland. "There was a fairly good supply from independent labels on vinyl all these years. As far as a resurgence, the major labels are just pressing more now." In this game, big retailers aren't necessarily competing head to head with independent sellers' regular clientele of nostalgic baby boomers, independent label fans and turntable DJs. "I cannot see that Best Buy or Fred Meyer would order the same things we would," Hagen said. "They aren't going to be ordering the reggae, funk, punk or industrial music."

Is this why we need "OBAMA'S" health care plan? In the latest case in the government's campaign against abusive drug-marketing practices, the Justice Department charged Johnson & Johnson with paying "tens of millions of dollars in kickbacks" to a nursing-home pharmacy company to boost sales of J&J drugs to nursing-home patients. Prosecutors, in a complaint filed in federal court in Boston Friday, accused J&J of illegally paying Omnicare Inc. to buy J&J medicines and recommend their use to nursing homes. Under the arrangements, prosecutors alleged, Omnicare's annual purchases of J&J medicines nearly tripled to more than $280 million. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703657604575004902853166786.html?mod=WSJ_article_MoreIn With the new, massive, complicated, and secretive OBAMA health care plan, this ice burg tip of the pharmaceutical industry greed would have remained buried .... Remember .... HR3200 says: Sec 223 (e) CONSTRUCTION.—Nothing in this subtitle shall be construed as affecting the authority of the Secretary to establish payment rates, including payments to provide for the more efficient delivery of services, such as the initiatives provided for under section 224. (WINK, WINK) (f) LIMITATIONS ON REVIEW.—There shall be no administrative or judicial review of a payment rate or methodology established under this section or under section 224. Could someone read through this essay for me? It is really important! I really appreciate it if you can help!? I would really appreciate it if you could! Please give any tips or comments, THANK YOU! It is suppose to be an expository on this topic- 'Keeping an open mind allows for growth' Keeping an Open Mind Allows for Growth Have you ever wondered how keeping an open mind has affected people and the world? Well, it has allowed us to grow by developing our views, and improving our knowledge. Society and its views are very complicated in nature, and it all depends on open minds in order to allow for growth. The world is constantly changing with new ideas, trends, new innovations and advancing technology, and it has been our open minds that has allowed those things to grow to the proportions as we know it today. For people, having an open mind allows room for growth which acts as medicine towards our psychological health. When we keep an open mind, we allow ourselves to experience methods and ideas from the old and traditional, and, the new and modern. When people are exposed to those methods and ideas, they can experience other religions and cultures allowing them to be mentally rich. From this, they can sort and dispose of those traditional behaviours that restrain them from their own personal development. One example is, many people do not accept the idea of buying domestic and trans-border airplane tickets online because they are not willing to change or try a new method, or that they are afraid that someone will steal their credit card number through the internet. However, if they were open to the idea of buying airplane tickets online, not only would they learn that it is 100% safe, they would save a lot of time, get a better deal, and save the $30 to $40 booking fee (because most airlines in North America do not pay commission to travel agencies). In the global society, having an open mind is a key factor towards growth. The change in segregation of people with different skin colour and race is a good example of how keeping an open mind has allowed for growth. There is obvious evidence that there has been significant growth in this topic, since many years ago, discrimination against people with different skin colour or race was quite heavy and more dramatic than it is today. Technology is another area affecting the global world, that has flourished due to having an open mind. In the technological market, a prime example is Apple's iPhone. While other phone companies were focused on creating one type of phone, Apple came out with fresh new ideas such as a multi-touch screen interface, the ability to download applications directly to the device and its many other features all at an affordable price, which has allowed them to dominate the smartphone market as we speak. Almost every company is now trying to compete with Apple which has never competed in the phone market until the iPhone came out, which was a huge success. Having an open mind is absolutely essential for growth in ourselves and in a the global society. Without open minds, new innovations, technologies and new ideas would not have succeeded, and the world would not have grown at the rate that we have. Both of the previous examples required open minds in order to develop and flourish. Continued growth is only possible through open minded thinking and continued support for growth. What are the best eco-friendly & synthetic-free body soaps? I've been synthetic-free for 1 year and I've been using the AGNO olive oil soap from Mother's Market as it is 50 cents per bar and rated pretty highly on all green forums & is marketed as completely natural. However, the company just replied to my inquiry and told me that their scents are SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES from a company called VIORYL SA, which raises questions of phthalates and other toxins. I just need an affordable, safe soap...any suggestions or does anyone know any more about this fragrance supplier? Agno says it is the safest fragrance manufacturer in the world yet I can't find them online. The Body Shop uses a TON of synthetics unforunately, I had to toss a bunch of them when I found parabens in them (chemicals found in 99% of estrogen tumors, aka breast cancer). LUSH contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which kills aquatic life. :-( Poor fishies... any other suggestions? I might have to get the book "Dying to Look Good" out to see recommendations, there are some good ones in there. Just I don't know anyone who has tried them...
Essay-Can someone please check this over for me? That would be awesome if you could! I'm in Gr 12 English? It will be marked on a 6 point scale system.. Keeping an Open Mind Allows for Growth Have you ever wondered how keeping an open mind has affected people and the world? Well, it has allowed people to grow by developing our views, and improving our knowledge. Society and its views are very complicated in nature, and it all depends on open minds in order to allow for growth. The world is constantly changing with new ideas, trends, innovations, and technology, and it requires people to be open and have unbiased judgements in order for these to succeed. When people allow their minds to be undogmatic, they allow themselves to see, observe, and compare new ideas to old ideas. For example, many people do not accept, or are not open to the idea of buying domestic and trans-border airplane tickets online because they are not willing to change or try a new method, or that they are afraid that someone will steal their credit card number through the internet. However, if they were open to the idea of buying airplane tickets online, not only would they learn that it is generally safe, but they would save a lot of time, get a better deal, and save the $30 to $40 booking fee (since most airlines in North America do not pay commission to travel agencies). This is an example of something that has been created to help benefit the people, and if people don't give this method a chance, they will not be able to grow and improve. If people were fair-minded to situations such as the one above and others, they could compare the ideas that are beneficial and discard the ones that are restraining their growth. Being unprejudiced in society has been essential. Accepting people of different race is an example of how society has improved and developed throughout time. Many years ago, discrimination against race was a serious issue and caused many people to be treated unjustly. However, as people learn that being prejudiced to such insignificant matters only cause more problems than what is gained from it, discrimination against race has reduced. Technology is affecting the world and is an area that has flourished in part by thinking outside the box. A good example is Apple's iPhone. While other phone companies were focused on creating one type of phone, Apple came out with innovative ideas such as a multi-touch screen interface, the ability to download applications directly to the device, and its many other features all at an affordable price. This has allowed them to dominate the smartphone market as we speak. Due to the success of the IPhone, every mobile device company is now competing with Apple. Interestingly enough, Apple has never competed in the phone market until the iPhone came out. Having an open mind is absolutely essential for growth in ourselves and in the global society. The world is trying to improve its self by developing new ideas, and in order for them to succeed, our minds need to be impartial. We must not allow ourselves to be held back by traditional or customary ideologies.

Did he really inherit this from Bush? This current administration continues to claim that the economy is worse than originally thought; they place the blame on the Bush Administration's "Failed Policies" for eight years, and Obama supporters continue to blame the economy on what Obama "inherited" from the Bush Administration. For those of you in this camp, can you please address these facts? Please - no name calling, no ranting. I would like to see some citations and facts only. In 1999, the New York Times reported that Fannie Mae was taking on more subprime loans, which it said may not pose too much of a problem in flush economic times (that was 1999, remember?) but it " may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980’s." You can read the article here: http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/new_york_times_in_1999_fannie_mae_taking_on_more_subprime_loans_may_put_com/ In 2001, Bush, upon taking office, warned that the two entities were overleveraged; he said that "their failure could cause strong repurcussions in the financial markets" WSJ Article here : http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123137220550562585.html In 2003, George Bush proposed a new agency to oversee Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. This was reported in the New York Times, here: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/11/business/new-agency-proposed-to-oversee-freddie-mac-and-fannie-mae.html?sec=&spon=&pagewanted=print ''These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis,'' said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ''The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.'' You can read for yourselves about Dodd's sweetheart deals from Countrywide mortgage. You can read for yourself about Barney Frank's romantic involvement with a Fannie Mae Executive; you can read for yourself about the campiaign contributions made by these GSE's to the Obama campaign - One last link: http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/regarding_fannie_mae_and_freddie_mac_regulation_the_republicans_were_in_fav/ So my question is, How is this George W. Bush's fault? What exactly were the "failed policies" that led to this mess, that Obama inherited? Here's another question - when you weigh the apparent blindess/stupidity/criminality of the Democrats in dealing with this crisis and think that "maybe they aren't so stupid after all ..." and pair that with the comment made by Rahm Emanuel, "Never let a serious crisis go to waste" http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123310466514522309.html Ask yourselves, "Where did this crisis come from? What is the Administration doing with it?" Incredible opportunity - perhaps no coincidence. US Veteran and others - Yes, yes, I have heard all the talking points about Bush=Stupid and Bush=Daddys Boy - I specifically asked for citations and links that will show exactly how this is Bush's fault. I provided my evidence - where is yours?
Who is to blame for the subprime mortgage crisis? This is something I found online...I think it sounds pretty conservative-biased...let me know what you think: 1997 Fannie Mae is a GSE (Govt. Sponsored Entity) regulated by Congress. Fannie Mae buys mortgages from other companies. It is backed by the taxpayers for all losses, but keeps all profits. President Clinton loosens Home Loan Requirements. 1998 Banks begin making thousands of bad loans,0 down, no documentation, for 120%!(1998 –2008). Executives at Fannie receive huge bonuses if loan targets are met. Franklin Rainesand Jamie Garelickfrom the Clinton Administration are appointed to run Fannie Mae. 2003 President Bush proposes a new oversight committee to clean up Fannie Mae, but Democrats derail the effort. Rep.Melvyn Watt,(D-NC) Committee on Financial Institutions & Consumer Credit.stated, “I don’t see much other than weakening the bargaining power poorer families to get affordable housing.” 1999 -2004 Raines earns $100 millionin bonuses. Garelick earns $75 millionin bonuses. In 2004, Enroncollapses, congress investigates, Executives Skilling & Lay go to jail, for fraudulent bookkeeping. Congress responds with the Sorbanes-Oxley Act, more heavy regulation of corporations. 2004 An OMB investigation finds massive fraudulent bookkeeping at Fannie Mae. False numbers triggered executive bonuses every year. Congress holds nohearings, noone goes to jail, or is punished. WHY NOT? 1999 -2005 Fannie Mae gives millions to Democratic causes, examples:Jesse Jackson & ACORN. Fannie Mae pays millionsto 354 congressmen and senators, from both parties. Who got the most money? Top 4 Recipients #1Sen. Christopher Dodd, (D-CT)Chairman of the Banking, Housing, & Urban Affairs Committee#2Sen. Barack Obama, (D-IL) Federal Financial Management Committee Top 4 Recipients#3Sen. Chuck Schumer,(D-NY)Chairman of the Finance Committee #4Rep. Barney Frank,(D-MA) Chairman of the House Financial Services Committe 2005 Franklin Raines & top execs are forced to resign from Fannie Mae. They do not go to jail. There is no media “perp. walk.” They keeps all of their bonuses They finally pay $31.4 million in civil fines. 2005 The Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act is sponsored by:#325Sen. John McCain,(R-AZ)Armed Services, & Commerce, Science, & Transportation “If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.” 2005 Noneof the top 4 recipients support the legislation. The reform act is blocked by Democrats, never even making it out of committee. Noneof the politicians return any of the money, tainted by fraud. 2008 Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac go bankrupt and the govt. takes them over completely. Lehman Brothers, goes bankrupt from investing in bad mortgages. AIG get $85 million in loan guarantees, after insuring bad loans & projects. Taxpayers will ultimately pay BILLIONS. 2008 Franklin Raines is now an advisor to the Obama Campaignwhich wants the govt. to take over more of the economy. Did government involvement in the mortgage market work out? How will even MOREgovernment involvement make it better? Do you want to be Sweden? McCain favors revising regulations & loan standards, selling off Fannie & Freddie.
Would you pay $20 for the last few levels of your video games? Video game designers, developers, and manufactures have recently started a campaign against resale stores like GameStop and rental chains since they don’t see profit from secondhand sales or rentals. Even Bungie claimed large losses on Halo 3 because of video game resale stores. Game developers are now considering the option of making games to where you have to pay up to $20 (via unlocking the levels online) for the final levels of a game if you aren’t the game's original owner. Some companies have taken the idea further to lowering the game cost at retail and making all of their games to where a $20 fee is required to unlock achievements/trophies and the games final levels. Game makers feel that this will increase their profits for their work and help to put an end to some forms of piracy. What do you think? Is this good for the video game business? MY PERSONAL OPINION: If game developers are getting angry at the profit losses that they are taking because of resale stores like GameStop/EB, then they should stop feeding them promotional materials and focus it instead on pure retail outlets like Best Buy and Wal-Mart. Every time a game maker pushes a product with “bonuses” at a shop like GameStop, they are promoting the idea of selling it back to the store for resale when they are finished with the game. I have never been one to buy used games unless they are imports or for one of my older systems. However, I feel that a downloadable ending will limit the market more than game makers would like because there are still areas where the high speed internet connection that is required is not available or affordable.

Modern life is constantly changing with new ideas, trends, innovations, and technology, and it requires people to be open and have unbiased judgements in order for these changes to succeed. How Much will YOU pay for the Nationalized Health Care reform? INDIVIDUAL MANDATE: All the plans require individuals to get health insurance, with government subsidies or expanded programs to help people with lower incomes purchase coverage. New online exchanges would be created to help people shop for policies at more affordable group rates. About 15 percent of U.S. residents, or some 46 million, lacked health insurance in 2008, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.-----This is similar to requirements of Auto Insurance, http://www.compuquotes.com/average-costs-of-insurance.html----This bill will require YOU to pay for your insurance. How much is yet to be determined. EXPANDING COVERAGE: President Barack Obama and top Democrats in Congress say they want to cover all Americans, yet the proposals would still leave millions of people not eligible for Medicare uninsured, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. Under the House proposal, about 17 million people, almost half of them illegal immigrants, would lack coverage, the CBO estimated. The plan by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Baucus would leave about 25 million uninsured, a third of them illegal immigrants, the CBO said.------ How do you FORCE Illegal immigrants to pay for insurance? They don't pay for Auto Insurance. The uninsured costs to insurance are simply transferred to those who do pay for it.-----Again how much will that be? INSURER REQUIREMENTS: Insurers would no longer be able to reject new customers with pre-existing medical conditions; new restrictions would be placed on their ability to set premiums.----What are the "new" restrictions which will set premiums for private insurers? Is this a means to end their programs, thereby establishing ONLY government run insurance? REDUCING COSTS: The legislation is intended to lower long- term health-care costs for consumers and the government.----Granted, the more people in a particular program the less it will cost (LONG TERM), but the statistics point out 46 million will be included within which program? The Governments or Private? The additionally insured will no doubt increase the costs to the individual policy holder. Again how much will that be? All the plans call for greater access to preventive care, either with new programs or the elimination of co-payments, a change that proponents claim will save money by keeping people from developing diseases that are more costly to treat. They also call for more use of electronic systems to promote better record-keeping and reduce overhead costs.---Simply put this is Control over your day to day life. Standards will be em placed to prevent you from having that Hoagie with extra mayo.----Record keeping on a Government Run Nationalized Health Care Mandated fulfillment will ultimately undermine your INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY, no matter if it is in this bill or not eventually the Government will know everything about YOU. Obama favors a new independent commission to set reimbursement rates for providers who treat patients in Medicare, the federal program for the elderly. The Senate finance committee draft embraced this idea, saying it would reduce costs by taking authority away from Congress and making payment decisions less politically charged. Members of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of self-described fiscally conservative House Democrats, also support the plan.----Good Idea BIOLOGICS: Biologic drugs, which are made from living cells by companies such as Thousand Oaks, California-based Amgen Inc., would get 12 years of protection from generic competition under a plan passed by the Senate health panel and the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The White House had sought to limit the exclusivity to seven years as a way of bringing prices down.----Concessions made to Pharmaceutical companies in return for political clout in advance of the reform bill. In other words the Pharms said they would cut costs up front in order to get their return long term. COMPARING TREATMENTS: Legislation in both the House and Senate would create research centers to examine the efficacy of various health-care services, devices, treatments and procedures. None of the bills require the research be used to force health providers to adopt new procedures or policies to cut costs, which is an administration priority. Obama provided $1.1 billion in the stimulus act to fund so-called comparative effectiveness research.-----Teams will be in place to determine WHAT care (policy/procedures) is needed based on statistics for any particular disease. We all know statistics are only for those who read them not those who are a part of them. Differences PUBLIC OPTION: The three House panels and Senate health committee would create a new government-run insurance program designed to compete with private companies such as Minnetonka, Minnesota-based UnitedHealth Group Inc. and help reduce prices for insurance in the market. The House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Senate health panel require that the new entity ne
