Can anyone make a recommendation for a QUALITY, PROFESSIONAL Website Company? My website is currently hosted by GoDaddy on a windows server. I am in the market for a new website company that offers: - a minimum of 10 years in business - a solid reputation with good solid references - excellent customer service - a "staff" of designers as well as expert programmers - ability to write script for web form mailers (per Go Daddy must be in php?) - ability to convert PowerPoint presentations into both PDF and video (for viewing and printing from our site) - ability to add an administrator tool to our site so that I can make simple text changes and add/edit/delete staff members from our employee page - offer affordable rates Please, no referrals of students, new grads, independent contractors, freelance designers/programmers or mom and pop shops. I need a solid, reputable company with a minimum of 10 years experience with an expert staff that I can be sure have the ability to serve all of my website needs now and for many years to come as my site and company grow. Please provide company name and a link to their website. Thanks! Thanks for the input so far but I'm looking for a referral to an actual website company that can do all of these things for me (not a way to do them meyself). Also, if their email address is a gmail... well, they are not a full fledge professional company but rather most likely an individual freelance person which is not what I'm needing. Recommendations for professional website company referrals that can meet all criteria above would be the best answer to my question. Thanks!

Working abroad company information? Professional Animation / Joseph Spendlove? My friend is wanting to work abroad, Egypt. She has emailed a company and they replied within a few hours offering her a job, with accommodation and food paid for, she has to book her own flights and go as soon as. She has not once spoken to anyone over the phone or in person, and wants to just accept and go. No interviews, nothing. I had a look at their website (which looks dodgy, built on free Google websites) http://www.proani.co.uk (he also has another company on another free website in the same layout - http://www.josephspendlove.co.uk/) They tell you not to phone or visit in person, just email and they will reply. A dodgy point, surely if they are hiring you for 6 months they will want to see you and interview you properly before they say yes. I also cannot find any business information on the company - yet another dodgy point, whereas other companies such as 'playa-way' are registered and you can find information. I was wondering if anyone had any information or has dealt with this company before? Or the company 'owner' Joseph Spendlove (Before my friend ends up being sold for organs on the black market!)

I'm a latecomer at kicking off my career, where should I start? Three simple questions, but please excuse the details. I'm 24 years old, female, living in Jakarta Indonesia, and a sophomore in college studying communication management. I'm quite knowledgeable at basic business administration, public relations, marketing, world cultures, philosophy and public speaking, and am a gifted trilingual. Previous jobs I've had include hosting a radio talk show, producing a theatre production, hosting concerts and seminars as master of ceremony (MC), interpreting, translating, make up artist, and HR intern at a small company marketing consumer goods. The problem is, I've never achieved anything consistently significant in these jobs because they're mostly project based and I didn't network enough to consistently have projects on my plate. And because I always seem to be starting over, I've never made enough money to support myself either. Other challenges that have stopped me from launching a career were mostly personal, such as abusive relationships, family conflict, and very frequent international relocations in my late teens & early twenties. While I've done my best to detach my private life from my professional setting, I still subconsciously carry a lot of emotional baggage that I don't even know is there. This has affected the way I make decisions and relate to people. I am, however, getting help in dealing with this baggage, and expect that I will recover once I start seeing results in my professional life (i.e. reputation, sustainable achievements, and money). I had meant to start working last year, but abandoned a pending job offer orted the plan when I got trapped into producing a theater production for a businessman who casted this vision of a great theater company but did nothing to follow it up. Before this, my confidence level in entering the workforce had been recovering and I was excited about starting to work... but since the theater company didn't work out as expected, I feel like a loser who had been cheated on again. However, I don't want to create an identity as one who never finishes what she started, so we decided to press on by doing street performances for charity. In the meantime I will spend less time working there and more time on finding a real job that I love, makes a difference in the lives of others, and makes money. The thing is, at this point I feel lost, and need to recover my confidence that had corroded when the theater company missed my expectations. If I didn't feel that way, I could probably see my options more clearly and have more courage to make wise decisions. I want a career that fits my talent and passion (i.e. writing, speaking, and conceptualising creative ideas). Other than creative writing and public speaking, I don't really have much experience or expertise, but I do know a little bit about a lot of stuff and am a fast learner. People have told me that I am intelligent, good looking, and drive extra miles to produce excellent results. I prefer jobs that aren't set in an office, are deadline oriented but flexible with hours and methods, and facilitate me to meet a myriad people who are beneficial to my professional network. Anyhow, it boils down to these three questions: 1. What jobs should I consider, where can I learn more about them, and how can I network so that I can consistently have plenty of options when it comes to choosing my projects? 2. Which competitive edges should I sell, so that people will want to hire me although I'm about to hit quarter life and have limited experience? 3. What are some practical things I can do to pick myself up so I don't get too bogged down with the emotional baggage and have more confidence & energy to break through with my career? Thank you so much! God bless you.

Marketing Test Question? In a rare slip at Dell, Inc., a company known for its low-cost business model and close attention to operational detail, poor management of the average selling price resulted in a revenue shortfall in the second quarter of 2005. Basically, the company priced its computers too low. Though it shipped an industry-record 9.1 million computers during the quarter, the company failed to meet its quarterly revenue target. According to Dell’s Web site, the company’s climb to market leadership has been the result of a persistent focus on delivering the best possible customer experience by the direct selling of computer products and services. The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Dell, and its corporate headquarters are in Round Rock, Texas. A worldwide supplier of computer systems, Dell manufactures computers in the United States, Brazil, Ireland, Malaysia, and China. The company holds the number one market position in the United States, the number three position in the Asia Pacific/Japan market, and the number two position in Europe. Worldwide, the company employs about 64,000 people. Dell’s products include servers, storage, printing and imaging systems, workstations, notebook computers, desktop computers, networking products, and software and peripheral products (e.g., plasma TVs, MP3 players, handhelds). Dell’s service offerings include managed, professional, deployment, support, and training and certification services. Dell’s pricing miscalculations occurred in its computer lines. In 2005, personal computer makers were facing a mature market where continued growth was difficult. Worldwide PC sales were expected to grow 12.7 percent in 2005, but revenues were expected to grow only 0.5 percent. Such tepid growth prospects were squeezing PC makers from large (Dell) to small (Gateway). Desktop pricing was being forced down to new levels. Additionally, the notebook marketplace, which tends to generate higher margins, was experiencing price declines faster than anticipated. According to one industry expert, the quest for growth was forcing companies to test the limits of PC price elasticity. During the second quarter, Dell’s average selling price for its consumer computers dropped 13 percent, and the company experienced an average price decrease of 8 percent across all products and markets. Essentially, Dell was advertising its supercheap machines and offering revenue-draining promotions on the low-end machines (e.g., giving away printers with the purchase of even cheap computers). Dell would have met expectations if it had priced the 9.1 million computers it sold in the second quarter just $10 to $15 higher. But the company was operating in a share-building model of growth and was not focusing on selling the more profitable machines. This was considered an unusual marketing strategy for the industry leader—a leader that did not need to slash prices to remain competitive with rival offerings. Thus, Dell’s second quarter unit volume was high, but it undermined revenue growth. Though Dell executives insisted that these were onetime, easily fixable pricing problems, industry analysts wondered whether Dell was losing its tactical edge. In their view, the company needed to return to selling higher-end, more profitable systems and be less aggressive in the battle for market share. In a marketplace where PC pricing had become more and more competitive, with low-end desktops priced as low as $299 and notebooks dipping below $500, there was concern that the company had not been able to quickly adjust its pricing model to drive revenue and meet expectations. With competition heating up among notebook competitors (e.g., Hewlett-Packard, Gateway, Averatec), analysts expected that margins in the notebook market would be driven down. Though Dell had met industry expectations for profit margins on its notebooks, the analysts were concerned about its future profit margins in that sector. If they were to decline, Dell would be under additional pressure to get its pricing model back in line, while steering customers toward its more expensive computer products. Although the pricing error was a rare slipup for the company, it brought considerable attention to the operational detail required by a company as large as Dell. Q: After Dell's poor profit performance in the second quarter of 2005, industry analysts criticized Dell for engaging in __________, or sacrificing profits to seek market share. Answer price skimming predatory pricing keystoning leader pricing

Logo Design Company? We are a 10 yrs+ small to medium sized HVACR/IAQ (Heating Ventilating Air Conditioning Refrigeration /Indoor Air Quality) company that is in desperate need of a logo and possibly website design. I have tried a few companies but no one has designed something that i feel fits the image we would like to portray. We cater to the high-end residential market as well as the light-commercial market (think, convenience stores, department stores, medium sized stuff not labeled residential). Currently, we have no logo, no advertising program, no identity on any of our trucks etc., but yet we hold a golden (if i may say it) reputation where we're known. Now we would like to bring out the professional side of a company we've worked hard to build and it's seeming slightly difficult. Right now we're looking strictly for a digital logo that can be used in a marketing program. Any help you can offer would be great! I can provide more details if necessary. We are not attempting to create a brand to attract new customers but to further instill confidence, pride and awareness in the places we work i.e. Oh hey I know them! That's my HVAC company!! lol! :) Also, being completely incognito is unprofessional in my opinion. For example, if I call a plumbing co. and they show up in my driveway in an unmarked vehicle how can I quickly and confidently identify who has arrived? We are pros and our actions should be transparent, not suspicious. P.S. Have you ever seen a cable or telephone company's truck out roaming the streets at 12 or 1 am? What were your first thoughts? Yes, we have paid these companies to make an attempt at designing a logo. We have a budget but so far that has not been the issue. The issue rather seems to be lack of creativity. :(

My survey company's email are being blocked by yahoo and hotmail? I own a small survey firm that conducts web surveys. We do not do any email marketing whatsoever for ourselves or our clients. We only send emails to people in our client databases who have given permission for our clients to send emails. Mostly they are either customers of our clients or else are their members (my company does a lot of work for professional societies). We always offer recipients the opportunity to opt out of follow up emails. However, we are getting blocked by yahoo for a project we are currently conducting. It is a large (175,000) list that contains a lot of students (it is an honor society client) and I think there are a significant number of misspellings in the database, which may be part of the problem. How do I get my emails through to yahoo and hotmail accounts on the list? Since thankyoumaskedman did not seem to get it when I originally posted it, I want to reiterate that this is not SPAM. The emails I am sending are not marketing any service or product at all. They are asking members of an organization (a NON-PROFIT national honor society), questions to find out who they are and what they want out of the organization. They have paid to belong to the organization and have given explicit permission for the organization to send them emails. This is a survey their organization is conducting so they can serve them better. Once you are a member of this organization, all benefits are included, so there isn’t really an opportunity to sell them anything else based on the results of this survey. There is a link to opt-out of further messages regarding the survey, which will be honored. I have already received messages from people on the list who have accidentally opt-out and have asked to be opted back in. I should probably clarify something: I am not aware of anyone reporting my emails for this project as SPAM. A very small percentage (less than 1% so far) have opted out of further emails, which will of course be honored. However, I am concerned that some of Yahoo’s automatic SPAM filtering may be triggered by any mass email whose IP address isn’t registered. I also am concerned about the quality of emails in my client’s database. I think there are probably a lot of typos and I am concerned that this might also trigger a SPAM filter for emails from my IP. Is there a way to be whitelisted for Yahoo ro hotmail?

What should I charge for my professional photography services? I've been a professional portrait (and published) master-level photographer for 15 years. I used to own a very successful independent company and worked in the high (field) ranks for two large national photography companies for 6 years. However, due to a life change, I recently went back to school to pursue my dream, and in the process, I acquired a (non-photography based job) which lead to an independent (contractor) ongoing contract with the company I was working for (but in a completely different aspect than my social-work and educational based job). They (new company) want me to do all of their staff photos, including editing and copyright releases, as well as producing product/advertising shots for their websites and print work (with releases) and some other here and there items. Because I (began) work for them in a completely different aspect I'm totally befuddled what to charge them. I know what I would charge a client that called me off the street for these services, but they are offering me a contract of at least a year, the ability to sell my services (separately) as an additional service to our clients and will give me full credentials on all of their uses. The last thing I want to do is upset them with prices they are not used to (it's a new business who has never used professional photographic services and was planning on using stock photography from online). I am extremely lucky to have gotten this position with this company and can't risk it by my contractual pricing/plans for my separate work turning them off. Normally, I charge the following: Single business shot used for advertising or corporate occasions: (6-10 taken, 1 chosen by client) with very basic touch-ups, 1-8x10 or 11x14 print and a single digital "negative" of their chosen image (while I still hold original rights and uses). For this I charge $150.00-$200 per person, per image depending on the circumstances. It uses no more than 30 minutes total time per session and 30 minutes editing and ordering their prints. I charge for additional images or significant editing at an additional charge. Company business shots (5-15 employees individually only, with same amenities/qualifications as listed above for each individual employee). I charge between $120-$150 per person, per image depending on amount and time involved. Again, I offer additional images or editing at an additional retail charges. Third- They have requested product/commercial shots for use in both print and online advertising of products or items for sale by the company: This is a small company (less than 10 employees, and would require less than 12 separate product/commercial set ups). I account for 20 minutes and 7-9 images (with varying artistic lighting or backgrounds) per product. On these images I do absolutely bare minimum editing. I provide no prints unless requested, but I do provide full size, raw images in color, black and white and sepia (of 3 separate images per product) for use in any/all marketing purposes with copyright release (but while I still hold original rights and uses contracts for my own use): Normally, with 10 or more items I charge $100.00 per base image chosen/purchased or $150.00 per base image chosen when 2-6 images (total) are purchased.Other national companies have dropped their jaw at this pricing. But now I do this for fun, not as my primary financial resource, and I am doing it as a favor to my boss. I will also be providing optional additional services to our clients as an "extra" service. I would charge them my standard retail pricing (where prices are just for time/labor and minimal editing. All prints, negatives, etc are an additional cost per client). <-- What would be the appropriate "cut" the company should receive on my (only) sitting fees (as I consider prints/negs/editing to be talent based on my skills, not their referrals). The base sitting fees range from $75-$300, with a $125pp sitting fee average per client before any of my private commission products. They are giving me complete rights to all images I shoot for them and for their clients (yes, we have contracts and model releases). Am I ridiculously low/off for these prices? Or am I high? Retail studios in my area charge $110.00 per person for a 10 minute sitting consisting of 6 head and shoulders images taken, no editing, 1 choice of image in a medium res jpg file and immediate purchase and decision is required with them. Any ideas what I should charge for these services for the company directly? And what about the percentage to them (company) for my "referral fee" (which could be on up to 100 clients per year, easily) for each outside sitting. THANKS Fellow Photogs, You rock!!! Edit notes: I will be setting up a full studio in an office space inside the building. In addition to that, since I last worked on-site in a manner like this it has been over a year (school was insane last year), and during that time my entire traveling studio kit was stolen from me by someone I was mentoring (so I must buy a new one/set). I still have the camera of course. Secondly, just FYI, I will not be getting paid my regular pay rate during the time I am there for photo shoots due to the fact that my "other" (primary) job, in which I perform within a medical and patient counseling education. I can't really combine the two. Any other ideas? P.S. --- "Screwdriver": Thank you greatly for your competent and intellectual thoughts, I appreciate it a great deal!!

I need your opinion, please? HI! I'm writing a cover letter to apply for a master's program. Can you check it, please? Here we go: Dear Committee Members, I am hereby applying for entrance to the ‘XXX’ program at XXX of XXX, starting March 2011. I am a student of communication who dreams of working in advertising for the luxury industry. I have always been interested in this field ever since I used to attend high school and then during my undergraduate days. Actually, this passion led me to enroll at the bachelor degree in ‘XXX’ at XXX, where I graduated in March 2010. During my studies, I was given plenty of communication skills knowledge, including Linguitics, Literature, History of Cinema and Television, New Media and Mass Communication. While offering both depth and breadth across this field, these courses put into perspective the importance and relevance of Communication as a way to strenghten people’s interest to the companies and their products, hence the success of the companies themselves. I believe my penchant for this field stems from the fact that the importance of communication is increasing day by day all over the world. Indeed, the desire to delve deeper into this subject persuaded me to apply for an internship in Marketing soon after graduating from high school. It was my first work experience, which allowed me to take the first step in my journey to the world of communication. This journey continued with my experience as a volunteer copy editor of the monthly magazine ‘Universo’, within a small editorial staff. Not only I had to decide what to write, but also to find the best way to do it, since I used to manage the printing and delivery of the copies. Finally, on May 2010 I got an internship in Internal Communication at XXX, during which I was able to observe closely how the communication process is linked to people’s advocacy, helping to enhance the level of employee engagement. Being into a big company, I could develop many skills as for interpersonal relationships, problem solving and result accomplishment. From my earliest exposure to the field of Communication, I am confident to say that my educational background has instilled in me the qualities required to further develop good communication and organizational skills. For my future career, I believe the information and education that the XXX Program’s Degree will offer me will further develop all of the skills, qualifications, and understanding of what is required to become an excellent and highly specialised professional able to fine-tune companies marketing, communication, branding and retailing activities. I am thoroughly confident that no other group of professors could provide me with the best skills and experience available, to facilitate my dream of broadening my communication and management skills within the luxury industry. I hope you will give me the privilege of continuing my studies at your fine institution. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. My resume is enclosed. I am looking for getting feedback from you. Yours faithfully, XXX Thanks Patrick! You provided me with the best check I could wish for.

How to promote training courses on survival in the Amazon, a river cruiser and a travel agency in Internet? I need to promote four (4) specialized products and I require advice from people with experience in online marketing and those people that are responsible for the area of promotion, marketing or sales of travel agencies and tourism companies that offer survival courses and cruises. This company is located in Iquitos, an exotic city in the middle of the Peruvian Amazon, one of the least explored and most bio-diverse area in the world. The products I have to help to promote are: 1. Training courses on survival in the Amazon jungle, for companies or adventure travelers. 2. Visits to remote indigenous communities that preserve their customs, for anyone interested. 3. Research or study trips in the Peruvian Amazon, for researchers, students and anyone interested. 4. Travel by river cruises along the Amazon river and tributaries or cruises in Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve (the largest reserve in the floodable Amazon jungle in South America). These are quality products. The company respect and teach the travelers to respect the nature. They take medical help or supplies to river communities and indigenous tribes they visit. Trips are designed to understand the nature and their ecosystems. This company works with professional and specialized staff as naturalists and, in case of survival training courses, with instructors of the Air Force. The company weakness is the international promotion and that is my challenge. I have had successful experiences in promoting hotels. But I never promoted this type of product. Therefore, I have several questions: A. Where or in what ways should I promote these four products? B. What websites, especially free of charge, you known to promote these products? In hotels, for example, there are sites like Tripadvisor and others. C. Do you know websites and forums that are focused on "selling" the four travel products I have? D. What social networks focused on these products are available? I know that there are Facebook, Twiter, Flirck, but, do you know any social network for adventure travelers or interested in this kind of trips? E. I was considering using the Lonely Planet, Viajeros and Losviajeros forums. Do you know others forums or specialized forums? Regardless of language. F. Does anyone could help me with the contact details of publishers of travel guides (Lonely, Frommers, Footprints, etc.)? G. I was thinking in contact with TV and film producers or film makers to promote the services of the company and be a strategic partners for films in the Amazon. Where and how I may contact with big producers companies as Discovery, NatGeo, BBC, etc., and with small producers? Do you have any other recommendation?

3 Marketing Questions Multiple Choice? 1) If I order a new laptop, the company will charge me $1,399 for a machine in black, but only $1,249 for an identically configured one in white. Customers might not like to pay higher prices but what is the BEST answer to explain how the above pricing scheme lowers prices for everyone? a. The coloured units may have been in a product segment that was completely different from the plain (white) unit. The unit would capture additional sales and profits for the company allowing them to achieve economies of scale. b. It could not happen except in a deflationary economy. In a deflationary economy the pricing would be going down and this would increase the overall sales of products simply because consumers desire lower prices. c. Demand is related to the perceived value/utility (colour choice, etc) of the product. Optimized pricing means higher profits (perhaps for the coloured units) and volumes which in turn brings economies of scale. Extra profits on the coloured units can be used to develop functionality that helps all of their computer buyers. d. This might allow them to capture additional margin from the colour unit and use it to lower the pricing on the white units, which raises overall volumes and thus creates lower prices through economies of scope. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2) Mr. Mac, Warranty Director for a major power tool manufacturer, wants to develop a cross product three year warranty that helps redefine the brand as the best home (not professional) set of power tools on the market. He does not want the warranty to make promises that hurt the company financially. Which of the following sets of suggestions is most advisable? a. Set up a warranty that protects the company ensuring that abuse of the product is not covered by the three year warranty, set up a positive warranty that increases the quality perception of the brand, set up the complaints department. b. Make sure the quality is strong, find out a defection rate or breakdown rate during the first two years, find out what percent of typical users exercise warranty options, set up a positive warranty that increases the quality perception of the brand, set up the complaints department to handle warranty claims in the customer’s best interest c. Kyle Brofmann, CM’s Marketing Manager, has the following ideas. “C’mon you guys,” he says. “Let’s”: 1. Create a line of weight lifting training machines (like Nautilus machines) 2. Create a line of diet soft drinks 3. Create a line of weight loss milk shakes 4. Create a male doll for kids called “Cartman, super weight lifter” 5. Advertise the diet milk shakes at health food stores with a point of purchase display 6. Go head to head with the market leading diet milkshake powder “Count Flaballoff” (Count Flaballoff has a market share of 95%) ______________________ Critically analyze the ideas above and identify the best assessment of them below. a. #1 is a solid idea because of the similarity to the existing core products, #2 is questionable because of the lack of similar usage situation and questionable relevance to the core product. # 4 would work because of the strong consumer market connection between the core product and itself. b. #1 is a solid idea because of its similarity to the existing core products., #2 is questionable because of the lack of similar usage situation and questionable relevance to the core product. # 4 is too much of a stretch and #6 means unnecessarily going head to head against an existing product with a substantial market share. c. #5 is a great idea that depends on the obvious potential success of #3, #4 is absurd, and #2 is a clear line extension from the core product. # 1 is a solid idea because of the similarity to the existing core products . d. #1 is a solid idea, # 6 suffers because it represents a product divers

Young Professional, Recently Laid off, What Direction to Take? I was laid off in mid November (the best time of year to have to look for a job) and I'm having a difficult time deciding which route I should take. I'm a young professional with about 4+ years of internet marketing industry experience, in a city where there aren't a ton of jobs even really related to that. I'm working on my MBA in the evenings, a decision because of stagnation concerns with the company, so between the money I have from that, the severance I got, and savings, I'm financially secure almost through to the summer, but I'm not comfortable with that. Every position I see posted online seems to want 5-7 years of experience, in ANY field, which I don't have. I've applied to numerous, and got one interview, which didn't result in an offer. I want to work full time again. But in light of my layoff, I upped the amount of classes I'm taking from 2 to 3 nights a week, just because .. At four courses completed (3 more pending) with a 3.5 GPA, I consider myself too far into my program to just stop and relocate. I want to finish my MBA, maybe I'm wrong. What should I do as far as my job search is concerned? Am I too far along in my career to change career fields? I don't particularly care to, but if the demand for jobs in my area is different, I'm not sure. Then there's the whole matter of having to start from the bottom again if I do that. I made a decent salary this year; are employers in other disciplines likely to acknowledge that and pay me a similar salary if I go that route?

What can you expect to earn as a Sales/Lettings negotiator in this market? I got offered a job as a sales/lettings negotiator at the company YOUR MOVE. Im based in southeast area - eltham area. Is that any good?
A company is asking for salary history but I'm currently underpaid at current job? There's an opening at a company in my field (graphic design). However, they are asking for a salary history and "resumes without salary history will not be considered". I have been at my current job for 2 1/2 years and started in a junior level position, took the position to gain experience after getting my bachelor's degree in art/design, and build my portfolio which I have done. I now have 3-4 years of professional full-time experience and should be considered mid-level but my current company is too cheap to give me a big jump in salary for mid-level. I also have another additional bachelor's degree (multimedia), but those skills are not being used in my current company even though I've offered it to my managers so I can be more valuable and grow. With my 2 degrees, my skills and experience (based on market rate) I can make at least $10k more. Should I lie about my current salary on my salary history to get this big jump, and can they verify it? I don't want to be lowballed again. I'm in the U.S. (specifically in Los Angeles, California). At the job I'm at, there's additional perks, like having company Christmas shutdown in addition to our standard 2 weeks vacation like most companies so we get 3-4 weeks of paid vacation time which adds to my total compensation at my current job. So far, great answers from everyone- I'll take all the advice I got. Thanks!

What’s your opinion? Any thing wrong in this? I got an offer from an advertising company for as a model. Company looks professional, before signing the contract I wish to clarify couple of things. They told me initially that they make short videos for marketing/ adverts etc.. It is actually for some web sites – sell videos/ pictures of girls in plaster cast ! Shown some videos done by other models – all with plastered arm/ leg etc.. I have to wear casts for couple of weeks continuously.. Looks bit fetish but they offer very good finance and stuff. What’s your opinion? Any thing wrong in doing this? I haven’t heard any of these before.. any problem in putting my arm/leg in plaster with out a broken born? Confused now.
Self employed or employed? Hi, maybe someone can help me here. I have been working from home for over a year now for the same marketing company. The whole team (nearly 60 people ) are classed as self-employed. I think this also applies to the project-managers and supervisors. When I first rang up HMRC I told them what I was doing and I pay my tax and NI Contributions myself. I asked them if it was ok to be self-employed. And they said "yeah as long as you pay your taxes" (but this was just a general HMRC employee, not specialized in bogus self employment or anything)... My husband also works for the same company. I went through the HMRC questionnaire (I'm not allowed to post the link as a newbie) and it also agreed that I am self-employed. However, the status of being self-employed is not always as clear as that and there are a few issues with this company which make me think it would be fairer to employ the team. I guess my manager (the owner of the company) has solicitors who I think re-assured her that this is ok but I would like some feedback anyway. Ok, so we work from home which means we provide the tools for the job (eg computer, internet, headset, office) - this is a telemarketing position. However, there is not really a financial risk other than the fact that we won't get paid for work that's not done (on occasion we don't have any projects- so even if we submitted our availability we won't get work). We can submit our availability on a weekly basis (I do it monthly) and have free choice when it comes to the days we work. My husband and I both work part-time - I also do some bits and pieces for another company so in our case we can make sure that we work for someone else as well. But this marketing company is still our main income source. As the company pays so well it would be stupid to work for anyone else. As we do voluntary work we can't work any more for anyone else. And if we chose to work full-time we would probably work full-time for this marketing company as nobody else pays so well. In fact, there are lots of people on the team that work full-time (especially all the other managers) and they are still classed as self-employed. I can stop working for them whenever I want and they can sack me whenever they want, so far so good. BUT: If we submit our availability we can't pull out short noticed (the consequences go from "grumpy manager" to "total dismissal" (mainly because the client of the marketing company goes gaga if we don't fulfill our commitment)) The way we are being treated is probably worse than that of normal employees (probably because they can get away with it). We are being threatened to lose our jobs if we do even minor admin mistakes and the way we are being talked to sometimes is far from professional. I know, I know - one might say they can chose who they work with and we can chose not to work with them. But the nature of the job (well paid, you have to be somewhat committed) makes it hard to be flexible and do other jobs on a freelance basis. Especially if you chose to work full-time for them. There is a written agreement but it only says we are not allowed to work for a competitor in the same section. Is that legal? (I don't have any offers but I thought being self-employed means, I can work for whoever!?!). I also can't send someone else to do my job (maybe I could but if they screw up I will have a problem - also, they need to be trained and have a trial day and have to be approved by my manager, as she needs to see how they perform). We also get paid for the phone calls we make (for the expenses). For 1.5 years this job was really good as it provided a regular income. Lately they just stopped giving my husband work for no apparent reason (we presume this was because he tried to address a few issues regarding unfair treatment and they didn't like him saying it). When they submit their availability (they have to do it on MONDAY before the following week) he will only be told on Friday or Saturday whether he will have work the week after and if not, tough luck. But he is supposed to stick to his commitment otherwise he will threaten the possibility to get any more work. That doesn't leave much flexibility to find any other work so short noticed. They haven't given him any work for 4 weeks now (he always had work for the last 12 month) and didn't even tell him that this is going to continue for several weeks (he could have gone to the jobcenter in the meantime). Most of the people on this team don't have any other work - it is not like being a plumber where you can find work like that all the time. Most telemarketers work in call centers and are employed. So you can't really advertise your services to people as you could do with cleaning, valeting or anything else. We are paid by the day and not on commission by the way. We both consider to get different jobs anyway (by the way, I don't have any issues at the moment to get jobs with this company but I want to stop working for them anyway). But it would be interesting to know what your thoughts on this are!? Some of the people who work for us are actually abroad, so they have no other choice than being self-employed. Everybody's situation on the team is different but I think some people really should be employed. What is the legality of all this?
Which company to choose to do summer internship in China? My Friend was in Beijing, China last summer. He was doing a paid internship with the company named Get in2 China - Internship program provider in Beijing. He share with me his great experience in China. After the internship he got a proposal for a full time position in the same company. He recommend me to do the same. Also I was really surprised about his Chinese Level. Only in 3 month time he managed to understand locals and even can support a basic conversation. I was shocked! So I did some research and found out, that Get in2 China really have lots of Internship offers in a top firms in the areas like Marketing, Sales, IT, Law, Human Resources, PR, Fashion, Finance etc. Company seems to be very professional, reply to the inquiries very fast and also have 24/7 Live support. My friend told me that the advantage of that company in front of others is that all Internships are Paid Internships and the location of the Chinese Language school, Get in2 China office is very good, right in the city center. Also the quality of the accommodations are really impressive. He was living in DongZhiMen area 2 min from the Subway! And the price for the program was really affordable. My question is: I have found another good website: http://www.internshipinchina.asia Does anyone have experience doing an internship with this Company? I think I will follow the advice of my friend but just want to check more options around. So if someone can give me some ideas on coming to China that will be very nice. Thanks!
How many investors on this site think that Yahoo will be overtaken by another company? its only a question of time before the actual investors get tired of the bullcrap the leadership at yahoo keeps feeding them about turning the company around and getting a bigger market share and it goes on and on and on. I think this will happen in two stages: 1. The value of the stock will decrease to $8.25 per share and 2. yahoo shareholders will be offered a deal they can't refuse and yahoo will be taken over and run correctly by professional business personnel instead of wannabe's. what do you think? professional turnaround groups that see a potential in yahoo and can get the stock to rise to $25. to $31.50 per share, thats who would be interested in buying this company. Sop far, the leadership at yahoo has been terrible, as well as some of the employees criminal behavior, which tends to go hand in hand, but this will all change when yahoo is taken over and run professionally by professionals.
•Identify the corporation's strengths and weaknesses. As well as core competentcies? A corporation that markets power tools has just hired you for the newly created position of Director of Strategic Planning and Analysis. The company offers a full range of power tools of professional and consumer quality and serves both consumer and industrial channels. With the exception of circular saws, the corporation's market share is no greater than 3% in any of its product lines. The market share of circular saws is a dominant 40%, with very strong brand equity and loyalty among both professionals and consumers. The quality of the tools, except for circular saws, is considered low to moderate among end-users. It is now the general consensus of the corporation's senior management team that in order for the corporation to survive, they must do whatever they can to capture greater share in the two growing segments of the power tools market, consumer channels and cordless products. The corporation has had some success in the cordless business segment, and has gained a reputation as a cordless innovator with a couple of its products. Any beachheads that have been established, however, have evaporated as competitors have essentially copied the product and used their superior marketing power to displace the corporation at the retailers. The corporation has moved on to introduce the next innovative product. This strategy of first in, abandon, and move on has been highly debated within the senior management team, with a desire of some to transfer resources from research and development to the marketing and sales departments. The corporation has little information on its market share, the size of market, the dynamics that drive the market, or its relative product cost positions. No competitive analysis has been performed in years. The internal information that is available to run the business is inconsistent from one functional department to another. The monthly meetings of the senior management team have been reduced to arguments over the attainment of company metrics, with each department pointing to its own set of reports to support its positions. The friction among the senior management team is having its effect on the rest of the employees of the corporation. Many of the employees fear losing their jobs due to the acquisition. As a result of years of declining sales and layoffs, a culture of pessimism and failure exists. The new owners fear that many employees in key positions will leave the company taking away their industry expertise. The corporation's power tools consist of such products as circular saws, drills, routers, reciprocating saws, planes, and hammer drills. Approximately 80% of all power tools sold are corded, while the remaining 20% are cordless. All things being equal, a cordless tool is comparable in price to a similarly featured corded tool. The cordless segment is by far the faster growing of the two at a compound annual rate of 10% versus 3% for corded. The power tools market in which the corporation operates is divided into professional and consumer products, consumer and industrial channels, and consumer and professional end users. A professional tool is defined by high reliability, high durability, and enhanced features. They are built to withstand the rigors of daily use by such tradesmen as carpenters, electricians, woodworkers, and plumbers in the performance of their jobs. Professional tools cost more to manufacture, but are sold at high enough prices to realize higher margins than comparable consumer tools. A consumer tool is defined as lower reliability, lower durability and less features, and is primarily used by do-it-yourself individuals for occasional jobs around the home. Got a job offer now, but am still interviewing with my TOP choice which could take weeks! K, so I know a lot of people ask this here, but my situation is slightly different: I am being let go at my current job due to “business restructuring” so I’ve been exploring options in the market as expeditiously as possible and now, got myself in a "tizzy": I have been talking to JOB A - my top choice - for a few weeks now about an opportunity with them and they have expressed real interest in me and love my background. They like it so much that they are basically looking to create a senior-level position for me in their company. Because, it was not an open position originally, however, the process has been slow with getting everything approved with their top partners and setting up interviews and meetings with everyone as the company is not in my state, so it requires setting up travel to do this interviews and, therefore, makes the process more cumbersome (just to be clear, I have NO problem moving, in fact, it’s part of he reason why I AM so interested in this job). Here’s the catch with them – everything up until this point as just been verbal. As of today, I know it will take AT least another 2 - 3 weeks before any written (and therefore, legal) documentation solidifying the deal are made. Then , there’s JOB B I interviewed for JOB B - my back up – about two days ago in which I had NO intention of ever taking them over JOB A. They are, however, a VERY GOOD, WELL KNOWN company and are offering a more entry level position with a program that could advanced me to management in two years. It's not a "perfect fit" in terms of where I’d like to take my career, per se, as much as JOB A (hence, why it’s my back up) but they seem cool and the interview went well. And here’s the thing: they told me they were not looking for anyone to start until mid-September, early October, which was perfect for me in terms of timing..so Great, right?... Well, I dunno what the hell they were talking about b/c now--only two days later--I've been offered the job. It's totally overwhelming! Great, but confusing… I wasn’t expecting this fast turnaround… Now, I ALREADY know to I need to call / contact JOB A and mention - professionally - that another job has been offered to see if the process can be sped up. Yes, and this I already did. Here’s the problem with that: #1) The hiring manager is currently out of town on vacation and -- NO - there is no one else I can contact, b/c he's the one really headed up the job and process. He won’t be back till next week so I don’t know his thoughts on this… #2) Even when I hear back from him, I KNOW I won't be able to speed up the process any more than maybe 2 weeks…. The company is out of state, so things take longer in terms of setting up a date to meet (got to fly me out), plus they want me to sit and "visit' with one of their offices and get a real "feel" for them ( which I love the idea of, b/c I really want to do that b/c signing anything as well!) but a lot of their people are travelling so it will take some time to get this lined up where I can visit with everyone. So overall, I’m truly excited about JOB A , form what I know today, and with them physically adding a job for me b/c they are so impressed with my background, I feel stupid to walk away from it without giving a REAL chance (how often do companies do that for young professionals?), However, it still all just verbal conversations at this point, anything can happen... On the other hand, JOB B is not my top choice, but is a good, solid opportunity. Having said that, if I went with them over JOB A, I know would never be able to live that down... Still, I know JOB B will NOT wait 3 weeks for me to give them a decision. Also I really don’t want to lie because: 1) I've heard that if would be REALLY bad/unethical for me to accept the job knowing that I may leave in just a few days after taking it. I've heard this can be bad for your future career as it creates bad blood and is just plain shady. 2) If I take JOB B, I would woulld need a few days off over the next few weeks to travel (at least 3) and complete my interview process with JOB A… I mean, a person can only say they are sick so many times in their first few weeks before an employer catches on… With all that laid out… HELP!! I don’t’ want to end up unemployed but I’d like to also avoid burning bridges!

If you know about the stock market..and how it works. please help. ? I have been trying to do this workssheet but i do not understand this at all. please help. Directions: To understand the role of the market professionals and how a stock is traded at the NYSE, place the following steps in chronological order from the time Amanda Smith, the investor, decides to buy 100 shares of Great Computer stock to the time the order is executed. -The stockbroker gives Amanda the current market price of Great Computer Company and she instructs the stockbroker to buy 100 shares. -Amanda Smith of Hartford, CT, desides to buy Great Computer Company stock. She calls a local stockbroker who works for a firm that is a member of the NYSE. -The broker sends the order to the Trading Floor of the NYSE electronically via the SuperDOT System to the specialist's workstation or through Broker Booth Support System (BBSS) to the broker's handheld computer. -After the transaction is executed, the specialist's workstation sends notice to Amanda's firm (the buyer) and to the seller's firm, as well as to the consolidated tape so that a written record is made. -At the trading post, the specialist that handles Great Computer Company Stock makes sure the transaction is executed in a fair and orderly manner. Amanda's order competes with other orders in the Great Computer Company at the point of sale for the best price. -The transaction is processed electronically. Amanda recieves a trade confirmation from her broker's firm describing the trade, and the exact amount she owes for the 100 shares of Great Computer Company plus any applicable commissions. -The tranaction is reported by computer and appears within seconds on the consolidated tape displays across the county and around the world. -Amanda asks her stockbroker the current price for Great Computer Company stock. The broker checks the quote (the highest bid to buy, the lowest offer to sell) for Great Computer Company stock using an electronic market data system. Im sorry i know that this is alot but all i need is them in order. I really had no idea how to do this. If you know anything about this, please help thank you so much.
Any suggestions to my article - Im an internet market professional. First article on a tutoring website!? The genuine online homework help industry. Online homework help industry is plagued by much the same factors as most other online mainstream online industries. But worse – because the online academic industry does not seem to require any benchmarks or yardstick for quality purposes, and any creature, dim or not, that recalls what he read last in grade 7th with a fair bit of chutzpah in soul – lands online upon a tutoring website – to TEACH! But quality resources do exist – for someone willing to seek them, and dedicating enough time to finding what a blog or website really is about. A new quirky website recently caught my eye: http://oxenmine.com offering homework help. Just about nothing upon this website seemed ordinary to me. So I applied my seven quality check to it, to really understand how they worked and form an idea of them. 1.Attitude: The attitude in the written matter is everything. It tells you if there is an owner actively, constantly gardening or if the website is a link farm or even a scam site with third grade content. From the moment I read their header slogan, I started to look into the soul of the website – it was well thought out. So was the matter – relevant, written by someone who knew what they were writing or selling. 2.Theme: There was a theme to the website. That indicates a strong will to charge ahead, and make a niche for one self’s in the vast pool of third grade websites. You need it too, if you want to stand out. I don’t think Im forgetting the home page of http://oxenmine.com. 3.Technology – Opposed to the millions of static html websites you will find on oxenMINE usage of dynamic content, most up to date gadgets and widgets. Its primarily set out to be a blog – and makes for a good one. 4.Links – yeah, the part most good websites falter. A website like a man is known by the company he keeps – there are links to some very nice websites from the homepage itself! There’s a wonderul citation source and links to a great mathematical tool – they even load a calculator for you! 5.SERVICE: Where there is humor there is confidence and I was already sold out. Now this one bowled me over. The light humored ambience percolates to the conversation they engage you in even via email. The service was punctual – though I thought it was a tad pricy, but for what you are getting I think its fair deal. 6.Original Content: What you probably realized is oxenMINE do not keep databases like other big companies do. They make sure what you get from them is new, fresh and relevant to the 21st century – not some repeatedly sold junk. 7.AWESOME customer service: This one sure will keep bringing me back. I urge anyone who requires customized homework solutions to check out this fantastic website, http://oxenMINE.com They even offer a forum for free homework help here – http://oxenmine.com/freemilk/
Do websites like Career Builder, Monster, or Yahoo HotJobs actually find you a "real" professional job? I just graduated from college with a B.B.A. in General Business and I'm looking to find a "real" professional job. I know it's gonna be tough with the bad job market right now, but I was told that websites like Yahoo Hot Jobs, Career Builder, and Monster really are not that great to find a professional job. Is this true? I was told that from these kind of websites, you'll get phone calls from companies that'll offer you sales jobs with a high turnover rate or from lame temp agencies that'll find you jobs making $13 or $14 an hour. the reason why I posted this question in R&S is because I got no replies from the career section. So I thought maybe some religious people can help me out here, lol.

Professional Real Estate and Tax Question? I'm looking for information from a TRUE Real Estate and Tax Professional! There is a house I am interested in. Its 1- not on the market 2- is 100% mortgage free (has been since it was new) 3- owes several years in back taxes, 1 year currently owned by a 3rd party tax lien company 4- it needs a lot of work This property is neglected, the current owner, is unemployed and has several underlying alcohol and drug issues. So far I have 3 options 1- wait until it forecloses, the 3rd party lien company is not foreclosing on it currently. So it could take up to 3 years. And catch it when it goes to public auction. 2- take assignment on the current lien owned by the 3rd party company, and force it in foreclosure. Only issue, is that I'm not 100% sure how this process works or how long it will take, and if I can assume ownership of the house once its foreclosed? 3- I can put an offer bid to the current owner, minus what she owes in back taxes. And deal with the 3rd party tax lien holder, and the county after. Please clarify - 3 consecutive years? So if I take assignment of 2007, buy the taxes for 2008 and 2009 from the county. I can apply to take ownership of the property?
How to establish credibility when I previously took a 1 year career break? Hi I am a 34 year old professional female who decided to take a career break a year ago after having worked all my life. Last year I got married and (me and my hubby) decided that I should stay home with my 8 yr old daughter (from a previous marriage) and to give a shot at being a "homemaker". Being a homemaker has definitely made my relationship with my daughter a stronger one but I do miss working full time and putting my self to work. I have been for the past few week job hunting and I am under the impression that having taken this career break (which reflects on my Resume) has definitely close the doors to many opportunities out there. I have sent out Resumes and have answered mady Ads with no results. I even went to a Head-Hunting Company and got an interview with a famous Insurance Co. They offered me the job for much less than what we had previously discussed! My recruiter had the nerve to tell me to take it since I have been "off the market" for a while!!!!! Help!!!!
I need some serious professional advice in my studio photography career? Since my beautiful baby girl has been born, I haven't found a job that can actually support me working AND paying for a babysitter. I've had several years of studio photography experience, and that is primarily what I've done for the last several years. I have a few Paul C. Buff Alien Bees lights that do the trick for most lighting situations, although... I wish I could afford better equipment. My husband got out of the military last July, and since then, I've done a few freelance photography jobs on my own. Mainly family and maternity/newborn studio. My main problem is that I'm not a salesperson, and that I SUCK at marketing myself. We moved to a new state. I had 5 or so family shoots around Christmas time that made some money, but since then have been unable to pick up shoots off of craigslist alone. I had a job offer the other day to be an apprentice to a studio that is in a (somewhat) nearby mall. I know that I can take better photos than those that are on this private mall studios website. Should I go with it, in the interest of keeping in practice, or do you think that I MIGHT have what it takes to make it on my own? Here is my website: http://www.yourportraitsbydesign.com/ I SUCK as a salesperson. When I shoot on my own, I generally sell the whole session on disc for $100. I really thought I'd get better responses, but then... I just post on craistlist and don't really know anyone around here in order to spread by word of mouth. In your opinion, am I better off bettering my marketing/salesmanship skills and shooting on my own, or should I join as an apprentice to an already established studio? FTR... I just had a beautiful baby girl. I'd like to be at home with her as much as possible. If you think I could find a 40 hour per week job that could pay for her care AND make some extra money, I'd do it. In fact, I have an interview soon with a company that has a place in a mall. I know that my photography is better than the photos that they showcase on their walls, so I'm slightly hesitant to even go to the interview. What do you think? Should I stick it out on my own? Advertise more, in different places other than just craigslist?! Or just give it up and go to the interview? Thanks :-)
If I orally accepted a contingent job offer, can I later decline? i've just completed a professional designation and been in the market for a new job. company A just offered me a position contingent on references and background checks. they asked me to respond same day so they wouldn't miss out on other candiates. i have interviews with another (company B) the next day, but it wasn't going to happen soon enough so i gave a go-ahead with the offer n consent to the checks. but later the recruiter for company B said it's ok for me to continue my interviews b/c i didn't sign anything and their offer is not final. the potential position with B is only marginally better but it's very close to my home (around the corner). i guess i'm going to the interviews (company B seems very interested after the first round of interview), but still don't feel comfortable. yes i haven't signed anything and the offer is contingent, but it certainly doesn't look good if i bail out(esp in a professional community)- i did say yes on the phone...pls help me think it out!
How much would a telephone recruiter make? Read details...? I just got an interview for a job as a telephone recruiter. It's at a company close to DC that does market research. I would be doing phone calls to working professionals to recruit them for market research studies. How much should I expect to hear them offer for a salary?

they said hong kong people love to shop, what kind of impact do you think it has on the advertising industry? Why People Buy By: Thomas Young Why do people buy? The answer may seem like common sense, but it is not. Most sales people have no idea why their customers buy. They assume that customers buy for their reasons, when in fact the opposite is true, and here is the common sense part: customers buy for their own reasons. Many companies still attempt to make customers buy for their reasons. You must understand why your customers buy your product or service. Emotions First The root of any buying decision is based on an emotional response that is based on perceived value or filling a need. This generally has no basis in logic or reason. There may be a certain amount of rationalizing after the purchase, but the actual decision to buy is almost always emotional. Hot Buttons Hot buttons are the emotional needs that when pushed result in a sale. In fact, people resist buying when their hot buttons are not identified. Hot buttons are unique to each person and are perceived differently by each customer based on what will make them feel good or meet emotional needs. The master sales person will find out those real benefits and emotional needs and push the hot buttons that result in a sale. Choices Count People have many options. Many times, the only factor that differentiates a product or service is what best appeals to the buyer's emotions. It is important to understand these emotional hot buttons and use them to develop a competitive advantage. The most important part of marketing, and selling, is understanding why your target market makes the choices they make in purchasing your products or services. If this is not understood, then sales are probably going to competitors that do understand it. Buying Signals During the sales process a client will communicate buying signals. The sales professional realizes that every thing the customer does, or does not do, is a buying signal. Successful sales people can read and intuit these signals and use them as a profile of customer buying behavior. The Buying Team Successful sales people work well with multiple buyers and decision-makers by identifying roles, concerns and issues. What does each person bring to the sales transaction? What is their role in the buying process? What are their hot buttons? People will respond differently in a group and buying patterns will change. Ask Customers Why They Buy Engage customers in areas that bring to the surface the mechanics of their buying process. In this way, the sales process becomes much more effective and focused on the core needs of the client. Go and ask your customers, "why do you buy?" The customer or prospect is often thinking the following: Can I trust the sales person? I do not have time for this. I do not want to hurt the sales person's feelings. What are his or her motives and intentions? Is it safe to open up? Everything is OK the way it is now, why change? What will others think of this? There may be a problem, but what the sale person is offering is not the solution, I want to find my own solution. How can I postpone this? The sales person's solution is too risky. The benefits do not out-weigh the risks. There is no solution to this problem. I am not convinced I need to buy How can I buy?

Advertising Website business that takes goods or services for payment instead of cash.? Hi My boyfriend is exceptionally good at designing and building websites. He can create anything of any design or taste with special effects, videos etc etc on it. There are so many web design businesses out there that we decided to make ours with a difference - we will accept company stock or services from the business as payment for a top class website. This will appeal to people as they dont have to find a cash lay out to pay for a site which can run into the thousands for a really good professional site. Instead they use stock they already have or services they offer - i.e we do a holiday website we get free holiday / s that we can sell or keep at our discretion. This gives the smaller business's who cannot afford to pay for a website to still enjoy and benefit all that the world wide web can offer in extra marketing and sales. However i do not have a clue where to start to advertise. Can anyone advise any good sites? Thanks

Mobile Spa-ideas for growth in this bad economy? I own a mobile spa. I haven't made much profit since its start earlier this year. I know it takes a long time for a business to grow but, with the economy the way it is I was thinking of another way to go about it. Like perhaps marketing it as an event planning company and branching out a bit. I love what I do but let's face it, lack of profit is VERY discouraging even for something you love. Mobile spa prices are higher than day spas because we come to you and I just don't think people are trying to spend the extra money to have this luxury. What are some other ways I can try to make a decent profit in this down-trodden economy? Ways I can better advertise to potential clients about what I offer, which is professional spa services on-location.

digital camera for "outdoorsy" people? My HP digital camera recently died and I am in the market for a new camera. My boyfriend an I aren’t professional photographers so we don’t need something too nice, but we are looking for some specific things. We are very active and outdoorsy so we’re interested in a camera that can take video and won’t shatter like an eggshell when hiking. I’m also looking for something that has different functions depending on the environment. Our photos in the snow tend to look awful, and we had some problems with lighting on sand also. I’ve also heard that some companies offer underwater kits for their digital camera. I’ve done some checking online, and tried some in the stores, but photos in Wal-Mart and photos on top of a mountain or in dense underbrush are two totally different things. I hoped that experience from real people using cameras in the real world would be a little more useful. I appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

Salary negotiations? I'm applying for jobs right now, since I'm graduating soon. Many online applications ask how much I want to be paid. A friend of mine said that you should always put 5k over what you really want since most companies offer you less then what you ask for. Something about it doesn't sound right to me. Can someone give me an educated opinion on this issue? I'm not sure how much the field pays right now with recent market changes, but I have an idea of what i want to be paid I tried to research it and it sounds a little high but within the range of the professional. Should I still add something on top of that? How does it usually work with salary negotiation? Thank you for the responses

Does anyone know an Attorney that specializes in Credit? I have been working with a company for the past couple of months that has not been able to create a presence as a professional & credible company ( ie: still no website, unprofessional contracts and applications, etc) I love their service & they are reasonably priced, however, I am just running out of time. I have several big comanies that I have been holding off on. I would like to find another attorney that I can market for & count on. The service is Credit Restoration, usually done in less than 60 days. No dispute letters, just legal demands served to the Bureaus. The retainer is good for 36 mos., so if the client has a future issue within the 36 mos., the attorney will have the item removed at no extra fee. They also have other strictly for mort. lenders. If you are or know someone that is an attorney that offers the same services, have a professional presence, is in California and would like someone like myself to market, please contact me or just answer this question.
Calderon vows to restore Mexico's appeal but will it work ? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070306/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/mexico_curing_migration MEXICO CITY - Mexican President Felipe Calderon won't be fighting for migration reform when he meets with President Bush next week. Instead, he will be be spelling out what he intends to do to keep Mexicans at home. ADVERTISEMENT Calderon, who was inaugurated on Dec. 1, has pledged to take 100 actions in his first 100 days in office, many of which represent the first steps toward "curing" Mexico's long tradition of illegal migration to the U.S. If implemented, his proposals could help transform Mexico from a labor-exporting country with relatively low growth, productivity and wages into an investment-rich, job-producing economy with better living standards for its 107 million people, nearly half of whom still live in poverty. "We are laying the foundation for a more just, healthy society with better and more equal opportunities for all," he said. Even a modicum of success for Calderon would improve on the record of his predecessor Vicente Fox, who failed to persuade the United States to accept Mexican guest workers and also could not put in place proposed reforms. Like Fox, Calderon faces powerful Mexican monopolies and oligopolies, union leaders and old-school politicians who have resisted changes to a system that concentrates power and wealth in a small number of hands and blocks attempts to improve competition, lower consumer prices and open the job market to more people. Unlike Fox, Calderon has shown he can rally lawmakers and others behind his plans: Congress unanimously passed his 2007 federal budget and he has united state governments behind a nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking. Among other things, he has proposed labor, energy and judicial reforms to encourage investment, promote competition and create jobs; improved tax collection to generate more revenue to fight poverty and improve education; universal health care and support for small and medium-size businesses. "Curing" migration will take many more than his six years in office, Calderon says. With this in mind, he set the goal of boosting Mexico's per-capita income from the equivalent of about $8,000 today to around $30,000 by 2030. "It won't be easy. It won't be fast, but yes, it is possible," Calderon said. Calderon and Bush will meet in Merida, the capital of Yucatan state, on March 13 and 14. Officials have not disclosed in detail the talks' agenda, but in addition to migration, the two are expected to discuss drugs and unresolved trade disputes over trucking rights and agricultural products. U.S.-bound migrants include not only poor and poorly educated unskilled laborers, but also middle-class entrepreneurs, college graduates and professionals. Many actually have jobs in Mexico, but the salaries don't match their talents and experience, and workplace discrimination is widespread. "I think he's on the right track, but migration is a long-term problem," said Jorge Chabat, an international affairs expert at Mexico City's Center for Economic Research and Instruction. Jose Antonio Perez, a 27-year-old college graduate from the oil-rich Gulf coast state of Veracruz, has a degree in mechanical engineering, but no real career prospects in Mexico. His jobs have included a five-month, unpaid engineering internship at a boat-repair company; a two-year job with a telephone company that offered no benefits and no chance of advancement; and his current teaching job, which requires little of his engineering skills and offers no insurance benefits, vacation, or job security. Perez works 12 hours a day Monday through Friday teaching high school mathematics and computers — a post that pays $12,000 a year. He supplements his income with odd carpentry and bricklaying jobs, or selling clothing and even cars. "I sleep four hours a night," he said. "I can't even think of having a family until I get something more secure." More than a year ago, when several of Perez's friends were working illegally in the United States, they earned as much as $26,300 a year pumping gas or working in carpentry. The friends have since returned, but their stories have inspired Perez. If his situation doesn't improve in six months, he plans to cross the border as well. "I could be a carpenter or a locksmith," he said. Calderon — who often notes that he has relatives in the United States, although he has not revealed their legal status — says he is well aware of the difficulties Mexicans face trying to live and work in their own country. He recently told the American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico: "The ideal situation for Mexico is not to have Mexicans migrate." ____ On the Net: http://www.presidencia.gob.mx/en

Should we give money to poor ppl? ZAKAAT (Alms) Ramadan is the month of giving and benevolence, the Messenger was more benevolent than a falling rain. Muslims are encouraged to emulate the Messenger of Allah (saas), to assess and pay their Zakaat during the month of Ramadan, thus combining the two pillars of Islam at the same time. Zakaat (alms) is the name of what a believer returns out of his or her wealth to the neediest of Muslims for the sake of the Almighty Allah. It is called Zakaat because the word Zakaat is from Zakaa which means, to increase, purify and bless. Who Should Give Zakaat The obligation of Zakaat is mandatory on every Muslim who possesses the minimum Nisaab, whether the person is man, woman, young, old sane or insane. Because the proof of Zakaat in Al-Qur`an and Sunnah is general and does not exclude young or insane. Allah (SWT) stated that: "Of their goods take alms so that thou mightiest purify and sanctify them..." (Al-Qur`an, 9: 103) Imam Ibn Hazim said that every Muslim young or old sane or insane needs to cleanse his or her wealth with Zakaat because of generality of the evidence. Anas bin Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah (saas) said: "Trade with the money of the orphan, lest it is eaten up by Zakaat." (At-Tabraani) In another Hadith `Amru bin Shuaib related from his grandfather that the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever is entrusted with money of an orphan should trade with it and should not leave it sitting to be used up by charity." (Tirmidhi) The point of reference in these reports is that the Messenger (saas) urged the trustee on the estate of people who due to age or other reasons cannot manage their own financial affairs, to invest it in a business that will yield a return and make it grow until they are in a position to do so themselves. For, if proper investment is not made with an ophan's inheritance, it will be depleted by charity, thus leaving the orphan with little or nothing. The Nisaab The Lawgiver, Allah has prescribed the minimum amount that is obligatory for Zakaat in different ranges of properties, and that minimum amount is known as nisaab. The reason for nisaab is to ensure that no one is forced to give Zakaat out of what he or she does not have, and that no wealth goes without Zakaat. Nisaab is also an insurance against the tyranny of the state to tax the poor and or the neediest as is the case in many countries. Nisaab is a reference point for the average Muslim who is not sure whether he possesses the minimum wealth on which Zakaat is obligatory. The wealthy need not worry about the Nisaab. Zakaat is obligatory on their entire wealth and must be paid out at the end of financial year that they set for their Zakaat. The Nisaab will not be valid unless it fulfills two conditions: 1) The amount that has reached Nisaab must be the excess or surplus known as "faadil" from one's essential needs such as food, clothing, housing, vehicles, tools and machinery that is used in business. The essentials for living are exempted from Zakaat. Although what constitutes nisaab may change from one country to another, the amount that is needed for the basic needs of living in different countries is very similar, because the market place determines the prices, whether it is an official market or a non-official market. In the poorest countries people do without or live below the poverty standard, and that is why many go hungry or without basic essentials. However, we must realize that Zakaat is an act of worship (ebadah) like Salaat. The element of intention (niyyah) is necessary, and we should not overly rely on state agencies to determine for us the requirements of our religious duty. The so called the "consumption basket" (that is poverty level as determined the social security administration which are updated every fiscal year) may not be the same as what Islam considers minimum Nisaab. In the industrialized countries, the consumption basket may include items that are not necessarily essential, such as entertainment, extra clothing, variety of food, eating in restaurant or eating at home, owning more than one car as opposed to having three cars in the driveway, drinking water as opposed to juices, eating regular food or special "health" food. This is why I believe it is essential that we do not lose site of the fact that Zakaat is ebadah of wealth, like salaat and fasting. Non Muslims may consider all the things mentioned above as essentials while Muslims will not. Indeed, no Muslims in good standing will attempt to hide behind the label of consumption basket so as to evade Zakaat. Nisaab eliminates the possibility of injustice or unfair treatment of the Zakaat payer. To suggest that if we do not follow the rules of International Monetary Fund or the arbitrary figures of social security administration or department of agriculture we will be doing injustice to the Zakaat payer is ludicrous. 2) Nisaab must mature, that is the money is not liable for Zakaat unless it has remained a full year in the possession of a person. This is the understanding of the majority of the scholars. Imam Abu Hanifah (raa) said: "What should be considered is the existence of nisaab at the beginning and the end of the Zakaat year set by the payer". It does not matter if the nisaab money increases or decreases during the calendar year, as we will explain later. This condition does not include farm produce, for it is due on the day it is harvested. Allah (SWT) stated: "... But render the dues that are proper on the day that the harvest is gathered..." (Al-Qur`an, 6: 141) According to Imam Al-`Abadi, (raa) Zakaat money is of two kinds: one that by its nature can not be invested and Zakaat of this category is due on the day of harvest. This includes all the farm produce that is liable for Zakaat. The other is wealth that can be invested in the hope of a good return, like cash, gold or silver, because the opportunity is there that cash in one's hand can be invested for a good return. This includes currency investment, merchandise and livestock. Their Zakaat is not due until they have matured in one full year. The proof of this condition is the Hadith related by Ibn `Umar that the Messenger of Allah (saas) said: "He who acquires property is not liable for Zakaat on it till a year passes." According to Ibn Rushd (raa) this is the understanding of the majority of scholars, including the four rightly guided Khalifahs. Zakaat Of Salaries The condition of yearly term maturity applies to the commodities on which the Lawgiver said Zakaat is due, and this includes silver, gold, modern paper currency and livestock. Paper currency is analogous to silver, therefore, it takes the case of silver. There is no Zakaat on salary, earned income from wage earners or professionals or independent contractors until such money matures in a full year. There is no such thing as paying your Zakaat on the day you receive your paycheck. What the wage earner must know is that he or she can purify that money with charity (sadaqah) anytime they cash the paycheck. Allah (SWT) states: "And in their wealth and possessions (was remembered) the right of the needy, he who asks and he who (for some reason) was prevented (from asking)." (Al-Qur`an, 51: 19). We can deduce from the concept of "yearly maturity" of wealth on which Zakaat is due as encouraging, among other things, saving on the part of the Zakaat payer, and enhances the chances for eradicating poverty, because if the poor receives his rightful share of Zakaat there will be the possibility that he can take Zakaat money and invest it and become a Zakaat payer instead of recipient. This possibility will be lost if he receives few Zakaat dollars every month. To say that the wage earner just brings his check home and spends everything on necessities and lives from check to check with nothing left over means the person is eligible for Zakaat. Using farm produce as analogous to salary for Zakaat is wrong analogy. As Imam Al-`Abadi said, these are two different categories of money. $2, 500.00 cash can be invested by the person and expect a good return whereas it will be difficult to invest a bushel of corn. It can be traded as a commodity, which is what it is. This why we must know that analogy has rules that must be followed before it is applied. Certainly the jurists are unanimous that earned income, known as almal al-mustafadah, should either be added to existing money and wait until that amount reaches maturity and then give their Zakaat; or if there is no money on hand the time one possesses this money, he or she should wait one full year before assessing it for Zakaat. Zakaat is one of the five pillars of Islam and a vital element in the religion of Islam. It is the twin sister of Salaat. In Al-Qur`an, Allah (SWT) stated: "So establish regular Prayer and give regular Alms; and obey the Messenger; that you may receive mercy." (Al-Qur`an, 24: 56) Also, "...Establish regular Prayer and give regular Alms, and loan to Allah a beautiful loan...." (Al-Qur`an, 73: 20) "And they have been commanded no more than this: to worship Allah, offering Him sincere devotion, being true (in faith); to establish regular Prayer and to practice regular charity; and that is the religion right and straight." (Al-Qur`an, 98: 5) In a famous Hadith reported by `Umar Bin Khattab (raa), the Messenger of Allah (saas) responded to Jibreel (as) and said: "... Islam is to testify that there is no deity but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to perform the prayer, to pay Zakaat, to observe fasting in Ramadan, and to make pilgrimage to the house of Allah if you are able to do os...." (Bukhari, Muslim) There is consensus among Muslim scholars that it is mandatory on every believer who is financially able. Whoever knowingly denies this obligation, while he possesses the minimum amount, would be considered a disbeliever and a renegade from Islam. Whoever is stingy, or tries to cheat, is considered among the wrongdoers. Zakaat is mandatory on four categories of items. 1. Farm produce of seeds and fruits, such as wheat, barley, rice, dates, raisins, cocoa, pistachios, coffee, cashews. Allah (SWT) stated: "O you who believe, give of the good things which you have (honorably) earned, and of the fruits of the earth which We have produced for you..." (Al-Qur`an, 2: 267) Also: "... But render the dues that are proper on the day that the harvest is gathered..." (Al-Qur`an, 6: 141) Thus, these two verses and many others indicate that Zakaat is due on farm products that reached the minimum amount (nisaab). No farm product is liable for Zakaat unless it is a product that is considered as food and can be stocked or saved naturally without refrigeration. If the produce is perishable fruit, such as grapes, there is no Zakaat. But if one sells them they will pay their Zakaat on the profit earned when it matures. The nisaab is 612 kilos, which equals 1,346.40 lb. There is no Zakaat on produce that is less than this amount. If the farm produce or crops grow dependant on rainwater, or without any man's labor or irrigation, Zakaat due is one-tenth of the total. If it is grown by irrigation, then the Zakaat due is half of one-tenth of the total produce. There is no Zakaat on fruits like apples or oranges or vegetables which are perishable and need refrigeration for long storage, but they should be considered as any income if the profit earned from their sale reaches the amount of Zakaat, then Zakaat should be given. 2. Cattle, including camels, cows, sheep and goats, that are freely graze and are raised for trade and production. For Zakaat to be obligatory, the number must reach the nisaab. The nisaab of camels is five, of cows 30, of sheep and goats, 40. By freely grazing is meant the animal goes out to feed without the owner buying or bringing it feed or hay. If it is not a grazing animal, there is no Zakaat in the stock by itself. The stock will, however, be considered as articles of trade, then will be assessed for Zakaat as articles of trade when the profit earned from their sale reaches the amount by itself or in combination with other articles of the trade. 3. Merchandise and goods of trade and commerce. This includes anything that is obtained for the business of buying and selling: land, animals, food provisions, fabric, cars, spare parts, etc. This inventory is evaluated annually and assessed for Zakaat, whether the value is the same as the amount spent on it, more, or less. The owners of grocery stores, like any other business, must evaluate every item and give their Zakaat. Simple bookkeeping of inventory, orders, cash on hand, and credits, that is non-delinquent loans, will give one a good picture of the zakaatable assets. But if one is unable to account for everything in the store or shop, he should assess it according to his ability until he is sure that his conscience is clear. There is no Zakaat on what is within one's dwelling or property which includes food, drinks, furniture, houses, animals, cars, clothes and shoes. The only exception is gold and silver. There is no Zakaat on assets from rentals or lease, whether they are apartment units, taxi cabs, etc. That is, there is no Zakaat on the apartment units, buses or cars for rental like yellow cabs company or trucks for rental or equipments. But there is Zakaat on the proceeds or incomes from these rental assets if these assets reach the executable amount, either by themselves or in combination with other assets. Business Activities Many scholars are of the opinion that any business activity that brings any return to the entrepreneur or investor should be assessed for Zakaat. If the activity has a prescribed nisaab, such as gold, silver or paper currency, that nisaab is applied for Zakaat. But if the business has no declared nisaab, its nisaab is the nisaab of commerce, one reason being that most business activities are considered as commerce and because, in actual fact, it is not factitious business name, such as GM, Apple or GE that is taxed for Zakaat, it is the individual investor. We do not tax cooperations such IBM, Apple, GM or Rajihy Bank but the individual investors, share holders and owners of these corporations. Indeed, there are enough rules in Zakaat books to cover all types of business activity, be it cash or risk investment. If the business activity is analogous to commerce, it should be assessed the same rate as commerce. To subject the business to a different Zakaat rate of 10%, which is the rate of farm products instead of its correct rate of 2.5%, the rate of commerce, is unfair and unjustified. Besides, there is no proof, even a weak one, to justify this unfair arbitrary taxation. The difference between 2.5% and 10% is high. The Zakaat system is not like a state revenue collection, but Allah's `ebadah. However, if a business person decides to give more than 2.5% after deducting all the expenses including depreciation, Allah (SWT) will accept it from him. 4. Gold and silver, whether used for commerce or jewelry. Allah (SWT) states: "...And there are those who bury gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah: announce unto them a most grievous penalty. On the day when heat will be produced out of that (wealth) in the fire of hell, and with it will be branded their foreheads, their flanks and their backs. This is the (treasure) which you buried for yourselves: taste you, then, the (treasures) you buried." (Al-Qur`an, 9: 34-35). By hoarding is meant refusal to give it in the path of Allah, which includes Zakaat. In a hadith reported by Abu Hurairah (raa), the Messenger of Allah (saas) said: "For the owner or possessor of gold and silver who does not fulfill its obligation, on the Day of Resurrection it will be cast into sheets of fire and be branded on his forehead, side and back. Whenever it cools it is to be repeated for him in a day whose length is the length of fifty thousand years, until the judgement is rendered among the people." (Muslim). By its obligation is meant assessing it for Zakaat. In another version: "No possessor of a treasure who does not give its Zakaat." Zakaat is mandatory in gold and silver, irrespective of its form: in coins, raw or nugget, or jewelry for wearing, or for rent, because of the generality of evidence of Zakaat without any detail. In a report by Abdullah bin `Amr bin `Aas (raa), he related that a woman came to the Messenger of Allah with her daughter. On the daughter's wrist were two heavy gold bracelets. The Messenger asked her, "Do you pay Zakaat on this?" She replied, "No." The Messenger said: "Would it please you that Allah will encircle you with two bracelets of fire?" The reporter commented that she took them off and threw them down in front of the Messenger, and said: "They are for Allah and his Messenger." (Ahmed, Tirmidhi). The Messenger's wife reported that: "The Messenger entered into my house and saw in my hand a huge ring made of silver, so he asked, `What is this?' I replied, `I made them to beautify myself for you, O Messenger of Allah.' He inquired, `Do you give their Zakaat?' I said, `No,' or `Allah willing.' He said: `It will suffice you in the hellfire.'" (Abu Dawuud). Zakaat is due on gold when it reaches the amount of (nisaab), which is 20 Dinaar. According to a hadith, the Messenger said: "No Zakaat on you is due until it reaches 20 dinaar." (Abu Dawud) The Islamic dinaar (currency) is one mithqal, a unit of weight which weighs four and one quarter of a gram. Thus, the nisaab is 85 grams. This is equal to $30.00 US dollars. Similarly, there is no Zakaat on silver until it reaches five oqiyah, because the Messenger said: "There is no Zakaat on less then five oqiyah." (Muslim/Bukhari) Oqiyah is equal to forty Islamic dirhams. The nisaab is 200 dirhams. One dirham is equivalent to 595 grams. The zakaatable amount in both the gold and silver is a quarter of a tenth only. Paper Currency There is Zakaat on modern paper currency because it is equivalent to silver. During the early days of Islam, silver and gold were the currency of exchange minted into dirham for silver and dinaar for gold. Silver, not gold, had a larger circulation. Thus many scholars are of opinion that silver should be the standard for the paper currencies of today because that is more advantageous to the Zakaat payer, as it raises the minimum nisaab whereas gold lowers it. Although both metals are no longer circulated, they are still considered as a security against ever fluctuating paper money. Silver should be used as a standard to assess Zakaat annually, not paper currency, even if the currency is hard currency like the US dollar, Yen and Deutch Mark or Pound Sterling. Because these currencies are backed by political decisions that may not have anything to do with the economy, the value and strength of this paper money depends largely on all haram usury system of interest rates. Thus, the Zakaat payer should look up in the local newspaper's financial or business section for the price of silver which is currently about $3.82. per ounce. The nisaab, then, is 596 x .04=28.80 ounce multiplied by$3.82= 90.91. therefore. The nisaab is about $100.00, as of December 17, 1991. The nisaab should be based on the market value of the currency. If the money is hard currency, there will be no problem, but if the money is a non-marketable currency, like most currencies in the third world countries, the nisaab should be based on the black market, which realistically reflects the value of the currency on the money market. In any case, the silver rate should be used to assess the Zakaat. If the nisaab is determined, the zakaatable amount is 2.5%, or .025 multiplied by the amount. For instance, if the zakaatable amount is $56,000.00 it will be 56,000. x .025 = $1,400.00. Zakaat is due on gold, silver, and or paper currency, whether it is cash in hand or credit in the hands of borrowers. Zakaat is due on debts or cost of merchandize or rental money. If the borrower is a wealthy person that you know will pay back the debt, the lender (that is Halaal lending free of usury) should include that money in the assessment and give its Zakaat. However, one can delay Zakaat on a loan until he receives payment, then return its Zakaat for the past years that he was unable to assess for Zakaat. If the borrower is poor or is refusing to pay the debt, there will be no Zakaat on the money until the lender receives the money. Then he will assess it for Zakaat of one past due year, but there will be no Zakaat in the years before that. There is no Zakaat on precious stones such as diamonds, or metals such uranium, regardless of their value. Gold and silver, of course are assessed for Zakaat. However, if a person possesses any of these stones or metals, he should give their Zakaat like any other articles of trade. If a person possesses diamonds or any other precious stones as an edge against inflation or for ornaments, there will no Zakaat on these. How To Give Zakaat Zakaat may be assessed and returned in two ways: a) Make a record of all money earned, either daily or monthly, which has reached the nisaab and remains in the treasury. The Zakaat of that money would be due one year later on the same day the money was earned and reached nisaab. This means every month's income must be set aside and assessed for Zakaat and so will be the case for the rest of the months. For instance, the income of January, 1991 will be assessed for Zakaat in January, 1992, and the income of February, 1991 will be assessed for Zakaat in February 1992, etc. This method of assessing Zakaat is very difficult because it entails complete bookkeeping of daily or monthly earnings. b) The best way is to set a day or a month, preferably Ramadan, for your annual Zakaat return calendar, say Ramadan 1st, 1412. One year later on the same day Ramadan, 1413, your Zakaat is due and payable. Whatever is in the savings is due for Zakaat, regardless of whether all the amount in the savings reaches a year or not. For instance: if you have $20,000.00 in the savings account on the 1st of Ramadan, 1412 and one year later by the 1st of Ramadan, 1413 there is $50, 000.00, your Zakaat will be assessed for $50,000.00, that is: $50.000.00 x .025= $1,250.00. If, on the other hand, by the 1st of Ramadan, 1413 the amount in the savings is $15,000.00, your Zakaat will be for the amount in the savings, that is $15,000.00 x .025= $375.00. This method is the best because it is easy to assess, meets one's obligation and relieve one's conscience. The Recipient Of Zakaat Knowing who qualifies as recipient of Zakaat is an important aspect of Zakaat collection in Islam. Fortunately, Allah (SWT) has been merciful to us in that He Himself spelled out the people eligible to receive Zakaat. In Surah Tawbah He stated: "Alms are for the poor and the needy; and those employed to administer (the funds); for those whose hearts have been (recently) reconciled (to truth); for those in bondage and in debt; in the cause of Allah; and for the wayfarer: (thus is it) ordained by Allah, and Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom." (Al-Qur`an, 9: 60) In this verse Allah enumerated the people who deserve this divine welfare, and they are as follows: The poor and the needy. These are individuals, and those under their care, to live on. By the poor and needy is meant the people whose income or salaries, or whatever material goods they have, fall short of the cost of living in a given environment and economy. The poor and the needy should be given what will suffice them and their families for one full year. The needy who want to get married and have no means should be given enough for this purpose, and so, too, the student who needs money for tuition, rent, food, and books. The working poor should be given supplementary Zakaat. But the wealthy, or any person with enough income to live on should not be given Zakaat, even if they asked for it. Instead, they should be warned and admonished for asking for what does not belong to them. In a hadith reported by Abdullah bin `Umar, the Messenger of Allah (saas) stated: "A man keeps on asking others for something till he comes on the day of Resurrection without any piece of flesh on his face." (Bukhari/Muslim). This hadith indicates a humiliating appearance before Allah (SWT) that awaits a person who asks illegally. Some said: this hadith implies Allah will punish a person with the very limb, the face, that he used to impress on others to give him their money unlawfully. In another hadith reported by Abu Hurairah, the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever asks people for their money so as to get rich, he is asking for flames of fire. It is up to him to ask for more or less (he should beware)." (Muslim) This hadith indicates the severity of the punishment, the more one asks the more punishment, the less one asks the less the punishment. In another hadith, reported by Hakeem bin Hizaam said: I begged the Messenger of Allah and he gave me. I begged again, and he gave me. I begged again and he gave me. He then said: "This money is green and sweet; he who receives it from people with a cheerful heart, Allah will bless him in it; he who receives it, with an avaricious mind would not be blessed in it. He will be like the person who eats without being satisfied; and the upper hand is better than the lower hand" (Muslim) This hadith gave an analogy between money and green, ripened fruit that people love to eat. Thus, it indicates that both are greatly loved but easily finished. For money that is easy come easy go, one must be careful about the punishment that awaits the illegal eater. If a person asks for Zakaat and there are no signs of wealth, and he does not know that he should not ask, or a person who is well and able, who can work, but does not; if these people do not know that it is not permissible for them to ask, it may be given anyway. In a hadith reported by Ahmed, Abu Dawud, and Nasa'e, two men came to the Messenger of Allah (saas) and asked for Zakaat. He looked at them closely and found them strong and able, he said, "If you want I will give you. But you should know that the wealthy or an able person who can work has no share in Zakaat" (Ahmad) Those who administer the Zakaat department, assigning people for collecting, bookkeeping, making lists of people eligible for Zakaat, and a financial calendar. These people will receive Zakaat as compensation for their work, even if they are wealthy. This does not include a person who works as an agent for one or two wealthy people to take Zakaat for himself. They should donate their time for Zakaat disbursement and do it with honesty and truthfulness. If they can not, they should be paid or rewarded for their time. In a hadith related by Abu Musa Al-Ashi`ari (raa), the Messenger of Allah said: "A trustworthy Muslim executor is the one who executes completely what has been entrusted to him of Zakaat money in good faith." (Bukhari) That is, he will give the Zakaat money to any of the eligible recipients of Zakaat. He should carry on the duty voluntarily, but if he can not distribute the money without being paid, the Zakaat payer should pay him for his work. The payment for the service of distributing Zakaat should not come out of Zakaat money. The new converts to Islam whose hearts we want to harmonize into the fold of Islam, either because their faith is weak or we are afraid of their being harmed, should be given Zakaat to strengthen their Iman or until we no longer fear their harm. The bonds person who has contracted with his master to buy himself out of bondage deserve Zakaat and should be given enough to pay off their debt to the master and be freed themselves; similarly, Muslim prisoners of war if their freedom is tied to monetary payment, deserve Zakaat sufficient enough to secure their release. On the other hand, if a pearson accidently killed someone and have no means to pay off the blood money, he should be helped from Zakaat funds. The people in debt are of two kinds: (A) The guarantor, who takes the responsibility of someone else's debt so as to reconcile the two warring parties, to extinguish the fire of fitnah between them. If the person requests Zakaat money to pay off this debt he should be given it, which will encourage him to continue in this noble cause. In a hadith reported by Qubaysah Al-Hilaaly (raa), he said I was under debt (hamaalah) and I came to the Messenger (saas) and begged him to help me pay it off. The Messenger told him: "Wait until we receive charity, so we will command that it be given to you." However, the Messenger stated: "O Qubaysah, begging is not permitted except for one of three categories of people: A man who has incurred debt (as guarantor to reconcile blood wit) for him begging is permissible till he pays that off, after which he must stop it; a man whose property has been destroyed by calamity which has smitten him; for him begging is permissible till he gets what will support life or will provide him reasonable subsistence; and a man who has been smitten by poverty, the genuineness of which should be confirmed by three knowledgeable members of his people; for him begging is permissible till he gets what will support him, or will provide him subsistence. Besides these three, Qubaysah, begging is forbidden for every other persons, and one who engages in such consumes that which is forbidden." (Muslim) (B) Whoever incurs debt and has no money to pay it back will be given from Zakaat to help pay his debt, whether the amount is large or small; or his creditor should be paid directly on his behalf, so long as it is paid off. Zakaat can be given in the path of Allah. By this is meant to finance a Jihad effort in the path of Allah, not for Jihad for other reasons. The fighter (mujahid) will be given as salary what will be enough for him. If he needs to buy arms or some other supplies related to the war effort, Zakaat money should be used provided the effort is to raise the banner of Islam. The wayfarer. This is the traveller who in a strange land runs out of money. He or she deserves Zakaat, enough money to take him back to his country, even if he is wealthy and can find someone to loan him the money. On his part, he should take with him on his trip sufficient money, if he is wealthy, so that he will not need Zakaat. Zakaat money can not be used to pay off other obligations, such as giving Zakaat money to people you are obligated to take care of by law; or Zakaat money can not be used to pay for hotel and food expenses. It is, however, permissible to give Zakaat to a wife or family member, provided it is not part of their daily living expense money, but is needed to pay off a debt for one's wife if she can not pay it. So is the case for one's parents if they can not pay their debt. Zakaat money may be given to members of the family for their expenses if one is not obligated to take care of them financially. The wife can pay off a debt of her husband with Zakaat money, because he may be among the eight eligible recipients and she is not obligated to spend on him as he is on her. The eight eligible recipients of Zakaat can be denied their right to Zakaat without proof from Al-Qur`an or Sunnah. In a hadith reported by Ibn Mas`ud, his wife Zaynab heard the Messenger of Allah order women to give Zakaat, so she asked the Messenger (saas): " O Messenger of Allah, you commanded us to give Zakaat, and I have jewelry that I wanted to assess for Zakaat, but my husband Abdullah bin Mas`ud claimed that his son deserves it more than anyone." The Messenger replied: Your husband Ibn Mas`ud is right. Your son deserves your charity more than anyone." In another hadith reported by Salman bin `Aamir, he said the Messenger of Allah said: " Charity to the poor is only charity, but charity to the rest of kind is charity and maintenance of relations (sillah)." (Nisaee) No loan should be written off as Zakaat because Zakaat is taken and given. Allah (SWT) said: "Of their goods take alms...." (Al-Qur`an, 9: 103) And in a Hadith the Messenger has been reported as saying: "Allah has mandated on you Zakaat to be taken from the wealthy and to be given to the poor." Thus, writing off debt is not taken. For instance, If you loan a person money, you can not write off that loan as a Zakaat. However, it could be written off as sadaqah charity. Furthermore, loan, delinquent or not, is considered an absent money, therefore, it should not be transacted in Zakaat. for Zakaat is assessed only in cash in hand. Besides, debt money is valued less than cash in the hand, and using that money for alms is like exchanging good money for bad. The assessor of alms should try to give his Zakaat to an eligible person, but if he makes a mistake and gives it to an ineligible person it is accepted. In a hadith related by Abu Hurairah, he said the Messenger said: "A man expressed his intention to give charity, so he came with his charity and placed it in the hand of an adulteress. In the morning the people were talking and saying charity was given to an adulteress last night. The donor said: O Allah, to thee be the Praise - charity to an adulteress! He then again expressed his intention to give charity, so he went out with it and placed it in the hand of a rich person. In the morning the people were talking and saying charity was given to a rich person. The donor said, O Allah to You be the praise - charity to a rich man! He then expressed his intention to give charity, so he went out with his charity and placed it in the hand of a thief. In the morning the people were talking and saying charity to the thief. So the man said, O Allah to You be the praise (what a misfortune that charity has been given) to the adulteress, the rich and the thief! Then someone came to him and told him your charity has been accepted. As for the adulteress the charity might become the means whereby she might restrain from fornication. The rich man might perhaps learn a lesson and spend from what Allah has given him, and the thief might thereby restrain from committing theft. Where do I need to look to find jobs that pay appropriate MBA salaries? I am about to complete my MBA in Finance in March 2008, one month away. My undergrad is in marketing. For all of my professional career I have been in the field of sales (products and services.) Currently I am looking for new career opportunities, however I have not seen the results I want. I currently make $45K plus commission. The companies that are contacting me are offering $40 - $45K. From my research in Fort Worth, TX starting MBA salaries average $70K. The platforms I am using for my career search are individual recruiters, monster.com, careerbuilder.com, and hotjobs.com. My question is what do I need to do or where do I need to look to find more appealing job offers with a salary that fits an MBA grad? Thanks, B
Why would people blame A-Rod? The guy is going after money like any professional player would. If I were in his shoesI would do the same thing. I work in IT. If I have an offer from another company that will pay more money and a career that looks far more promising that my current employer I won't hesitate to jump ship. You people must be realy naive if they believed in the whole "I want to win" made-for-TV cliches that sports stars have made for years. It is the baseball club owners who should be blamed for inflating the market by paying outrageous amounts of money to players who do not deliver consistently.
Mineral and Gas rights?? My parents have a large piece of property that they raise cattle on and just built their dream vacation home on. They just found out that there is a large natural gas vein under their property. They arn't interested in selling their home but are entertaining the idea of leasing so they can "harvest" the natural gas. The company that has approached them has offered them 18k a year for the lease.... Something is telling me this a waaay low price that they are offering. That breaks down to about 1500 a month. Is this a low ball offer or is it about market price? If it is a low ball number what is the round about price range for something like this? Also who is the best type of professional to contact to help look out for my parents best intrest?

Describe several B2B technologies and applications? Scenario: Your brother owns a gourmet food company named Grandma's Treats, and he is faced with an interesting decision. He inherited your grandmother's recipe box and adapted the recipes to accommodate his wife's diabetes. You, your friends, and relatives couldn't tell that his creations were low sugar, and word of his delicious baked goods spread throughout the community. Last year, he left his full-time job to produce and sell his creations to the public, caterers, and restaurants. Recently, one of his restaurant chain clients approached him to supply all of their locations. They also suggested that he could attract more customers and operate his business more effectively if he creates a website, advertises, and sells his "treats" on the World Wide Web. You have more business experience than your brother does, so you've offered to help him investigate this opportunity. Starting an e-business, or expanding a current business into the Internet, involves as much planning and risk as starting or expanding a traditional business. Some of the things that you have to consider include: The cost of the technology. The design of the website. The marketing strategies you will use. The choices of what to sell and how to sell it over the Internet. The advantages of online communication with customers and suppliers. The risks of doing business on the Internet. You start exploring alternatives and seek the advice of experienced e-business professionals. There is a lot to learn, and you have heard many stories about people who have started e-businesses (or traditional businesses) and end up failing because they did not have or follow a solid plan. You will strive to understand some of the basic principles of e-business in addition to understanding traditional business strategies so you can make wise choices as you bring your brother's business into the Information Age. The varieties of tasks you will pursue are the development of an e-commerce plan, the exploration of different technologies that are used competitively in e-business, Internet marketing strategies, security, and ethics. QUESTION: Describe several B2B technologies and applications, as well as describe several applications or ways B2C can use technology that Grandma's Treats could utilize as part of an e-business strategy. Search the Cybrary and provide at least two research citations that illustrate examples of companies that are utilizing e-business strategies (e.g., B2B, B2C), and discuss how Grandma's Treats could benefit from employing similar strategies.

roubini says that there are runs on banks going on now. Why hasn't the mainstream press reported this? my question is why havent the standard news services reported this stuff? Is it that roubini is wrong, only reported anecdotal evidence and generally painting with an imprecise wide brush, or is it the case that he is right and, if the std news services report this , it would be mass chaos? a couple of lines from the detail below... Commercial paper market shut down, little trading and no issuance. A silent run on the commercial banks is underway. http://www.rgemonitor.com Nouriel Roubini | Oct 3, 2008 It is now clear that the US financial system - and now even the system of financing of the corporate sector - is now in cardiac arrest and at a risk of a systemic financial meltdown. I don’t use these words lightly but at this point we have reached the final 12th step of my February paper on “The Risk of a Systemic Financial Meltdown: 12 Steps to a Financial Disaster” (Step 9 or the collapse of the major broker dealers has already widely occurred). Yesterday Thursday a senior market practitioner in a major financial institution wrote to me the following: Situation Report: So far as I can tell by working the telephones this morning: LIBOR bid only, no offer. Commercial paper market shut down, little trading and no issuance. Corporations have no access to long or short term credit markets -- hence they face massive rollover problems. Brokers are increasingly not dealing with each other. Even the inter-bank market is ceasing up. This cannot continue for more than a few days. This is the economic equivalent to cardiac arrest. Then we debated what is necessary to restart the system. I believe that the government will do another Hail Mary pass, with massive guarantees to the short-term commercial credit system and wide open short-term lending by the Fed (2 or 3 times expansion of the Fed balance sheet). If done on a sufficient scale this action will probably work for a while. But none of these financial measures affects the accelerating recession -- which will in turn place more pressure on the financial sector. Another senior professional in a major global financial institution wrote to me: Today, in our trading room, I could see the manifestations of a lending freeze, and the funding hiatus for banks and companies, with libor bid only, the commercial paper market closed in effect, and a scramble for cash - really really scary. Do you think this is treatable without a) a massive coordinated liquidity boost and easing of monetary policy and b) widespread nationalisation of some banks, gtess to others AND a good bank/bad bank policy where some get wiped along with their investors? The Treasury Tarp plan is an irrelevance if we are at a major funding crisis. And to confirm the near systemic collapse of the system of financing of both financial firms and corporate firms Warren Buffett declared yesterday, as reported by Bloomberg: the U.S. economy is flat on the floor'' after a cardiac arrest as companies struggle to secure funding and unemployment increases. In my adult lifetime I don't think I've ever seen people as fearful, economically, as they are now,'' Buffett said today in an interview with Charlie Rose to be broadcast tonight on PBS. The economy is going to be getting worse for a while.' …The credit freeze is sucking blood'' from the U.S. economy, Buffett said. We are indeed at the cardiac arrest stage and at risk of the mother of all bank and non-ban runs as: - The run on the shadow banking system is accelerating as: even the surviving major broker dealers (Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs) are under severe pressure (Morgan losing over a third of its hedge funds clients); the run on hedge funds is accelerating via massive redemptions and a roll-off of their overnight repo lines; the money market funds are experiencing further withdrawals in spite of government blanket guarantee. - A silent run on the commercial banks is underway. In Q2 of 2008 the FDIC reported $4462bn insured domestic deposits out of $7036bn total domestic deposits; thus, only 63% of domestic deposits are insured. Thus $ 2574bn of deposits were not insured. Given the risk that many banks – small, regional and national – may go bust (as even large ones such as WaMu and Wachovia went recently bust) there is now a silent run on parts of the banking system. Deposit insurance formally covers only deposits up to $100000. Thus any individual, small or large business and/or foreign investor or financial institution with more than $100000 in a FDIC insured bank is now legitimately concerned about the safety of its deposits. Even if as likely the deposit insurance limit will be temporarily raised to $250000 by Congress there will still be a whopping $1.9 trillion of uninsured deposits (or 73% of total deposits); thus, a huge mass of uninsured deposits will remain at risk as even small businesses have usually more than $250K of cash while medium sized and large firms a

Job hunting advice in Washington DC? I'm relocating to DC and I'm having a whale of a time finding a job. I've applied to around 50 jobs in the past 3 months and have had only one contact. It's really odd too, because some people I know in the area tell me the market is great, but others say it's bad. I also understand that hiring freezes are common there right now. I have a BA degree and basically 2 years of professional experience. Anyway, I just want to see if anyone on here in the DC area could offer some advice. I've mostly been searching through University websites looking for jobs (my most recent experience is in college admissions). I've also used the Washington Post job listings and craigslist, and some company websites. Note: I WILL NOT use Monster or CareerBuilder. I listed my resume on these two websites a year and a half ago during another job search and I still to this day get identity theft/pyramid scheme/multi-level marketing scam emails all the time. Thanks so much for any help!
Being a homemaker has definitely made my relationship with my daughter stronger but I do miss working full time and putting my self to work. I have been for the past few months job hunting and I am under the impression that having taken this career break (which reflects on my Resume) has definitely close the doors to many opportunities out there. I have sent out Resumes and have answered mady Ads with just few results. I even went to a Head-Hunting Company and got an interview with a famous Insurance Co. They offered me the job for much less than what we had previously discussed! My recruiter had the nerve to tell me to take it since I have been "off the market" for a while!!!!! Help!!
Question regarding my career choice. Here is my life. Please help. Baker Hughes or Wachovia? Long read? Ok I finished school in Aug 2007 with a degree in Business Geography with emphasis in Marketing/GIS and a minor in International business. I am also becoming fluent in Chinese. So here it is Feb 08, and I have two paths to choose from. Currently I am working as a Customer Service Rep at T-mobile. I sell phones and listen to peoples complaints all day long. I am a failure in every turn when it comes to my professional life because I absolutely hate it. I had the job when I was in school, and have been trying to escape ever since I graduated. I hate sales, I want a desk job. Thats the kind of thing I want right now. I want a challenge, a computer and a schedule that is not like T-Mobile's. Now my goal for my wife and I is to work overseas one day. SO this is where my choice comes up and I need some advice. I am being offered to different jobs with two different companies with two different atmospheres. The first is being a data analyst with Baker Hughes. 9-5 job sitting at the desk analyzing data all day. No one messes with me, and I am good with that. There is some travel involved and I don’t like that as I am married and don’t want to leave my wife. She cannot come along. The guy said it would not be that much traveling, but I think he was trying to dress it up as well. And the real bad thing is, I live in Houston right now but eventually want to live on the east coast again, where I am from. The thing with the baker Hughes job is that it specializes in oil and pipeline. I was trying to kid myself and say if I can be a data analyst there I can be a data analyst anywhere. But it seems as though if I do that then I may be sticking myself in the oilfield and I don’t want to be there forever. Is it feasible to say if I can analyze data for baker Hughes, bank of America could hire me for the same thing? On of the things I do like about baker Hughes is though, that they are international, but I don’t think a data analyst gets to do anything with the overseas market starting off. My second choice is Wachovia Bank. As a Financial Representative. In other words Sales. I had a interview with them and they stated it is a lot more sales then most banks. Making 50 sales calls a day trying to get people to buy bank products. I hate sales and helping the general public. But that’s in my current job. I don’t think anyone wants to make 50 calls a day, but I really don’t like sales. But that bank is the biggest bank on the east coast, particularly in north Carolina, where I want to live or Pennsylvania where I am originally from. Now the bank job is sitting at the desk, no travel, and better pay I believe plus commissions. Overall, which path would you choose in my situation? The financial sector has more to do with my degree, but it is sales. Baker Hughes specializes and may close doors for me (or maybe not) for the future. I want to go overseas eventually to. I noticed HSBC is located in Singapore and if I can gain enough knowledge here I could be noticed then overseas with those banks as I am becoming fluent in Mandarin. Thanks guys. Sorry for the long read. also if moving overseas is several years away, our intention is to move to north carolina where wachoiva;s head quarters are and me work for corporate. And not in sales.
Question regarding my career choice. Here is my life. Please help. Long read maybe. asked earlier but nothing! I want a challenge, a computer and a schedule that is not like T-Mobile's. plz comment on the following.? N R Narayana Murthy, chief mentor and chairman of the board, Infosys Technologies, delivered a pre-commencement lecture at the New York University (Stern School of Business) on May 9. It is a scintillating speech, Murthy speaks about the lessons he learnt from his life and career. We present it for our readers: Dean Cooley, faculty, staff, distinguished guests, and, most importantly, the graduating class of 2007, it is a great privilege to speak at your commencement ceremonies. I thank Dean Cooley and Prof Marti Subrahmanyam for their kind invitation. I am exhilarated to be part of such a joyous occasion. Congratulations to you, the class of 2007, on completing an important milestone in your life journey. After some thought, I have decided to share with you some of my life lessons. I learned these lessons in the context of my early career struggles, a life lived under the influence of sometimes unplanned events which were the crucibles that tempered my character and reshaped my future. I would like first to share some of these key life events with you, in the hope that these may help you understand my struggles and how chance events and unplanned encounters with influential persons shaped my life and career. Later, I will share the deeper life lessons that I have learned. My sincere hope is that this sharing will help you see your own trials and tribulations for the hidden blessings they can be. The first event occurred when I was a graduate student in Control Theory at IIT, Kanpur, in India. At breakfast on a bright Sunday morning in 1968, I had a chance encounter with a famous computer scientist on sabbatical from a well-known US university. He was discussing exciting new developments in the field of computer science with a large group of students and how such developments would alter our future. He was articulate, passionate and quite convincing. I was hooked. I went straight from breakfast to the library, read four or five papers he had suggested, and left the library determined to study computer science. Friends, when I look back today at that pivotal meeting, I marvel at how one role model can alter for the better the future of a young student. This experience taught me that valuable advice can sometimes come from an unexpected source, and chance events can sometimes open new doors. The next event that left an indelible mark on me occurred in 1974. The location: Nis, a border town between former Yugoslavia, now Serbia, and Bulgaria. I was hitchhiking from Paris back to Mysore, India, my home town. By the time a kind driver dropped me at Nis railway station at 9 p.m. on a Saturday night, the restaurant was closed. So was the bank the next morning, and I could not eat because I had no local money. I slept on the railway platform until 8.30 pm in the night when the Sofia Express pulled in. The only passengers in my compartment were a girl and a boy. I struck a conversation in French with the young girl. She talked about the travails of living in an iron curtain country, until we were roughly interrupted by some policemen who, I later gathered, were summoned by the young man who thought we were criticising the communist government of Bulgaria. The girl was led away; my backpack and sleeping bag were confiscated. I was dragged along the platform into a small 8x8 foot room with a cold stone floor and a hole in one corner by way of toilet facilities. I was held in that bitterly cold room without food or water for over 72 hours. I had lost all hope of ever seeing the outside world again, when the door opened. I was again dragged out unceremoniously, locked up in the guard's compartment on a departing freight train and told that I would be released 20 hours later upon reaching Istanbul. The guard's final words still ring in my ears -- "You are from a friendly country called India and that is why we are letting you go!" The journey to Istanbul was lonely, and I was starving. This long, lonely, cold journey forced me to deeply rethink my convictions about Communism. Early on a dark Thursday morning, after being hungry for 108 hours, I was purged of any last vestiges of affinity for the Left. I concluded that entrepreneurship, resulting in large-scale job creation, was the only viable mechanism for eradicating poverty in societies. Deep in my heart, I always thank the Bulgarian guards for transforming me from a confused Leftist into a determined, compassionate capitalist! Inevitably, this sequence of events led to the eventual founding of Infosys in 1981. While these first two events were rather fortuitous, the next two, both concerning the Infosys journey, were more planned and profoundly influenced my career trajectory. On a chilly Saturday morning in winter 1990, five of the seven founders of Infosys met in our small office in a leafy Bangalore suburb. The decision at hand was the possible sale of Infosys for the enticing sum of $1 million. After nine years of toil in the then business-unfriendly India, we were quite happy at the prospect of seeing at least some money. I let my younger colleagues talk about their future plans. Discussions about the travails of our journey thus far and our future challenges went on for about four hours. I had not yet spoken a word. Finally, it was my turn. I spoke about our journey from a small Mumbai apartment in 1981 that had been beset with many challenges, but also of how I believed we were at the darkest hour before the dawn. I then took an audacious step. If they were all bent upon selling the company, I said, I would buy out all my colleagues, though I did not have a cent in my pocket. There was a stunned silence in the room. My colleagues wondered aloud about my foolhardiness. But I remained silent. However, after an hour of my arguments, my colleagues changed their minds to my way of thinking. I urged them that if we wanted to create a great company, we should be optimistic and confident. They have more than lived up to their promise of that day. In the seventeen years since that day, Infosys has grown to revenues in excess of $3.0 billion, a net income of more than $800 million and a market capitalisation of more than $28 billion, 28,000 times richer than the offer of $1 million on that day. In the process, Infosys has created more than 70,000 well-paying jobs, 2,000-plus dollar-millionaires and 20,000-plus rupee millionaires. A final story: On a hot summer morning in 1995, a Fortune-10 corporation had sequestered all their Indian software vendors, including Infosys, in different rooms at the Taj Residency hotel in Bangalore so that the vendors could not communicate with one another. This customer's propensity for tough negotiations was well-known. Our team was very nervous. First of all, with revenues of only around $5 million, we were minnows compared to the customer. Second, this customer contributed fully 25% of our revenues. The loss of this business would potentially devastate our recently-listed company. Third, the customer's negotiation style was very aggressive. The customer team would go from room to room, get the best terms out of each vendor and then pit one vendor against the other. This went on for several rounds. Our various arguments why a fair price -- one that allowed us to invest in good people, R&D, infrastructure, technology and training -- was actually in their interest failed to cut any ice with the customer. By 5 p.m. on the last day, we had to make a decision right on the spot whether to accept the customer's terms or to walk out. All eyes were on me as I mulled over the decision. I closed my eyes, and reflected upon our journey until then. Through many a tough call, we had always thought about the long-term interests of Infosys. I communicated clearly to the customer team that we could not accept their terms, since it could well lead us to letting them down later. But I promised a smooth, professional transition to a vendor of customer's choice. This was a turning point for Infosys. Subsequently, we created a Risk Mitigation Council which ensured that we would never again depend too much on any one client, technology, country, application area or key employee. The crisis was a blessing in disguise. Today, Infosys has a sound de-risking strategy that has stabilised its revenues and profits. I want to share with you, next, the life lessons these events have taught me. 1. I will begin with the importance of learning from experience. It is less important, I believe, where you start. It is more important how and what you learn. If the quality of the learning is high, the development gradient is steep, and, given time, you can find yourself in a previously unattainable place. I believe the Infosys story is living proof of this. Learning from experience, however, can be complicated. It can be much more difficult to learn from success than from failure. If we fail, we think carefully about the precise cause. Success can indiscriminately reinforce all our prior actions. 2. A second theme concerns the power of chance events. As I think across a wide variety of settings in my life, I am struck by the incredible role played by the interplay of chance events with intentional choices. While the turning points themselves are indeed often fortuitous, how we respond to them is anything but so. It is this very quality of how we respond systematically to chance events that is crucial. 3. Of course, the mindset one works with is also quite critical. As recent work by the psychologist, Carol Dweck, has shown, it matters greatly whether one believes in ability as inherent or that it can be developed. Put simply, the former view, a fixed mindset, creates a tendency to avoid challenges, to ignore useful negative feedback and leads such people to plateau early and not achieve their full potential. The latter view, a growth mindset, leads to a tendency to embrace challenges, to learn from criticism and such people reach ever higher levels of achievement (Krakovsky, 2007: page 48). 4. The fourth theme is a cornerstone of the Indian spiritual tradition: self-knowledge. Indeed, the highest form of knowledge, it is said, is self-knowledge. I believe this greater awareness and knowledge of oneself is what ultimately helps develop a more grounded belief in oneself, courage, determination, and, above all, humility, all qualities which enable one to wear one's success with dignity and grace. Based on my life experiences, I can assert that it is this belief in learning from experience, a growth mindset, the power of chance events, and self-reflection that have helped me grow to the present. Back in the 1960s, the odds of my being in front of you today would have been zero. Yet here I stand before you! With every successive step, the odds kept changing in my favour, and it is these life lessons that made all the difference. My young friends, I would like to end with some words of advice. Do you believe that your future is pre-ordained, and is already set? Or, do you believe that your future is yet to be written and that it will depend upon the sometimes fortuitous events? Do you believe that these events can provide turning points to which you will respond with your energy and enthusiasm? Do you believe that you will learn from these events and that you will reflect on your setbacks? Do you believe that you will examine your successes with even greater care? I hope you believe that the future will be shaped by several turning points with great learning opportunities. In fact, this is the path I have walked to much advantage. A final word: When, one day, you have made your mark on the world, remember that, in the ultimate analysis, we are all mere temporary custodians of the wealth we generate, whether it be financial, intellectual, or emotional. The best use of all your wealth is to share it with those less fortunate. I believe that we have all at some time eaten the fruit from trees that we did not plant. In the fullness of time, when it is our turn to give, it behooves us in turn to plant gardens that we may never eat the fruit of, which will largely benefit generations to come. I believe this is our sacred responsibility, one that I hope you will shoulder in time. Thank you for your patience. Go forth and embrace your future with open arms, and pursue enthusiastically your own life journey of discovery!
case analysis? CASE After ten years of service with Big Adverting Agency, Grace Cruz advanced to the position of the account executive. As her first assignment, she was given the account of Robb Laboratories, Inc.Robb’s major product is a patent medicine for the common cold known as C-Tab. Although the company and its products have existed for 78 years, it had never been among the leaders in its field. C-Tab ranked last among the four similar products on the market. The adverting campaign Grace developed for C-Tab was built around testimonials of satisfied users. Each person in the ad testifies that he or she had tried all competing products but got relief only from c-Tab. The people used in the ads were solicited and paid by the agency. From the beginning, the ad was successful. C-Tab sales moved up sharply. Within a year, the product ranked second among its competitors and continue to gain foothold in the market. The big executives were happy, and so were the stockholders. And Grace and her agency, too. To celebrate the success of the advertising campaign, Grace’s boss held a party. At the party, Grace was talking to a medical doctor friend who questioned her about her work. ‘so you got a few million people to use C-Tab, did you?” he said. “Well, it won’t hurt them. But there’s no scientific proof that C-Tab will help cure a cold. And that goes for C-Tab’s three competitors, too. Is this the usual mark seen in other drugs as “clinically proven” or ”health bureau approved” after they were analyzed? 6.Would the Big Ad. Agency be responsible for any complaints about the C-Tab [if there would be ever; such as adverse effects] since they made the ad? Or it would solely be accounted to the Robb Lab.? 7.Was there any motive why the case emphasized that the people used in the ad were solicited and paid by ht agency [isn’t it normal to advertising?]? was ther any foul play? Were they only paid just to aid the sales performance of the Robb Lab.? 8.Would the Robb Lab/Big Ad. Agency be triggered of the doctor’s interrogation to do another ad., but now containing now the scientific proof? 9.Was the Big Ad. Agency been responsible and just accepting the offer of the Robb Lab. about the ad for the C-Tab [though it has no scientific proof]? 10.Is it an S.O.P. to an advertising agency to first analyze the product/service offered by an advertiser before making it with an ad? If yes, why did the Big Ad. Agency accept the C-Tab’s ad.? 11.What was the reason why Robb Lab. didn’t have the scientific proof yet for the C-Tab since the company was in the market already for 78 yrs? 12.How did the doctor know that the C-Tab has no scientific proof? a.he was the company [Robb. Lab., Inc./Big Lab Agency] doctor b.he was a professional doctor, htus he knows it. [besides, he prescribe drugs] c.or…what does he know about the C-Tab?!! He is well respected by a number of his clients and as a result has been offered a position on the board of ABC Pty Ltd (a listed company), to take effect immediately earning him fees of $20,000 plus 2000 shares (2% of the company's total shares). Furthermore, as a way of introducing him to the other members of the board they have agreed to pay his air fares and accommodation to the next board meeting to be held in 2 months. Currently the audit firm provides other financial services such as taxation and IT consulting for the general accounting software, legal services and employs a number of recently qualified accountants to assist in collecting data for an audit and to provide bookkeeping services for preparing the financial report. Also, various clients engage the auditing firm to provide valuation services for assets that form part of the financial report and give advice on what board recommendations should be implemented. For example, the auditor is asked to provide advice on marketing strategy. It should be noted that while the accountants were completing work for the annual accounts they were under the direct control of the company management. It has also been agreed with the other partners in the audit firm that John Jones will be paid a bonus on retirement if he can grow his client base by 25% in the 12 months leading up to his retirement. In order to achieve this John was engaged in an extensive advertising campaign where he offered all prospective clients different auditing packages which depended on how much the client was willing to pay for the audit. In order to secure a new client that would bring in an additional 20% of total fees for the firm, the client was offered a separate proposal, this being extended payment terms for paying the audit fee and an agreement that the time for auditing the accounts would not exceed three weeks. Required 1.Identify any professional standards and regulatory requirements that may have been breached. Make special reference to factors affecting auditor independence. 2.What action should John Jones take to avoid potential threats or risks to his objectivity?
