Should Republicans be ashamed that the free market can`t clean up their own spill? Obama aka government is not fast enough, Obama aka government is not doing enough. But BP a private company is making Republicans look like fools with their smaller government talking point when our government right now is too small to have the tools to stop the leak. Not to mention that we have to wait for a spill big enough for the free market to have demand to make or buy safer equipment. Or should our government make these companies buy the best equipment?

How effective are these marketing strategies on you? Reciprocity a marketing tool where you give people something of value for free, they reciprocate by purchasing your product or service. Ex. "get a free camera when you subscribe to our magazine for two years." No credit card requierd "one month of free Internet service" ." If the Internet service performs well, the prospective customer feels an obligation to sign up. Scarcity There is a limited amount of the item available. After those are gone, the item will not be available. "urgency" implies Scarcity. For example, "this offer will be honored only for a limited time". Commitment A prospective customer makes that first commitment towards purchasing the product by requesting the free information. The free information they receive is designed to entice them to take the next step. Have you ever been tricked by any of these scam and what do you think tricked you?

Should I market my online blog to the offline world? Like print those small notes and paste around in public. I thought of that but I wonder should I do it as part of my marketing, because my site is about researching on Panic Attacks and to give free tips and techniques. I just find it hard to target the audience out there. But still, should I just advertise to the offline public? I have tried many other marketing techniques online already - promotional video, articles, give the link to people in yahoo-answers (which the account that I created solely for that got banned), a few link-exchange, main sites about panic-attacks, commenting people's video on coping panic-attacks and such with my link, listed my site to site directories, etc. I am aiming to use free marketing tools. And I also just added site-feeds and feed subscription for readers of my blog.
Out of the box thinkers-Website marketing on a shoestring budget? Ideas? My daughter & I started a website WWW.FAIRYGIFTMOTHERS.COM and between that and purchasing inventory we are left with little to no money to promote or get our site marketed. Any free places to go? Any ideas on how we can get traffic to our site to get much needed sales? I have resorted to a very SLOW way and that is by chat in games on other sites and here at YA, also business card handouts & flyer's. I researched all the different marketing tools and pay per click stuff. The are way out of our league. Would asking people to email this website out to everyone on their address list be a good way? Need some out of the box thinkers here, ideas?
Where can i find information about free mass traffic? I have heard its a new internet marketing tool and I'm not sure if its a scam or not. MLM Lead System Pro does it work? I am trying to sell herbal products and i really need to know how to generate leads besides flyers all over town. Everytime i hit a search engine i have noticed that i get an email saying buy this etc to generate leads. I also notice it may not be the same company but the same gimmick. Can someone advise if they used the MLM Lead System pro and got some decent results. From what I am gathering it looks like you are promoting their business and barely your own. I want someone to review my products. I have lost tons of weight and i actually really want to share what i learned with others. I dont have much money and i know you have to put out a little money out to get leads besides the social networking but i really want to be sure if i put out money it generates at least what i paid for it. Please yahoo members and not someone trying to sell this product from MLM. I already have tons of those emails by falling for one of their ** FREE MARKETING TOOLS. Do i need to buy my own softwear? thanks Yahoo you always help. Also i got emails from optmpress as well so please no more emails from this company as well. I know you have to put money somewhere but i really need to be sure i put my money in the right place. I am on facebook , craigslist etc. How long does it really take to see some results in the small leads i get would also be helpful. I know it takes time to sell i have energy but the MLM lead program was almost 45 minuets and when i found out it was another sell I was fit to be tied** I am not mad at their marketing but i just need to know is this the only way to get real leads besides on the street passing out flyers all day. someone is making money and it has to be not just facebook. thanks!!
Help Needed Tips for Self-Advertising? I just started a online home business with a phone company called G.V.I Solutions. My job as a affiliate is to refer people to my website. I get commissions for when they sign-up and then they become my customers, plus I get commissions for whoever they refer to and so on. Now this company have free marketing tools that I can use, but I have to do some self-advertising myself. So far I've been using the internet to do this. What do you think is the best ecommerce web designing software that you can create your own website? I've already found it but want to know your answer. Here's what it will do: Besides the company having a great success track record, the owner is a wealthy Internet marketer; The software tool is great for everyone, even a teenager uses it and makes over $2000/mo.; It's a pre-signed, automated, income generating website. You don't need any technical skills; It's user-friendly, customer-friendly and search engine-friendly, meaning it's SEO-ready (can get you high page ranking and free traffic); it's for beginners and advanced users- can customize any of the many templates -- and personalize it; hosting is included; it has many Internet marketing software tools, including keyword software for niche marketing; you get many free ebooks; forum membership; there are many success stories and testimonials; the owner/company OVERdelivers; great customer service and teach support; Teaches everything you need to know about Internet marketing, advertising, PREselling, making additional money, etc.
Privacy Issue with Facebook.? I am very new to the whole FaceBook movement, but it is a wonderful and free marketing tool, as well as a social form of communication. Will I realize that there are different levels of privacy, I would like to know if it is possible for one to log onto their FaceBook page without anyone knowing you're on FaceBook. What a terrible inconvenience to be upgrading your content and your friends "pop up" wanting to chat (because they can see you're online). If it is possible, please give step by step instructions. Thanks. One more question. Sometimes I search for old friends to see what they are up to. I have no desire to be their friend, I'm just being noisy. Some times you are able to see their content and other times you're not, depending on their privacy settings. None the less, can the person I'm looking into know I was there?
Do regulations in the marketing and advertising department should be revised? everyday we see tons and tons of commercial, some are really agressive for the human consicence. Futhermore It reduces the appearance of small markets and we dont know the real effects of a human beeing constantly exposed to advertizing. Sure I understand the economic aspect behind the matter...(tv, radio, and sponsorship its essential..) but lets put that aside and just look at the question and ask if the morality behind the advertizements is right?..on one hand, one have the freedom to sell you anything as long as it does not harm you( my argument there is just one's gotta be able to judge what is right for him or what is wrong, and this is not their problems if they fool you because you are free to choose) but on the other hand, the power and the tools that compagny have could be so powerful that some day it' will fool anybody..even the smartest( I push to the extreme just to show my point).. So were do we have to draw the line? here's my question..I'll be very interrested to know!

What do you think about photographers who work for free? By Matt Brown Stop working for free! Next time you're in the local hardware store, ask the salesman to give you free tools and tell him in return you will tell all your friends you got your tools from his hardware store. Or try it at the grocery store. I can see it now, standing at the check at line: "That we be $102.85, sir." "You don't know me but I will tell everyone I know to shop at Ralph's if I can just get my groceries for free". "Sure Mr. Brown nobody knows about us yet, here's your food and have a nice day!" Sweet! Can you send me a photo? Can I get a photo for free? We will give you credit for the photo! How many times have you heard that? Free! Free! Free! I've had CBS.com, Wilson Sporting Goods Global Marketing, Fox Sports, ESPN.com, ABC, CBS, Fox, Rivals.com, Baseball America, college websites and yes, newspapers, magazines, all ask for FREE photos. Some are even willing to give me photo credit. Wow! Give me photo credit for a photo I created! So these companies can take it and make money from a product I provided free. Yes, money. The bottom line here is money. Give me your photos for free and I can post them on their company website or run it in a publication. .. what a concept! I received an email the other day from a CBS College Sports Network production assistant. Here is the exchange: "Matt, I hope all is well. Can you email me six Cal State Fullerton Baseball action photos from this season? Thanks, Mr. X" I replied that day: "Mr. X, There will be a charge for use of the photos. Matt" The response: "Matt, My boss said no due to the fee...sorry. Thanks, Mr. X" At the same time I was emailing Mr. X, he was emailing Mr. Greenlee, the Sports Information Director at Cal State Fullerton asking if he can get me to waive the fee because CBS just doesn't have the money to buy photos. Did you know what David Letterman makes a year? Dave signed a contract in 2006 that makes him a reported $38 million a year! Why can't CBS buy my photos ($50 each) for their website? I emailed Mr. X and asked if CBS ever pays for photos. What he wrote back was shocking: Southern California freelance photographer Matt Brown shot this during a portrait lighting class with Cal State Fullerton basketball player Frank Robinson during Sports Shooter Academy V. "Matt:Cal State Fullerton was the 1st school that we came across that charges a fee to use photos. Other schools just gladly give them to us for free and we credit the photographer or sports information from the school…whichever they prefer. I have yet to see CBS College Sports pay for photos to use. Mr. X" Well that answers why can't CBS buy my photos ($50 each) for their TV show: Because you or your boss is handing out photos for free! Maybe you don't know this is happening or you just like seeing your byline on a website. But it's just bad business. I never had anyone call me up after seeing my photos on ESPN.com and say we NEED you to shoot our annual report or our next catalog. Maybe schools have something worked out with their photographers about handing out photos to websites. Maybe the photographer gets paid extra for the ability to hand the photos out. Just make sure you know what is happening to your work. I have a feeling a lot of photographers don't know what happens to their photos. I had another jaw dropping moment when a former athlete from one of my schools who now works in the SID office at a PAC-10 school, told me when athletes ask her for photos, she would just burn them a CD full of photos. MY TWO SCHOOLS Two of my bigger clients are Division I schools, Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton. I have established the rules for working for them and the do's and don't of using my work are set in writing. 1) I own all my photos, not the school. 2) Photos can go out to local newspapers and the newspaper of the hometown of the student athlete. 3) No photos go to magazines, websites, players, family or fans and all referrals go through me. One school follows the rules with no trouble. The other school is hard headed. I have found photos on the websites and magazine and I get the line: "We should have the ability to publicize our programs." I understand their point of view. But here's my point of view: If the schools just hand my photos over to another source they are going to make money from my work and I am getting nothing in return. Isn't it reasonable to expect to be paid fairly for photos? HURTING A FRIEND As you know, we work in a small community, which is getting smaller everyday. A good friend of mine, Larry Goren does freelance work for Baseball America. He covers Major League Baseball, the minor leagues and college baseball for them on a regular basis. Larry covers 4 - 5 Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton baseball games a year. Baseball America would call Cal State Fullerton or Long Beach State and ask for free baseball photos for its website or magazine. By getting photos from the schools for free they wouldn't have to pay Larry for his photos. Faculty member and freelance photographer Matt Brown gives advice to participant Sawitree Crowe while covering an NCAA men's baseball game at Cal State Fullerton during Sports Shooter Academy V held in Orange County, CA. I put a stop to it after locking horns with Baseball America a couple times. Remember we are working in a small community and we must lookout for each other. We can help or hurt each other's bottom line. LOSING OUT TO THE WORKING Last week I had two schools, Purdue and Nevada, email me about shooting the NCAA Women's Softball Regional at UCLA. I gave them a cost for shooting per game. I sent samples and waited to hear back from them. You would think if someone goes out of their way to get in touch with you, it might be a done deal and they are serious about hiring a professional. The next day I heard from them: Both schools are going with someone else. I asked them who the photographer was and how much was he charging and I was told it was a professor from the UCLA Science Department. I know some people at the campus and made some calls. I found out his name and did some homework on being a professor at UCLA. This Weekend Warrior makes over $90,000 a year, loves taking sports photos and regularly hands over free photos to schools. He just picked up the phone and called the schools looking to shoot for them during the playoffs. The cost he was asking: $100. Not per game, for the entire weekend! That's 3 or 4 games for $100 total! I emailed Joseph Rudnick, Dean of Chemistry & Biochemistry at UCLA, asking if could work at school on Tuesday and Thursday for free because I just love science. I told him I received an A+ in Biochemistry in college. Think about it for a second. We have people who just love taking photos for free or dirt-cheap as a hobby and think that they can do what you do for a living (as a professional photographer) . I went to school for photography and I have busted my ass to get where I'm at and for what? So some professor can do below average work for cheap? Why can't I teach biochemistry for little or no cost? I never heard back from the dean, too bad ... I was really looking forward to teaching biochemistry at UCLA. Well, if you can't read it, why you even bother answering? Don't. And it's nothing what happened to me - it's a common issue and that was written by Matt Brown, who is a freelance photographer based in Southern California. He is also the co-director of the Sports Shooter Academy.

I'm looking for some good sites for doing some free online marketing? I was wondering are there any websites or services that offer free online marketing tools, such as autoresponders, email blast submissions, or classified ads that I can use to help advertise my website? And if so, has anybody ever tried any of these services and what were your results from using them? Thanks!

Women are they oppressed or free? There is a growing veiw that society is being subliminally conditioned to assume that Muslim women are oppressed and non muslim women are enjoying the fruits of freedom - can this be so.I live in the west and women have become the greatest marketing tool selling everything from toothbrushes, choclate, alcohol, cars, games and anything you can think, can you think of the harm this type of exposure can cause (they will be the mother's of the next genartions) and we promote them in a visual form of pornagraphy. your thoughts please!
What do Republicans and Sen. McCain think about government bailouts? This is an exact quote from the Republican Party's platform, adopted just three weeks ago in St. Paul: "We do not support government bailouts of private institutions. Government interference in the markets exacerbates problems in the marketplace and causes the free market to take longer to correct itself. We believe in the free market as the best tool to sustained prosperity and opportunity for all." How would you square this statement with what is going on the past week or two in Washington, including Sen. McCain's acquiescence that some sort of government intervention is needed? Maybe party platforms are just an exercise to give delegates something to do? http://www.gop.com/2008Platform/Economy.htm @seahag: I hadn't thought of it that way. Your math is not quite right -- $700 billion divided into about 300 million people is about $2333 per person. But that's a novel and brilliant idea. Much better than trying to save failed companies. Send the checks!
What is OBAMA going to do to help the economy? All we hear is him say "same old same old" yet he does not seem to have any understanding of a democratic free market system. Other than government intervention, what policies does he support to stimulate the economy, and what prevention tools does he want to put in place?

What are the best websites for investors? I am a university student with a decent understanding of the stock market. I have decided to invest some of my monies and would like to know where to go for research purposes. What are the best websites when it comes to business news, stock market tools, analysts ratings and everything else to do with the economy and both the domestic and international markets. I am aware of CNNmoney, msnbc, yahoofinance. Please inform me of your favourites, preferably not any of the ones I mentioned above although you are free to advise me which one of those I mentioned are the best. One more thing, please don't list websites that have been listed by others. Thank you very much for your help One more thing, please don't list websites that have been listed by others. Thank you very much for your help A number of people have put up websites that are obvious SCAMS. Do not waste your time posting bogus websites because I am just too bright to fall for your cheap tricks.
Financial: Looking for some investment advice on monitoring insider trading? I've heard that Insider BUY/SELL data is a good indicator of stock future. I've been tracking this for the past month and for as many stocks that increase in value, just as many decrease. What are some additional KPIs that I should monitor or could use to filter out the duds? I'm sure some of it has to do with the recession, but smart investors are still out there making money. If you know of any good, FREE market analysis and research tools please let me know. Thanks, Top Buddy
Is capitalism a form of natural selection? Those who don't have the tools (education, intelligence, inherent desire for more and more, parental gifts, inheritance, proper race or gender, connections, the right country, or pure luck) simply perish or become free market serfs. People really are starving and dying, so the similarities are there. Your view?
What is the best spyware and malware remover on the market at this time? I know someone installed some malware on my computer because a tiny black clock shows in the left corner of the screen preventing me from accessing the internet every time I try to open Google. What would you recommend I buy. I have all the free tools like Ad-Aware and Advanced Windows Care but I need something more powerful
Is "Pro Tools" the best audio mixing program on the market, or is there something better? I've been wanting to get a new audio mixing program for sometime. I mix and remaster cds in my collection, it's a hobby of mine. I currently have Goldwave to do the job, but I've heard great things about Pro Tools. Is it really the best program out there, and if it is, how much do they cost? Are there programs out there that are simular that are for free?
How would you specify and aquire your ideal, high-power, tracking, stable, portable, reflecting telescope? What would you choose for the aperture and focal length? Assume that you already have a good 5" GEM, Newtonian reflector. What would you buy pre-assembled (given outstanding competition in today's free market) and what would you build yourself to save costs? I like the split ring mount and the equatorial platform. Assume no access to powered wood working or metal working tools. What would be your specifications and your approach for an ideal telescope along these lines, but on a budget of about $50 a month with as much time as is needed for aquiring a powerful, quality celestial probe.
Can/should I use free sites like blogger to create a blog which I aim to monetize I am planning on starting a web based business in the future and as a project I am going to start a blog (unrelated to the business idea) and try to learn how to build traffic and make some money from it. I'm not expecting a major cashflow from this, more of just an incentive to grow some entrepreneurial marketing skills and such. Since at the moment I am studying and don't have a job, I would prefer a free site like blogger to start up my blog as long as I can use 3rd party advertising things on it and other tool you use to make money from blogs
Which of the following is one way the Federal Reserve Bank serves the government? 1. making loans to the government 2. selling government securities 3. minting coins for the government 4. financing state government projects (I don't think its B or C!!) The Fed often buys or sells government securities to alter the money supply. This monetary policy tool is called 1. Closed Market Operations 2. Free Market Operations 3. Open Market Operations 4. Has anyone used an "Inbound Marketing Tool" such as HubSpot http://www.hubspot.com for advertising? I am not affiliated. I am interested in knowing if there are any other services that offer a comparable service to this in a similar Search Engine Optimization. I believe Google Analytics, Clicky, and Rhinoseo provide nearly all of the same data that Hubspot collects at a cost of $0, but then HubSpot charges $6,000 a year for its services. Is there something I'm missing with this company and why do you think they are charging this much a year for its service, while other companies can provide free technologies? How can any new business see that these costs are well worth it? Has anyone used or know any companies that use their "inbound marketing" services? Can this be affective way of getting traction on a website or would hiring a SEO all-star full time be better recommended for a startup?
Are unions demonized these days? Aren't they good for America because they encourage workers to use their own labor as a free market bargaining tool to negotiate health and safety standards, fair hours and wages (so they don't have to depend on tax payer money like a lot of Wal-Mart workers who don't have their right to unionize), and other rights that third world countries don't have? Just because our corrupt governments made outsourcing easy (yet the corporations still get all the tax payer benefits of corporations that stay in the US) and other countries treat their workers badly, does that mean we should follow and take the low road too? Should we focus on incentives for not outsourcing instead (and disincentives for those who outsource) instead? No it's not, that's just propaganda and an excuse to get rid of decent wages and benefits! In fact, American labor has gotten so cheap that even Japan outsources some on their labor (of Toyotas and other cars) right here in the US! Not true again--when unions were broken up in the meat packing industry, illegal immigrant workers were then employed bringing wages down drastically; and it also made the job harzardous and deadly when it used to be safe. I don't want to bail them out either. The bailouts won't help workers just like they didn't help borrowers and homeowners (they're left on their own, unlike the corporations). They could have helped if the bailout was conditional (that they'll only get helped if they also agree to spread out the payments of their borrowers as well). But they got to have their handout without any sacrifice to their profits.
Can I use 'public domain' graphics free-of-charge for the cover of my written fiction...? ...if I credit the artist of the images? I'm writing a book (fiction) and I have found two images on the Internet that I believe would be 'eye-catching' marketing tools. Unfortunately, the artwork is currently being used by a music group for two of their album covers. Where can I get info regarding copyrights and the payment due to the artists of same, as ruled on by Canadian business law? (Sorry, two questions, but I don't want to see anyone (myself included) hurt by copyright infringement.) Later Daze! =) Trank

Best virus removal tools? Best Antivirus? I'd like to know what the best virus/malware/trojan/worm/spyware/whatever removal is. Also I'd like to know what the best anti-virus is. I'm not in the market for ONLY free programs. I'm just in the market for the best hands down. Is the scan and removal seperate from the anitvirus? that's fine.. I'm not lazy. Also any advise as far as firewalls go would be nice too! I really want to get my computer locked down and safe. Thanks!
what is the best website hosting site? Doesn't have to be free, willing to pay a small amount, as long as it has some good tools, templates, marketing program, affiliate program, business tools, etc?
Would you buy my executive nose picking tools set? I have been thinking for some time that there may be a market for a set of nose picking tools. We all know the frustration when there's a thick potentially tasty and crunchy bit stuck to the side of the nostril. Try as you might you just cant prise it free, maybe your finger nails are cut too short, but its stuck firmly. What you need is a small hoe like tool. We could have say three different tools, a type of hoe, a hook like device and some tweezers for pulling out hairs that get in the way. We could make them of sterling silver and put them in a leather pouch. I've searched for such tools on google "Nose picking + tools" but with no luck. Would you buy a set?
Portfolio management software with yearly gain tracking? I've tried over a dozen web portfolio managers. However, most only track total gains for the initial investment and does not have a way to break out how much my gains are for a specific year. Is there a good tool or software out there in the market either for free or for purchase?

How can I better optimize my website for more traffic? I am a beginner but have learned a lot about search engine optimization (SEO). We have worked on Google AdWord campaigns, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and used Google Analytics. We used a broad search as well as an industry specialized search, which has obviously been more cost effective. I have recently submitted our company and link to multiple industry directories with higher PageRank than ours. I have used free keyword tools found in AdWords, Analytics, and Search Marketing, respectively, as well as the free tool on wordtracker. Also, we have recently created static pages to our web site for added content. Hopefully our recent steps (directory submission, upping our bids in PPC programs, and creating content based pages) will work. Can anyone help on ways to direct more traffic to our site? Help us maximize our ROI? We usa a dynaminc web site but want to raise our PageRank and site visits. Thank you, e-mail: arsenal11385@yahoo.com http://www.peaktopeakpower.com

Can I establish my own Futures Market Database by manually typing in price feeds and allow general public use? Currently I am in the process of establishment so I want to minimize my costs. I do not have exact idea about the rules so I request the person who knows about it. I am not in position to pay heavy costs for Commodity Futures Market Data. I want to feed it into my database manually and then develop a technical analysis software that will take End of Day Data from my database. I want to make available that application/technical analysis software to general public free of cost. Anybody knows that can I establish my own database like this and then make it available to general public for use for free? That Java application will be emeded into my web site and SQL Sever will act as the backend tool to keep the full data.

Is Great INFLATION coming ?? 2008/2009? The so-called "credit crisis" is gaining momentum. Investors increasingly question the solidity of the banking system, as evidenced by banks' tumbling stock prices and rising funding costs. With bank credit supply expected to tighten, the profit outlook for the corporate sector, which has benefited greatly from "easy credit" conditions, deteriorates, pushing firms' market valuations lower. In fact, peoples' optimism has given way to fears of job losses and recession on a global scale. Free market advocates, however, should not get carried away by the price action in the market place. In a free market, there is nothing wrong with individuals reassessing hitherto held expectations, entailing changes in relative prices. A free market is a discovery process, based on trial and error. Usually the effects of errors made by some are compensated for by the gains of successful decisions taken by others, and the economy expands. Sometimes, however, the effects of errors dominate, and the economy experiences what people call a crisis: income growth is (feared to be) lower than what people think it should, and could, be. In that sense a crisis is a correction of bad decisions. It is an indispensable part of the free market. It pushes those producers out of business who do not satisfy the needs of their clients, and it rewards those who serve their customers well. A crisis must be feared, however, if it has been caused by government action, and if the obvious signs of the crisis provoke ever greater doses of government intervention. In this case, the market would be prevented from doing its job properly. Bad decisions would be perpetuated, and the ultimate crisis may become nasty. Diagnosing the Causes of the Crisis It is against this background that one may wish to review the US central bank's series of rate cuts, the latest being a big 75-basis-points rate slash on January 22, 2008, which brought the official Fed Funds Target Rate to 3.5%.[1] While the Fed's moves were mostly hailed in public as appropriate measures to help the economy avoid recession, Austrian economists hold a completely different view. According to the Austrian Monetary Theory of the Trade Cycle it is the government-run money-supply monopoly that has not only caused the crisis; the theory also diagnoses that rate cuts will not solve the crisis, but will make it even worse. Central banks, the government agents holding the power over the printing press, pursue a monetary policy of "interest rate steering" or, in other words, pushing the interest rate down as much as possible by relentlessly increasing credit and money supply. It is this inflationary monetary policy that causes trouble. Ludwig von Mises pointed out that today credit expansion is exclusively a government practice. As far as private banks and bankers are instrumental in issuing fiduciary media, their role is merely ancillary and concerns only technicalities. The governments alone direct the course of affairs. They have attained full supremacy in all matters concerning the size of circulation credit. While the size of the credit expansion that private banks and bankers are able to engineer on an unhampered market is strictly limited, the governments aim at the greatest possible amount of credit expansion.[2] Initially, the artificial lowering of the interest rate creates an illusion of richness and affluence. The increase in the money stock via bank credit expansion erroneously suggests that the supply of savings increases. Investment picks up, and the economy expands. The illusion of plentiful resources leads to malinvestment, and sooner or later the boom turns into a bust. While the money-fueled expansion is a manifestation of the crisis, it is actually the slump — the correction of malinvestment — that people complain about. The alleged fight against the crisis Once a crisis unfolds, central banks are called upon to lower interest rates — in ignorance of the fact that a monetary policy of pushing down the interest rate has caused the misery in the first place. Cheaper borrowing costs, it is believed, would revive the economy by stimulating investment and consumption, thereby adding to output and employment. Lower interest rates would raise the prices of stocks, bonds, and housing, translating into "wealth effects" which in turn strengthen demand. The obsession with a policy of lowering the interest rate is rooted in a deep-seated ideological aversion against the interest rate. It is a destructive ideology, in particular if the government is in charge of the money supply. Because then the government central bank will lower the interest rate to whatever is deemed appropriate from the viewpoint of the government, pressure groups, and vested interest. However, the interest rate is a reflection of peoples' "time preference": because of scarcity, people value goods and services available today ("present goods") more highly than goods and services available at a later point in time ("future goods").[3] This is why present goods trade at a premium over future goods. That premium is the interest rate, or the "time preference rate." The interest rate is a free-market phenomenon. A policy of suppressing the market interest rate through a government-sponsored credit expansion, Mises noted, is a policy against the free market: Credit expansion is the governments' foremost tool in their struggle against the market economy. In their hands it is the magic wand designed to conjure away the scarcity of capital goods, to lower the rate of interest or to abolish it altogether, to finance lavish government spending, to expropriate the capitalists, to contrive everlasting booms, and to make everybody prosperous.[4] Causing Inflation A monetary policy of lowering the interest rate via expanding credit and money corresponds to the widely held view that "some inflation" is a requisite for economic expansion. In fact, the "inflation bias" has become so widespread that nowadays inflation (the rise in the money supply) is much less feared than deflation (the decline in the money supply). Mises was aware of what happens once the inevitable crisis caused by a manipulation of the interest rate unfolds: "In the opinion of the public, more inflation and more credit expansion are the only remedy against the evils inflation and credit expansion have brought about."[5] The current credit crisis is a sad case in point: with monetary policy having caused inflation and malinvestment, it is now called upon to pursue a policy that leads to even more inflation and malinvestment. Could monetary policy become "ineffective," that is, could it fail to create inflation? For instance, the Bank of Japan's rate cuts around the beginning of the 1990s — as a reaction to falling asset prices and a growing volume of bad loans in banks' portfolio — did not succeed in bringing credit and money growth rates back to precrisis levels. Even with official rates at virtually zero, the economy remained in stagnation and the Japanese stock market continued to decline. Against the backdrop of the Japanese experience it should be noted that there is no limit to central-bank money printing. Central banks can, at any one time, buy any assets from banks and nonbanks such as bonds, real estate, foreign currencies, etc. If a central bank buys, say, debt from the corporate sector, it increases the money stock in the hands of nonbanks directly; the commercial banking sector is not needed for increasing the money supply. Central banks' unlimited power over the money supply has been made pretty clear by the chairman of the US Federal Reserve, Ben S. Bernanke, in November 2002: [T]he U.S. government has a technology, called a printing press (or, today, its electronic equivalent), that allows it to produce as many U.S. dollars as it wishes at essentially no cost. By increasing the number of U.S. dollars in circulation, or even by credibly threatening to do so, the U.S. government can also reduce the value of a dollar in terms of goods and services, which is equivalent to raising the prices in dollars of those goods and services. We conclude that, under a paper-money system, a determined government can always generate higher spending and hence positive inflation.[6] So if the government is determined to create inflation, there should be hardly any doubt that there will be inflation. The Fed's series of rate cuts suggests that the bank tries to create additional credit and money via lowering the interest rate on base money. But if such action fails to yield inflation, it does not take much to expect that the central bank may take recourse to less "regular" operations, if and when such an inflation policy is deemed necessary to solve the credit crisis. So far, at least, US bank credit and money supply growth has remained at a very high level. In December 2007, banks' commercial and industrial loans grew at 10.9% y/y, and total bank loans and leases were up 10.8% y/y. Real estate loans — most likely as a consequence of the defaults in the subprime markets — slowed down somewhat, but were still running at 6.3% y/y. Against this background the Fed rate cuts should actually accelerate the erosion of the exchange value of money further. Threatening Freedom Inflation is a societal evil. It redistributes real wealth from creditors to debtors. It impairs the role of money as a means of exchange. The efficiency of the market's price mechanism is greatly reduced, encouraging bad decisions, which in turn harm peoples' economic well-being. At the end of the day, inflation is a serious threat to freedom. The majority of the people, suffering badly from inflation, would most likely blame the free market for their plight, rather than blame the central bank for the debasing of the currency. Print $17 Audio $25 Mises noted: Nothing harmed the cause of liberalism more than the almost regular return of feverish booms and of the dramatic breakdown of bull markets followed by lingering slumps. Public opinion has become convinced that such happenings are inevitable in the unhampered market economy. People did not conceive that what they lamented was the necessary outcome of policies directed toward a lowering of the rate of interest by means of credit expansion. They stubbornly kept to these policies and tried in vain to fight their undesired consequences by more and more government interference.[7] From the Austrian viewpoint, the current credit crisis appears to be a precursor of great inflation. If a deliberate policy of great inflation is chosen in the United States, a monetary policy of debasing the currency would most likely also take hold in other currency areas of the world. The credit crisis has become a threat to the free societal order: as people become dispirited with the free market order, the door would be pushed open for anti–free market policies. --------------------------------------...
