Need Solid Ideas for a Home-based Business? I'm looking for good ideas on what type of home-based business to start-up. I've was recently "laid off" but I have funds put aside. should i get a loan for my business? I can't disclose the intricacies of my business, what it does or the name, but i assure you it is 100% legal and follows all legal guidelines locally and federally.. it is NOT a MLM or other crap like that. it's a legitimate business in every sense of the word. given that, i need your opinion. our company is formed as an LLC and there are two principles, me and my business partner. I am thinking about taking out a loan for $20,000 to really get our business jump started. We've been in operation as a company for about a month and have already accumulated $13,141, however this is paid out to us over 14 months give or take, so basically, we're looking at roughly $1200 this month. Hardly enough to live on obviously. Each month that we do more sales, it just adds to our receivables pipeline. If we get the same amount of sales next month as we did this month, we'll get over 2k next month, then 3 the next month etc. the reason we're doing so poorly is because of the quality of the leads we're getting moreso than our performance and knowledge of the industry we're in. Fortunately, we have money to float us financially until things really take off. Here's the deal... if we get a loan for 20k, we'd pretty much have to spend all of it within 45 days to purchase a MUCH BETTER quality of leads which would allow us to make sales through a method we're not using currently. The average closing rate for this type of lead is 40% approximately. We are experienced enough to make and surpass that amount. But let's say we werent. You can NEVER expect to make the average, and obviously have to assume the worst right? But lets play with that number first. lets say we make 40% closing on these leads. If we do this, we'll make 22k THAT MONTH, which would give us 15k to put towards the next month's leads, leaving the other 5k to pay for our operational costs (which are minimal) and to put some money in our pockets for the month. we would make less the next month since we're not buying 20k worth of leads, but we'd make that same 20k the next month PLUS whatever we close the next month, which should be around 40k that month... so on and so forth, and we're looking at a million in May of '10 provided it's just us working and we don't expand and hire employees (which we will) that definitely sounds worth the 20k investment right? we could pay it off in full in 2 or 3 months feasibly. but... let's be realistic.. like i said, if someone says you can do something, expect about 1/4th of that, and do those numbers as a worst case scenario. With the 13k we have coming over 14 months, if we did the same amount of sales next month, we'll have 26k which will more than pay back that 20k loaned.. the interest will be about 5k at the 3rd year of the loan. we could pay it back over 14 months and have profit left over if we shut the doors and never did another sale.. so given that, let's look at what 10% closing would be. we would make about 8600 the next month from the 20k we invested putting us down 11500 (which is as much as what we already have coming to us over 14 months.... the total we'd have coming to us at that point would be over 95k over 14 months. we wouldn't have enough to put 20k towards buying those leads again the next month, and if we go back to what we were doing and making the same sales we've proven we can make with the leads we have, we'd make close o 19k revenue the next month, close to 30 the month after, which means we could buy more of those leads and explode again - feasibly hitting much better than 10% the next time around. regardless, no matter WHAT we do, or how poorly we do, we WILL make enough to pay back the loan, but..... i'm still scared..... that's a lot of money to borrow and though i know i'm 99.9% positive that we will be able to pay it back in no time at all, even if we do poorly, there's still a great deal of hesitation. i know that it could only do good for us. one of my bigger hesitations is that the loan has to be taken out in MY name. my partner doesn't have a good enough credit score to get a loan, and the loan we're approved for will not allow me to put his name on it. this means i can't technically make him liable for his portion however, i'm the majority owner of the company, and i am the primary name on the bank account, my girlfriend of 3 years is the accountant, etc.. the partner doesn't have access to the account, though technically, if he takes his ID, he could pull money from it directly. I could very easily stop all payments to that account and switch them to my personal account and collect any incoming revenue if he for some reason got flaky. However, if he was an asshole, he could pull whatever money is in there out and close the account, but couldn't change it to where he receives the future payments. Only i have the authority to stop the payments from going into that account. with all of that said, i have absolutely no worries that he would

Are all insurance companies basically MLM (Multi-Level Marketing)? Recently I got a call from someone claiming to be a "recruiter" from a national insurance chain. I was a little leery from the start, as she sounded like she was reading from a script (and not very well at that). Still, I looked up the job listing, decided to go to the "interview," but with a fair amount of skepticism. As expected, even before I met with the "recruiter," the promo video playing in the waiting room hit one of the high points: the phrase "grow your business." As the interview continued, the talking points of MLM kept coming up. "How much time and money are you prepared to invest in this?" "Are you ready to start building your book of clients?" After I asked a question about cold-call telemarketing, they even used the phrase "purchase leads." Is this the norm in the insurance industry, or is this just a bad company?

For an MLM to be legal, must an actual, real product be being sold? I know what a "gifting" scheme is, and also a pyramid, but multi-level marketing is (or can be) a legitimate business model -- but I am curious what defines the "product" that I believe it would be legally required to be selling. For example, I've seen many where what you buy is a very expensive set of books and tapes on self motivation and success, or a website to promote your business, or some other purchase that helps you duplicate the same effort that lead you to pay for it, so you can help others do the same thing...but that does NOT really relate to any other consumer use or purpose. Does this make it essentially a gifting matrix, but with a (greatly inflated) "product" being "sold"? And if so, I'm not saying I'm automatically opposed to that, but my question is: does that make it legal and acceptable? Thanks for any input... I got into a business that involves a product that I LOVE and I will be crushed if this doesn't work out. In the past I was not passionate about the products but this time I am. Has anyone worked for Bill & Diane Lampe / Lampe Companies? Has anyone worked for Bill & Diane Lampe / Lampe Companies / National Agents Alliance (NAA)? During the past several months, I have come across various ads from State Farm and Allstate insurance companies, offering opportunities to come work for them as Insurance Agents, with no experience, with offerings to even set you up in your own business, with your own office, at some future date upon you proving yourself. However upon doing a Google search about this, ex-Insurance Agents that have answered those ads and worked for either company have painted some tales of horror of what it was like for them to work for either company, where they ultimately ended up having to quit after working for several months. So upon reading what I read, I opted to skip trying my luck at either company. Now fast forward . . . while reading the Want Ads over the past two weeks, I have come across an insurance company (Lampe Companies), and they seem to have a few thousand online ads for “Health Insurance Sales Agents” in cities all over the nation that they have posted during the last 2 weeks alone. In their ads they state: “No cold calling because our lead program is so strong that we continually have too many direct mail and call in leads, and never enough agents. Agent and management opportunities immediately available across the country.” I can't imagine that as bad as our economy is, that people are making a beeline to buy insurance. Though it seems there are no up-front cost and they offer all kinds of free training, however it sounds too good to be true . . . especially when I have read the many horror stories (via a Google search) of those ex-Insurance Agents that worked for State Farm and Allstate, where both companies don’t tell you up front that you MUST HAVE good personal credit in order to work for them, then when you go to work for them as an agent, you will have to pay “x” amount of money per month for all of the expenses to work in an office (i.e. training, your desk, use of office equipment, etc.). Yet both companies push agents HARD to sell! sell! sell! So if you don’t make enough sells per month to at least cover your monthly expenses of working in their office (they could care less if you have no take home money as long as you pay your monthly office expenses), they will soon terminate you. Yet some of the former agents of those 2 companies said basically nobody is standing in line to buy insurance, so their managers pretty much told the agents to badger own their family and friends, in order to drum-up business. So I was wondering (if you have any affiliation with Bill & Diane Lampe / Lampe Companies) do you have to pay any money at any time to work for Bill & Diane Lampe / NAA company? If so, what is and how much are the extra stuff you have to pay for? Also is this company a MLM? Does their company actually sell insurance of any kind? Are there really that many leads, where this company needs to hire all of these new agents? Do they make your badger your family and friends to try to get new business? I could not find anything on their company via searching the Better Business Bureau website either, so it seems that they have no BBB file. Yet again, this company sounds too good to be true. Yet via doing a Google search, I could not find anything negative about Bill or Diane Lampe. In college I have studied business management, European politics, advertising, philosophy (four of these one year each), and performing arts communication (am in junior year, will be graduating with a bachelor's degree in communication next year). I failed my first four attempts at college not because of laziness or Iack of commitment; but because I made some ignorant choices in my personal lives that required a lot of cleanup, wrecked my relationship with my family, and compromised my mental health. In between I took a year off to take care of myself and make amends at home, got back into college, and gradually pursue the dream again. The dream has been in my heart practically all my life: I want to set up the first performing arts high school in my country that provides hard working, talented teenagers the opportunity to test the waters of professional showmanship within the safety of a responsible educational institute before they'll have to make up their minds if this is what they want to pursue in tertiary education (e.g. conservatoires or performing arts college) or for life. At some point in my life, I want this dream to actually come true, but I don't know yet where to start. I'm 24 and have been in college since 16 after accelerating two grades in high school, so my first go at university was a rushed decision. However, I always knew that I would want to own my own business one day (i.e. the school) and that I will need to know how to raise capital, sell the product (school programs), lead people, and sustain a long living organisation. Out of my five studies, the one that has the biggest impact on me was probably advertising, which helped me understand how brand development, corporate culture, corporate identity, publicity and image work as part of a company's marketing strategy. I did well in advertising but had to leave to take care of my personal issues. Initially I chose it was because I was too chicken to audition for music school (I had stopped playing music for about 3 years then, I'd probably flunk anyway), but it's creative and based on the business principles I have encountered in a previous study. My current study, PA, has been the most stable, but the program sucks. The campus is originally a PR school that happens to be attended by a number of local celebrities; so they made a communication program tailor made for students intending to pursue a career in showbiz. We ended up getting raw public relations material with odd classes like anthropology, law, and telecommunication technology, with two supplementary art classes per semester. I don't mind the academic subjects, but am alarmed at the lack of theory basis, technique drilling, and emphasis of dedicated showmanship in these classes. We don't even get to choose what kind of performing arts we intend to specialise in, we just get some singing classes and some acting classes but they're basically just throwing the baby in the bath water. So I can sing a bit, act a bit, dance a bit, write scripts, direct, and produce a production satisfactorily, but I can do none of these at a professional level. The reason why I didn't take education major was because I'm not interested in being a classroom teacher. My goal is to raise the capital to start this school, establish a particular brand of education with a distinctive corporate culture, and lead and train the decision makers to run the business responsibly. However, considering that I will need to know the principles of setting up curricula and methods of approaching students to bring out the best of them, I am willing to consider pursuing a master's degree in education. When it comes to work experience, I have had many jobs but not been able to keep them. My longest job was selling skin care products and recruiting people for an MLM company; I lasted 2 years but can't call that a career. Other than that I have worked mostly doing on and off translation projects, and briefly worked in a clothing shop and as an MC for concerts and corporate events. Now that my musical skills have died, my remaining best gifts remaining would be languages (I'm trilingual), public speaking, fusion cooking, leadership, strategizing, and writing... but I have no formal training in any of these and (except for languages and writing) have barely used them in professional settings. I've considered to start working in TV broadcast or an advertising consultancy... they can always use some creative entertainment and I need to make money anyway, but so far my attempts to get into the industry have not been successful. Furthermore, at this point I just can't see it yet drawing me closer to my later goal of founding a performing arts school. I just don't want to make another bad decision I'd regret later in life. A prospective employer once told me that I know what I want, but currently do not have what it takes to get what I want. He's right, but my life has only just begun and I can do someth I can do something to change that if I could just map out where I want to go, learn, work, and consistently dedicate myself to it. I don't believe that my dream is impossible, but it will require breaking down into realistic baby steps I can rationally work on now, and constantly following up and revising strategies to get there. What I'm wondering is... how do people get into the education business? What did successful private school founders do when they were young? What kind of people did they hang around, and what kind of books did they read? Why did they have a passion for setting up this school? With the kind of education, work experience, and skills I have, what are some valuable things I can use to get closer to the dream? Has anyone worked for Bill & Diane Lampe / Lampe Companies? Has anyone worked for Bill & Diane Lampe / Lampe Companies / National Agents Alliance (NAA)? During the past several months, I have come across various ads from State Farm and Allstate insurance companies, offering opportunities to come work for them as Insurance Agents, with no experience, with offerings to even set you up in your own business, with your own office, at some future date upon you proving yourself. However upon doing a Google search about this, ex-Insurance Agents that have answered those ads and worked for either company have painted some tales of horror of what it was like for them to work for either company, where they ultimately ended up having to quit after working for several months. So upon reading what I read, I opted to skip trying my luck at either company. Now fast forward . . . while reading the Want Ads over the past two weeks, I have come across an insurance company (Lampe Companies), and they seem to have a few thousand online ads for “Health Insurance Sales Agents” in cities all over the nation that they have posted during the last 2 weeks alone. In their ads they state: “No cold calling because our lead program is so strong that we continually have too many direct mail and call in leads, and never enough agents. Agent and management opportunities immediately available across the country.” I can't imagine that as bad as our economy is, that people are making a beeline to buy insurance. Though it seems there are no up-front cost and they offer all kinds of free training, however it sounds too good to be true . . . especially when I have read the many horror stories (via a Google search) of those ex-Insurance Agents that worked for State Farm and Allstate, where both companies don’t tell you up front that you MUST HAVE good personal credit in order to work for them, then when you go to work for them as an agent, you will have to pay “x” amount of money per month for all of the expenses to work in an office (i.e. training, your desk, use of office equipment, etc.). Yet both companies push agents HARD to sell! sell! sell! So if you don’t make enough sells per month to at least cover your monthly expenses of working in their office (they could care less if you have no take home money as long as you pay your monthly office expenses), they will soon terminate you. Yet some of the former agents of those 2 companies said basically nobody is standing in line to buy insurance, so their managers pretty much told the agents to badger own their family and friends, in order to drum-up business. So I was wondering (if you have any affiliation with Bill & Diane Lampe / Lampe Companies) do you have to pay any money at any time to work for Bill & Diane Lampe / NAA company? If so, what is and how much are the extra stuff you have to pay for? Also is this company a MLM? Does their company actually sell insurance of any kind? Are there really that many leads, where this company needs to hire all of these new agents? Do they make your badger your family and friends to try to get new business? I could not find anything on their company via searching the Better Business Bureau website either, so it seems that they have no BBB file. Yet again, this company sounds too good to be true.
