Are original marketing ideas able to be protected?

I have a never before used method of guerrilla marketing that I wish to protect from being copied. From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerilla_marketing "It is up to the guerrilla marketer to be creative and devise unconventional methods of promotion. The marketer must use all of his or her contacts, both professional and personal, and must examine his company and its products, looking for sources of publicity. Many forms of publicity can be very inexpensive, others are free." What can I do to protect my methodology from copying?

  1. Not a lot I am afraid. The best thing you can do is take the "1st to the market" initative. You can do this by: 1) Acting quickly 2) Introducing legal barriers to prevent copying 3) Be very successful, very quickly Examples of this are MySpace - which came to success very quickly, there are many copiers but few as successful. Good luck
  2. If you've thought of it, it is possible that others have as well. Just go for it and see what happens, be there first.
  3. Not much can be done to protect a marketing method. Even if you could, IMHO it's hard to make a lot of money selling a methodology that is "very inexpensive" or "free." just my 2 cents.
