What are arguments against a school voucher system?

I love this idea. Free market schools. Teachers will begin to get paid for performance, and it lets the state off the hook for deciding what that is. It also allows for creative education techniques to flourish. Efficiency in the market of education will become the norm. I understand transition would be difficult, but is that reason enough?

  1. The biggest argument I can think of (not that I agree), is that some would call it an excuse NOT to keep church and state separated -- most assuredly many people, probably not even a majority, though, would choose to send their children to parochial (religious) schools. There would be a huge outcry against using tax dollars (state) for a religious education.
  2. It was about time that teachers should be recognized for their permanent preparation and skills!
  3. The danger of the voucher system lies in the fact that vouchers are still government money collected by taxes. Any time schools accept payment from money collected by the government, those schools are subject to certain regulations. The U. S. Supreme court has ruled, for instance, that colleges that have students paying tuition with federal loans have to abide by government regulations. This would make private schools virtually indistinguishable from public schools. If you do not want government interference, vouchers will not work.
