  1. I work in an old boys company myself. One reason they would rather hire relatives because its a "perk" to keep their current top employees. Lets say a manager who makes $125,000 per year can work for any one of 1000 companies. One company offers him a use of the corporporate jet. Another company offers an apartment in NYC that he can use when in NY on business. The other is a Midwest company, they are likely smaller, have no corporate jet and don't even do business in NY. They will hire his son to an entry level network security job. He of course takes the last one of the 3. At the lower levels of the company many candidates apply and they are easy to replace, at the top level, especially in old boy companies its hard to attract and replace top personnel. So its not because they want to higher the bosses son, its because they don't want the boss to leave. And it is an appriciation of individual merit, the hirer's merit as opposed to the hiree's.
