How is Honolulu to live?

I'm considering moving back to Hawaii later this year, after being on the East coast this year. I'm a musician (acoustic rock. myspace.com/johnnydominic... and also a entrepreneur. I worry Hawaii would be too limited for music and business ownership (particularly network marketing) Anyways, all ideas and advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

  1. I really liked my time living in Hawaii. The people are great, the weather is great, and good food. Not sure about being a musician out there. But I say if you are an entrepreneur go out there and see what you can do. Hawaii has one of the lowest unemployment %s in the US. So if you cant get that going you can get a job working on the beach or something.
  2. Hawaii is only good for vacations, living there should only be considered only if your retired. Your right about Hawaii being "too limited for music & business ownership", there's not as much opportunities on the island vs. Mainland (East Coast). I'm sure you know what I mean.
  3. It's still expensive and thousands of miles from anywhere, and the traffic and housing costs are much worse now on Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii. All but the most successful musicians still have to have day jobs. Rock is still one of the least popular genres. Reggae and more traditional Hawaiian music are the most popular. In the next tier you probably have oldies, hip-hop, and country. I think rock is still more popular than Beijing opera, but maybe not more popular than classical. I went to an 8th grade dance last year where the girls would only dance to hip-hop and the boys would only dance to reggae! Last week, the Molokai Ranch, Aloha Air, and ATA (a carrier with frequent flights to and from Hawaii) all ceased operations, signs that do not bode well for the future of the local economy.
