are laser pointers legal to use out in the public?

If I buy a laser pointer and start randomly pointing the laser at people outside in the public, am I committing a crime? I'm just curious because back in elementary school, I remember seeing kids do it all the time. They would get some cheap laser pointer from the flee market. Is it legal to do that? I mean if your laser is striong enough..the laser can literally reach far distances...i rather not say any ideas..I chould get in trouble for that but yeahh is it legal to do so?

2. Let's put it this way...a guy was arrested for pointing a laser pointer at airplanes as they took off or landed. Some pilots were affected. I don't know if he is still in jail or not. I would suggest growing up, and getting stupid ideas out of your head, since a laser can burn the retina, thus blinding somebody. Would you like your vision robbed of you by some idiot?
3. i don't think so. some construction company's use them under close supervision. don't ever point one at a aeroplane, or you butt will be grass. pilots done like them.
4. as far as i know it is not illegal topoint lasers at someone, but I have heard of people getting hurt due to it. I also heard that someone caused a plane to crash by shining it up and it whent into the pilots eye.
5. people will think there is a sniper targeting them.they will call police.you go to jail.
