CECT "HIPHONE" A88 works on AT&T network in California?

Have just received a CECT A88 which is supposed to be quad band (850 mhz for Calif AT&T.) AT&T store techs believe I need a software/firmware conversion for the US market, as the phone will not recognize my SIM. Anyone have experience and/or knowledge on this subject...or know where I should look online? Thanks for your help-

1. no, it is tri-band (even though ebay sellers say it is quad)... the P188i, digitalrise l800i and d990i sciphone are quad band... that model hiphone is only tri-band. would ask seller to exchange for quad band phone.
