What do Republicans and Sen. McCain think about government bailouts?
This is an exact quote from the Republican Party's platform, adopted just three weeks ago in St. Paul: "We do not support government bailouts of private institutions. Government interference in the markets exacerbates problems in the marketplace and causes the free market to take longer to correct itself. We believe in the free market as the best tool to sustained prosperity and opportunity for all." How would you square this statement with what is going on the past week or two in Washington, including Sen. McCain's acquiescence that some sort of government intervention is needed? Maybe party platforms are just an exercise to give delegates something to do? http://www.gop.com/2008Platform/Economy.htm @seahag: I hadn't thought of it that way. Your math is not quite right -- $700 billion divided into about 300 million people is about $2333 per person. But that's a novel and brilliant idea. Much better than trying to save failed companies. Send the checks!

- grade A bullshit Republicans are the cause of bail outs Pro business republicans dont enforce antitrust and anti fraud laws, which ends up bad for the companies who decide to invest other people's money.
- Heres the simple way out of this mess seeing the U.S has less than 400 million people the government should just give them 1 million each and they can bail themselves out of the mess the government got us into saving 300 million! And it would also stimulate the economy!
- yeah, and these are the hypocritical jerks who have been in power for 8 years. pretty much every republican policy, foreign or domestic, has turned into a disaster. funny, but my entire lifetime, the GOP has talked about welfare being a "handout", they talk about "self sufficiency" and all that crap, but they help write a near trillion dollar check to bail out banks?
- I am a republican, I think that any time Dems and Reps hold hands is when they are both in the cookie jar at the same time. Something smells funky here. I think in time both parties are going to be exposed for having at least one or two bad bushels of apples. This is the pre Palin spring cleaning.. Both parties fear accountability to whistle blowers. That said Obama is more likely to appease the powers that be then Mccain/Palin. In my opinion it looks like a half hearted last ditch effort to fleece the tax payers before "the chickens come home to roost" so to speak. Who do they think they are fooling? They are birds of the same feather. HAHAHAHA LOL.
