Phones Unlocked, what do they mean?

What do they mean by this phraze? I've seen it at lots of market stalls and small shops. Is it stolen phones that the're unlocking or is it for people who want to change to a different network?

  1. Certain brands/mobile providers lock mobiles to prevent the customer using other networks or using other sims. if you get it unlocked you can use any sim hope this helps x
  2. It's for people who want to change networks from their current provider to a new one. They do not deal in stolen phones.
  3. Be aware that unlocked phones do use any sim less 3G sim cards, unless you have a quad band phone then you can use any sim card without restrictions. e.g. if a dual band or triband unlocked phone, will not take in any sim card e.g. won't take in a 3G one. I prefer to have an unlocked phone which is quad band rather than a triband or dual as won't take in any sim cards. You can get an unlocked phone from any mobile provider, some come already priced as it is, others you have to pay more to fully unlock it. If you buy the mobile phone is not stolen isn't it? Shops don't do stolen phones, is always brand new phones. Is just a bit stupid to think that shops do unlocking onto stolen phones, as you can buy unlocked phones in any mobile phone shop - anywhere. Just go out and inform yourself in case of doubts! If you use different sims and go abroad plus, you don't like wasting money buying another sim or mobile phone. For that, the best is having a quad band unlocked phone which will work anywhere. P.S. - You can get a quad band unlocked phone from £40 - £100, depends where you buy and how much you are willing to spend on pay as you go. On contract phones, it may vary depending on your contract.
  4. Most networks, when you buy a new phone it will be 'locked' on that network. e.g. This means that you can only use 02 sims if you bought it from 02. They unlock phones so the phone can be used on all networks e.g. a phone bought from 02 unlocked to orange hope this helps.
  5. No they wouldnt be allowed to do that as its illegal to unlock or even fix a stolen phone, they unlock phoned for people that want to switch networks like from 02 to orange.
