VPN in to home network for secure access at public wifi?

what i would like to do a version of hotspot shield because i don't want to have to view adds on every page also their software has started to play up. i know that openVPN is out there but the user guide seams to be aimed at the 'nix market (why cant people do 2 user guides 'nix and windowz all help and advice is welcome
