How's the legal market in Philly? Best places for a young lawyer to live?
I'm graduating law school in May, and my husband and I are considering moving to Philly. He's from there, but I'm from New York. We have friends and family in the area, and the housing is way more affordable than Manhattan. Does anyone know how the legal market is in Philly? And what areas of the city are recommended - for a young couple who don't have much money to throw around (gotta pay those loans!). I'd appreciate any info you can give me!

- My cousin, a doctor, married a doctor, and they both moved to Philly for his residency. I don't know about the legal market, but they moved to a place around Ardmore on the Main Line. Very nice there, and near to the train. They like it a lot. You DON'T want to have to travel the Schuylkill Expressway (the locals call it the SureKill Exp.) everyday. But your husband should know that. Do whatever you can to avoid that drive.
- I'm graduating, too, and from looking for jobs I'd say you're better off in NY. The economy of the NATION is down right now, so that affects job opportunities everywhere. However, NYc and CA are the only places I've looked at jobs where I keep seeing tons of ads for lawyers (and I'm looking at approximately 10 major cities just because the two areas that are my first choices seem to have very little and I feel I don't have the luxury anymore to be picky about location)...most other places, there are a lot less ads but so many 3Ls and lawyers who are out of work trying to find jobs. I haven't looked at Philadelphia, though, so what I advise you to do is go to the Philadelphia Craigslist and look at the amount of ads legal employers are placing there under the legal/paralegal section. In addition, you can go online to see if there are any Philadelphia newspapers that allow you to view their classified ads online. Still, I really do think NY will be a lot better for you. Craigslist also has forums for each city and I think also for each/most careers, so you'd probably do better to ask this question there. Good luck.
