Is it legal for my work to make me drive my personal vehicle for their marketing purposes?

I work at a restaurant I get paid min wage..but i am required to drive to 6-9 different places and do their marketing..I am required to drive my personal vehicle for minimum wage so its not even profitable for me....Are there any laws governing anything like this? i am a server and a trainer there so its not my job title or duty to do their marketing.

  1. No they should be paying you for travel, that should be part of your pay. If not , leave, its just minimum wage.
  2. It's not illegal, but it's one heck of a tax break for you. Keep track of your mileage - I believe the deduction is $0.55/mile now.
  3. They are required to compensate you for your gas and upkeep,,check with the state laws
  4. it shouldnt be legal for them to do that especially if they aren't paying for gas with the cost of gas these days
  5. No. If your job requires you to drive your personal vehicle for work related duties, you can use it as a tax deduction, but I can virtually assure you that you won't make enough or have enough to deduct. My advice is to find another job.
  6. The law that is most effective in this case is the law of supply and demand. REFUSE to drive your vehicle unless they reimburse you for mileage. If no one allows them to get away with it, they will start behaving. As long as employees put up with their behavior, all the laws in the world won't help.
  7. No. If you agree then it is not. It should be in your job description though. That is where the legal part comes in. If they did not disclose to you that you would be driving then you can call the labor board of your state. Also, in California, where I live, employers have to pay .505% of all the miles driven for work. Not driving to and from work though. That is all , not even upkeep on you car. Find out what the law is in your state.
  8. Depends; which country you live in and what contract you have agreed to. Industrial laws are different State to State as well in some countries
  9. Yes, it is legal. BUT, they must either reimburse you according to state and federal mileage OR pay you for the time you spend driving. Yes, there are federal laws that control this, even if your state has no such laws. If your state has laws about it, they give you even more protection than the federal laws do.
