Do I need a tax id number for affiliate marketing?
I'm thinking about getting into affiliate marketing but, I'm trying to do some homework first. Do I need a state/federal tax id number just to refer sales leads? (There is commission on sales/sign-ups from my leads)

- Only if your business structure is a corporation, LLC or partnership. If you are a sole proprietor, you don't need to get a Tax ID as your SSN will suffice Read IRS Do You Need an EIN? http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=97872,00.html
- Yes, but if you are a sole proprietor, your Social Security Number is your Tax ID. Start out as a sole proprietor. If you start seeing a good profit you can incorporate and get a business tax id.

- no not really... if you do not have a LLC or other type of business you may use your social security number... BUT keep in mind that you will be paying more taxes. good luck
- This depends on whether the affiliate program asks you that information in order to pay you your commission or not, but it is not mandatory for signing up for any affiliate program online. Some do, some don't, but the only way to find out would be to join a program and review its payout policy.
