Do you think that Verizon's cell phone business model will lead them into trouble?

With the hugely popular Apple iPhone and now Google getting into the cell phone market, Verizon's stronghold on cell service could be seeing some trouble because of their business model. They want you to pay for everything, every application on your phone, every kilobyte of data transferred, all of it. And yet, the iPhone and Google phones are largely successful due to their free applications. Look at what Apple does. They have opened up their development kits for anyone to make their own application and host it for download. Many are free, but most are still paid, and this works great. I think that Verizon will need to shift their plans and allow more freedom to their users. Otherwise, they will get hurt badly by the future software developments in cell phone technology.

  1. Have you read up on verizons purchase of the 700 MHz spectrum? You should. It goes into detail about this.
  2. I hate to say it, but I think Verizon is headed on the same path that T-Mobile and AT&T are following. More and more of their phones are "World Edition", making them compatable on GSM bands. Almost all their new smartphones now have Wi-Fi. Their recent aquisition of Alltel makes them the biggest wireless subscriber in the country. The Alltel aquisition also gives them the most coverage. Another thing- they're owned by Vodafone, and have the best customer support program, according to J.D. Power & Associates. Those are pretty big names to have behind you... Verizon's phones also support unique (to the operating systems), or will support unique App Stores, like the iPhone's. I don't see what's the fuss with the iPhone. Last I heard, Verizon's 4G network will be based on GSM. They won't be going ANYWHERE for a looooong time, buddy....
  3. In response to the J.D. Powers... they won 1 award for 2008 T-Mobile won back the award for 2009 making 8 total. Their customer service isn't comparable
