What are the best places to post affiliate links?

So basically, im trying to promote someones product, i have no idea how to do this since im a complete newbie at affiliate marketing. Anyone got some FREE tips, and FREE info on where to place my affiliate links? Thanks :)

1. Hi Joe, first don't send traffic directly to your affliate link try to send them first to your optin site, capture their name and email and then redirect them to the affiliate site.
