Obama's healthcare plan?
Every time I refer to Obama's healthcare plan as socialist, liberals become very defensive. Could someone explain to me (intelligently) how his healthcare plan is not a socialist idea but instead something different? Socialism is the nationalization of services The dictionary defines it as - a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole So tell me how Obama's ideas to bring healthcare under government control is not socialism...by definition, if its run by the government and not part of the free market, its socialist. There are programs in which society benefits as a whole by placing in government control (roads, education, military and law enforcement for example). The reason being, if these were privately held they could be very detrimental to our country. There are other programs that need to remain out of government control and left to the free market to control. So how is Obama's "government healthcare" plan not simply another way to say "socialist healthcare" plan? You can put lipstick on a pig and its still a pig...you can call it government healthcare if you want, its still socialism. Eve: God I love your posts! I have read his plan and it sounds all good and wonderful. But here is the bottom line, how does he plan to keep this government program from becoming just like 1/5 of all government programs? A wasteful, corrupt, unmanaged system that does more harm than good. “Many on the Left argue that other countries have better health care systems with more government involvement. My challenge to the Left is this: see if you can get Medicare and Medicaid to work as well as you believe the French system works or the Canadian system works or whichever you think we ought to be striving for. Only then should you reach for additional government responsibility.” http://econlog.econlib.org/authorakling.html

- Read all about it at http://www.barackobama.com/issues/healthcare/ Read about ALL his policies at: http://barackobama.com/issues You are nowhere even close with the information you present. There's the truth above, read it or go suck lemons.
- you are right. i do not want to have a civil servant as my doctor.
- They get defensive because you are right.
- I'll keep it simple so you can understand. Obama is proposing a FEE BASED program that people can BUY into. Its not a give away. The destitute among us don't need a new free health care program...they already have free health care. There are millions who have jobs that don't provide health care OR the plans are TOO expensive for them to purchase. For example, a small business owner might not be able to cover their family because they don't get the benefit of volume purchasing and the plans are incredibly expensive. That's why McCain's alternative is ridiculous. His tax break wouldn't begin to cover health care for most families.
- I agree with you.
- Obama's health care plan uses private insurance paying for private doctors. That's why your accusation is false.
- you are so right !!!!! careful your saying something bad about obamas judgement you will be deleted lol
- He wants to take money from the wealthier to GIVE healthcare to everyone else. He wants government control over our doctors and most people don't really want that. We want to choose who we go to.
- Believe it or not, Mr Repubelican, there are hard-working people out there who simply can't afford health care for their family. Not everyone is out to cheat the system.
- Just ask a Canadian about their healthcare. That's why they keep coming across the border to see doctors in the good Ol' USA. Obama's plan in socialism.
- Unversal Health at first hand sounds wonderful for the 48 million uninsured American's but it would destroy our health care as we know it..sad but YES it is a Socialist Plan ..like the failing Social Security and failing Medicare and Medicaid..so sad..it will make for poor health
- You hit the nail on the head...socialism is the change he's been talking about all these months.
- Why we have a socialist firefighter system, police force, mail, library system but not healthcare??? This country is sick because we make profit off the sick and ailing!!! Did Jesus walk around healing everyone and charging them for it??? HELL NO! How could we be the "most powerful and richest country" and yet we treat the sick like crap?!?!? Social medicine is NOT the worst idea.....10-12 billion dollars of taxpayers money is going to a senseless war and that money could be spent on giving children healthcare! Give me a break!
- Good luck on getting an answer that makes sense. It won't work. It hasn't in any country where it's been in place. It only works for that part of the population that never needs to go to the doctor. The rest get screwed.
- I have no refute to your statements as they're all true. We fought for our independence so we could each write our own success stories in life. The government should not be responsible for ensuring we have healthcare (or for that matter, that we have food, shelter, retirement income, or education). It should be up to us and our success dependent on our own personal abilities and drive.
- I call it quasi-socialist. It will retain private insurance, but will allow people to buy into a government insurance program. Subsidies will be given to those who can't afford it. Healthcare itself (doctors offices, hospitals, etc.) will remain private. So in effect what we'll have is a partial nationalization of the health insurance industry. As we can see, the partial nationalization of the mortgage industry (by establishing Fannie & Freddie with implicit gov't guarantees) was a great success...
- It is socialism and you are right. I eventually had to come to terms with Democrats, liberals or whatever you want to call them that they don't know any better. Can't fault them for that. If they want to vote for someone like that let them. That doesn't mean he will win. Socialism is all about control. That is all Obama wants. He wants to control everything and everyone and be popular and have everyone look up to him. That's it.
- "National Health Insurance Exchange: The Obama plan will create a National Health Insurance Exchange to help individuals who wish to purchase a private insurance plan. The Exchange will act as a watchdog group and help reform the private insurance market by creating rules and standards for participating insurance plans to ensure fairness and to make individual coverage more affordable and accessible. Insurers would have to issue every applicant a policy, and charge fair and stable premiums that will not depend upon health status. The Exchange will require that all the plans offered are at least as generous as the new public plan and have the same standards for quality and efficiency. The Exchange would evaluate plans and make the differences among the plans, including cost of services, public." A "Watch Dog Group" forcing companies to offer some kind of minimum plan? This is socialism people! It's the government forcing private businesses to change their practices, policies and forcing them to do what the government sees fit. It's NOT a good thing! And anyone who thinks that a plan like this won't cause taxes and costs to go up for ALL of us is nuts! I really think the best solution would be government sponsored health care savings accounts. Those with or with out insurance, could choose to have a portion of their paycheck, pretax, placed into a medical savings account to be used for any medical expenses they need. There could be a limit on how much you could contribute over one year biased on family size etc. This way, those without insurance have money to pay for medical care, and those with would have supplemental funds to pay deductibles and co-payment, anything their insurance does not pay. It would still be a choice, and would not force insurance companies to fit into the governments idea of "fair".
- Left to the free market? What did the free markets and Republicans get us over the last few years: Massive beef recalls Lead tainted toys Poison pet food Poison drugs-Vioxx Bogus mortgages and a housing meltdown Salmonella tainted tomatoes and jalapenos Bush cut the education budget also Since everyone is making this grand distinction between Republicans and Democrats out of curiosity what is the monetary or just plain difference between a social or education program like a library versus corporate handouts like the $50 BILLION the automakers are looking for and the billions more needed for Bear Sterns, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae? Hey $60 billion will get every American a $200 physical or just $10 BILLION more than the automakers want. Funny how Toyota and Honda don't have these problems. It's not all union related either. Palin's husband is a union member btw. Obama's plan is a fee based setup like one of the other participants said using private doctors. And as a far as a free market is concerned think about Vioxx or the beef recalls. If Palin has her way as she said at the RNC "Let government get out of the way of business" and that kind of McCain/Palin free market we'lll need all the health insurance we can get. Especially with the radiation poisoning from the waste of 45 nuclear reactors. I'm not a big fan of that kind of "Nuclear Family Values"
- First you need to understand how socialized medicine really works. If you want to know what socialized medicine looks like, you should really watch Michael Moore's movie, SICKO. Whether you like Moore or not, it explains socialized medicine very well. In order to have socialized medicine in this country, we would have to do away with the insurance companies altogether and have a health care system bought and paid for by the government. The hospitals would be state or federally run institutions just like the post office, the police and fire departments, or the public schools. When you got sick or were hurt in an accident you would simply go to the doctor's office or hospital. They would treat you and tell you to either get well soon and come back as your condition requires. That would be it--no hospital bills, no doctor bills, no insurance forms to fill out. The staff and physicians that work in these hospitals would be government employees, and the cost of your care would be paid for by the government. You in turn would pay for government run health care through your taxes. That is not the system that Obama is proposing. His plan says, "If you like the health care coverage you have now through your employer, that's okay, you can keep it. If you're unhappy with your current coverage or if you don't have coverage, you can purchase the same health care coverage that members of Congress enjoy." He adds that he would make both available at a lower cost, and he would make it impossible for the insurance companies to exclude you due to pre-existing or chronic illnesses. Mental health would also be a requirement. Nowhere in his plan does he advocate eliminating the insurance companies or co-pays or private physicians and hospitals. I'm not going to go into McCain's "health care plan" here. You can find it on his official web site, or you can look back at some of my Q & A's regarding this. I do want to say here, though, that with our current health care system, we have third parties, namely the insurance companies, getting rich off of other people's misery. You pay a monthly premium, and as long as you remain healthy, they're raking in the dough. If you break your arm, they will decide how it's diagnosed and treated. They allow the doctor to perform the least expensive, least conclusive tests first. They approve the cheapest medications first. They can deny you an adequate treatment regimen because they're footing the bill. The doctor has to get everything pre-approved, whether it's physical therapy or an MRI. The insurance companies make money by not spending money on you. But I'm rambling now, just watch SICKO. Oh, one other thing. McCain has an ad out saying that Obama's plan would have a bureaucrat deciding on what health care is right for you. We already do. It's the insurance companies, and McCain doesn't plan to do away with them either.
- For millions of Americans who cannot afford health care it is better than nothing Bush and the Republicans offer.
- I agree with you and take it even further. we should illiminate other socialist programs like the U.S. Post Office, the sanitation department, the police department, The fire department, FEMA and other drug, health, food and safety departments. Even the military should be contracted to the highest bidders. All this departments should be privatized. Heh also if female want to abort, let them the least amount of people we have the higher our GDP per capita will be. We should be concern with making the highest profit with out the constraint and concern of human wealth fare. I say if you can't live stop breathing, because oxygen is not free buddy.
- i'm not all up on politics, but i read the first link that EVE had...to me it sounds like a fanciful idea that won't actually get done...based on the definition you provided and basically what Obama proposed...i don't really see how the healthcare could be anything but socialism...
- Click the links and find out. The simple fact is that he is not proposing universal healthcare. Only Nader is doing so.
