what are email exchanges in relation to affiliate marketing?

I have someone who is wanting to write an article on this for them... and I have no idea what an "email exchange" is in relation to affiliate marketing. He says it is similar to traffic exchanges, but just email... The emails are in your inbox daily and they come from a website... but how in the world can this be incorporated into an article that relates it to affiliate marketing? I am so confused, please, can someone who is familiar with this type of thing shed some light? Thanks so much.. I am sooo lost right now.. :(

1. Well you can write about how email exchanges can drive traffic to your site. For email exchanges, you have a list of people that are in tha exchange that you can send your ads to. And if they want to get credit they would have to open your email and click the link given to them so that they could earn credits. By clicking the link they will be taken to your site and they will have to stay there for a set amount of time usually 20 seconds to get their credits. And could possibly make them a customer.
