Adoptaclassroom.org is a well respected non profit organization that accepts cash donations in the name of a specific teacher or classroom who in turn purchase school supplies through an online network of vendors. Everything from crayons to computers are available for purchase and the organization is paid by the vendors so 100% of money donated is utilized. My idea is to open a consignment shop where parents drop off their kids outgrown clothing, toys, and gear along with the name of their child's teacher, and a majority percentage of the proceeds is funnelled through adopt-a-classroom to benefit the donor's child's classroom directly. I figure it's a win win win win win! Parents can donate generously to their childs individual classroom without writing a check, teachers can obtain desperately needed supplies without spending their own money, parents can get great deals on gently used items, kids get better tools for learning, and I make a reasonable living! Also, adopt-a-classroom provides detailed spending reports so parents can see exactly where their money went. No more sending donations into the abyss hoping it gets into the right hands. Would you shop here? Donate here? Of course, I have big dreams of this sweeping the nation! I'm picturing the school boards getting involved with collections of items and backpack advertising. Obviously I'm excited but I don't want to fall on my face and waste my life's savings on a business that will fail so I need to know what everyone thinks. Also, if there are any business owners out there, please offer advice on marketing, taxes, policies, etc. I want to do everything right and hope to open with the start of the school year. Thanks!
