newbie to seo and websites?

hi, i am in the process of getting my website up and running, just fine tuning and testing it at the moment. i am fairly new to websites so online marketing is a bit of a minefield. i am planning on getting the site submitted to all the major search engines etc, setting up a site map too so the site can be indexed as its not a flash site. i have googled seo and to be honest its a little confusing. lots of companies and software that can help but at the moment i have a rather limited budget due to the website project going over budget and into what monies i had allowed for marketing. has anyone any suggestions for seo i can do myself on as little as possible budget to start things off? obviously when the site starts to generate money then that marketing budget can be increased but for now rather than sit back doing nothing waiting for the funds to build up i want to start on the road to getting the site marketed. any tips or ideas? i have seen the seo software but is it better to use that than submitting the site yourself? whats backlinking? how do i go about that? or is there a site i can go to that explains all this in plain english to me? sorry for too many questions but i am abit of a novice here with the seo thing. thanks in advance

  1. content is king, you have heaps of content you will go far, thats the best advice i can give, you can go submitting to search engines like crazy but its not as effective as actually getting out there and posting your link all over the place, look up relevant sites to your topic on your website (forums, blogs, ezines, etc) and go comment crazy. Pick the high traffic sites of course (alexa will tell you that). Just posts losts of comments here and there like "oh that post was really imformative, well i have a site (your link here) that has a different perspective on that topic, you should check it out" Search engines will pick up your link on those high traffic sites regardless of if you submit it or not, but i suppose submitting wouldn't hurt, just make sure you have a friendly site map and relevant meta tags for keywords and stuff... how to do that well when you find out tell me too haha.

  4. Read this article on "What you should know about seo" http://www.spacenetmedia.com/seo-what-you-should-know--17.html that should help explain alot. It's all about the content and link building so try submitting to blogs and forums, etc.. anywhere to get links back to your site.
  5. Try and get high value recipricol links (say youre a flower shop from flower growers/farmers to markets etc) better quality is better than lots links (so ignore those post here and youlle be no on google), as you get more traffic to your site you will get higer rankings so look on it as developing rather than getting high overnight, aslong as youre getting some good traffic that helps, there is no real magic bullet, good website, well coded with good keywords etc all helps, good luck
  6. The best free way to promote a website is a natural build up of one-way back-links. If you can write 450-word articles, you can get 60 back-links for each article from blogs related to your niche. It will depend on how fast you submit articles. A forex site using this system took 4 months to be #1 on page 1 of Google.
  7. For SEO all you need is know how. It will take you time to get good at it but there are a lot of free resources on the internet to get you started Some basics of on page SEO at http://www.affiliatemarketingintro.com/on-page-search-engine-optimization.html And to get you started on backlinks http://www.affiliatemarketingintro.com/Search-Engine-Optimization-Backlinks.html But all you really need is to join some good forums on search engine optimization and read the stickies. That helped me a lot Just do a google search for SEO forums and a few will pop up

  9. There was a recently launched SEO software that is tailored to people with a small budget. The software creates relevant and specific tasks to complete that will establish backlinks to you website, which essentially increases your online visibility. The software doesn't complete the tasks for you, it just provides resources for attaining links which drive visitors to your site.
