What is your opinion on Immigration Reform being good for America’s security?
Why do some groups push against bills that can make our country safer? Do they think Immigration Reform is only Amnesty? ==================================== For America’s Security The immigration system we have today makes little sense in terms of America’s security. With few legal options to come in through the system, many seek ways to go around it. The broken system has spawned a thriving market for smugglers and has generated chaos on the border. A seemingly random enforcement regime targets ordinary immigrant workers and families, diverting resources away from protecting against genuine threats. Millions of immigrants are unknown to the government. Unscrupulous employers have little fear of punishment for recruiting and exploiting undocumented workers and undermining their honest competitors. Immigration reform will allow more immigrants to come with a visa, not with a smuggler. It will require undocumented immigrants to get right with the law, register with the government, and go through government background security checks. This screening process will separate ordinary immigrants who have come seeking opportunities to better their lives from those who may be exploiting opportunities a broken system provides to those who may be coming to do us harm. Enforcement resources can then be trained on employers who flaunt labor laws and exploit undocumented immigrants, on smugglers who traffic in drugs and guns who are creating chaos on the border, and on violent individuals inside the country who may pose a threat to public safety. By getting ordinary immigrants in line for citizenship and prioritizing enforcement actions to target genuine threats, immigration reform will be good for America’s security. http://reformimmigrationforamerica.org/blog/why-reform/why-reform-for-americas-security/

- We don't need reform, we need to enforce current laws. If there is reform, i say we use the exact policy on immigration that mexico uses.
- Too long to read. There is nothing wrong with our immigration now we just need to follow the rules already set down. When I came to the States I had to have a Police clearance and a complete medical and show that I could support myself.
- I would agree, however in your thesis, enforcement doesn't come until later. I contend that enforcement of employment laws and the fining and jailing of employers first would solve much of the current illegal immigration issues.
- Do you REALLY think that millions of illegal aliens, already working in the US will line up to pay fees and fines just so they can work legally and pay taxes? Are you really that naive? Why would they pay fees and wait for visas when they can pay a smuggler less, and work without having to pay taxes? "A seemingly random enforcement regime targets ordinary immigrant workers and families" Interesting that your article would refer to illegal aliens (which IS a federal crime, by the way) as 'ordinary immigrant workers and famalies'.
- 1. The last time we amnestied, the Federal Government was not allowed to check the back ground on many of the people who applied for amnesty. 47% of them turned out to have lied on their amnesty papers... should not have gotten in. 2. Mexico witholds information on their citizens. We have NO... NONE.... NO idea who most of the people are, and we know we have folks with the super good I.D.'s that are going to really be tough to find. No way... NO WAY at all can we provide amnesty for those people and maintain any security at all in the United States. 3. I don't want something over 20 million catholics loyal to the Catholic Church of Mexico allowed citizenship in this country. Nancy Pelosi along with a lot of the Congress is Catholic, and I believe that is the main reason they immigration laws have NOT... not been enforced. Frankly... when the pope said hop.. Congress did just that, and that is a totally, completely unworkable arrangement.... if not criminal. NO amnesty. Deport them as the law tells us should be done, and get the rate of immigration way, way down. The people should choose who comes here... not dolts in Congress.
- We do need immigration reform and I bet the people that said we don't, didn't even read your facts.
- I AGREE 100%. @ Joel W, can you provide some links? you always seem to have a lot of numbers when answering questions, but never supply a source. Where are you pulling those numbers from?
- Honestly its just plain stupid to push against immigration reform, and i agree totally on the opinions stated into this question.by not reforming the system and keeping the laws the same will just continue the problems we have today. People need to get real and see that the laws we have in place now are NOT WORKING and haven't been since we made them.(part of a law being a good one is being able to enforce it and obviously out govt doesn't want to or cant) i agree that the people who would be legalized are not the threat to this country and we should be focused on people who immigrate illegally to traffic humans and drugs, and recruit gang members. that is the REAL problem. as far as why people would be against Comprehensive Immigration reform, i'm really not sure. But the people who are do not seem to be aware of the FACTS on both sides of the debate, and do not have an understanding of the issue. ex. Joel W so what if the people are Catholic WHO CARES! this country was built upon many things as well as FREEDOM OF RELIGION. and the idea that immigrants would not want to pay a fine to be legal is ridiculous, and whomever doesn't want to pay is dumb and can just be deported, so why even bother saying that as a valid point. anyways Immigration reform is definitely needed and should be passed SOON.
- Do you allow anybody to invade your house and start committing felonies? Why should we allow anybody to invade the US and start committing felonies? When you start letting people who break into your house, and start committing crimes against your family (10,000+ killed by illegal aliens yearly, rape, child molestation, murder, etc.) live there and you also have to pay for them! After all they will NOT be paying enough to you so you can send the kids to school never mind all the other bills they incur (medical, water, sewer, etc.), Then maybe you should start talking about the US doing the same thing! Why should the US taxpayer have to pay for these criminals? 2 of my neighbors have lost children to drunk Mexican nationals in the US illegally AND you think they should pay for that as if it were a privilege? Report, deport, repeat until all criminal invaders are gone! If there were no illegal, immoral, criminal invaders in the US we would have a lot less crimes, border problems, drugs, etc. After all who do you think are committing these crimes? Hint: It's not the bear in the woods!
- You people will try anything to get your agenda done! It is not reform - it is amnesty. Enforcement resources are going after employers. Moratorium on all immigration!
- this is funny. i can just see it now a bunch of hopeful illegals lining up waiting to have back ground checks, while in the back of the building inside a hugh garage multiple buses being filled with the rejects. come on folks the illegals will not do anything to right themselves no less have a back ground check. my guess 85% of them have some form of criminal record i.e. driving without a license, fake i.d. stolen i.d. no they wont show up and get right,
- Wrong!! There are legal options, the FACTS are ILLEGALS CHOOSE not to go through them. They rather ABUSE the system!!! We have immigrants from all over the world who have gone through the NORMAL and LEGAL process!!! The system takes longer now, because we have more immigrants coming here.
- great example on why it's good for us tax paying citizens.
- The only reform that is needed in this country is the prosecution and punishment of ordinary illegal immigrants to the fullest extent of the law. In other words, our laws need to be enforced. Our country is not a charity where the rest of the world is allowed to help themselves to our resources. We are still a sovereign nation not a pawn in a one world government.
