Is Using An Alias In Your Business Legal?

Would you know if it's legal to use an alias in business? Here's an example Registered Business Name: Super Duper Weight Loss Registered Under : John Doe John doesn't want to reveal his real name to the public for privacy reasons so he decides to use an alias in his business named "Peter Patterson." "Peter Patterson" will be known to the public as the owner. So in the marketing (youtube videos) it will be John Doe playing as "Peter Patterson" giving away fantastic tips to promote Super Duper Weight Loss. The SDWL product itself will make a mention of Peter Patterson being the owner. The only way to find out the real owners name (John Doe) is by checking who registered the Super Duper Weight Loss business name. I live in Ontario and read from an American blog that using an alias is fine as long as you don't lie and mislead the audience. Is that true or is there more I should know? Thanks

Public Comments

  1. It is only illegal to use an alias if you do it to defraud someone. Radio DJs, TV anchors, Actors use aliases. So do bill collectors.
  2. It is called a fictitious business name and is hardly unusual. How many people do you know named Super Duper Weight Loss? Joe would have to use a fictitious name to attract customers.
