Software engineering problems of producing a wide range of up to date generic software for automotive industry?

Now, to all of you software engineers in the automobile industry or free thinkers, suppose you are presenting your knowledge and findings to managers to break into software market for automobile software industry, what are the challenges based on your own perspectives of producing software (embedded or not) for automotive industry? Addressing aspects in SE as well as project management SE issues (E.g. requirements engineering, quality specifications, safety critical oriented). Thanks.
