Would you rather the government nationalise more things so you dont have to pay taxes?
If banks, train networks, phone companies etc. were nationalised, then the government would receive a revenue from that, and then we would have to pay less taxes? Of course, car companies and consumer products should remain in a competitive market economy, because its in the best interests of the consumer. Why doesn't the government nationalise enough things so that nobody ever needs to pay tax?

- LMAO! Have you been watching government for the past 40 odd years?
- The government cant make the post office break even, why would you even think that they would be capable of operating more businesses? NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The U.S. Postal Service reported a $3.8 billion loss in the 2009 fiscal year, and plans to propose to Congress in 2010 that it drop Saturday delivery. The agency already reduced expenses by $6 billion during the year ended Sept. 30.
- And the government get's it's money from WHERE, again? You are either being really sarcastic...or you are just plain stupid. Not sure which.
- ....You went to public school, didn't you? This is a bit...ridiculous.
- I'm thinking that nationalization could actually increase taxes in some circumstances, whether for investment into the nationalized business, not making a profit, or just misuse of funds.
- did you ever have a lunchroom worker that put portions on your plate like she was paying for it outta her own pocket? my answer is NOPE. i don't want anymore lunchroom ladies controlling Anything in my life./
- when the government operates its always at a loss. train networks- have you ever heard of Amtrak? operates at a loss in the millions every year paid for by your tax dollars. banks- the government can't handle its own finances. so banks and transportation is not consumer based? honey you need to learn a few things.
- Well. There's no way the US could maintain it's mammoth military if all those things went private for one. Also, privatized police and or fire departments are an obvious recipe for disaster. Without subsidies from the government from time to time, the airline and train systems would likely collapse. Even Ryan Air in Europe needs bailouts sometimes. Having no public schools would result in a completely unbalanced society where many children never attend school. Then militias grow, then civil war starts. So basically they don't do it because it would be the end of the US. It can be easily seen in African tribal nations. They do not pay tax, therefore they do not create infrastructure, therefore they cannot defend themselves / maintain order, therefore it is chaos. EDIT: I bet most people agree with my above points, but people are too stubborn to admit taxes have a purpose and they just want to scream "No taxes!" and not have to think about the repercussions.
- You sound very new to observing economics in real life.
- Any revenue the government collects from nationalized entities still comes from you. For instance -- if you take a ride on a government railroad, who is going to pay for the trip? The fuel, the food, the iron in the tracks, the wood in the ties .. the maid ... the cooks, the pillows? Who pays for that? One way or another, the government class has to be fed, and the only place that the money comes from is the private sector. ~.
- The government has a railway project. It's called Amtrak and it has been broke since it was founded (and constantly bailed out by taxpayers. Also UPS and Fed Ex are both turning a profit while the post office flounders in debt. The government even tried it's hand at loans with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. There are some things the government could get in the business doing including renting out it's GPS system, charging for International protection (for nations and businesses) and collection the money spent on illegal immigration. Of course some of those fees will be paid by consumers as sort of a tax. For instance if Germans paid taxes to keep U.S. bases in Germany, the products coming to the U.S. would be slightly more expensive as part of the cost of doing business.
- Just look at state rail in Australia and Australia post which loses your mail half the time. Capitalism is like Natural selection, the best survive and the worst die and allocation of resources is best left to the free market.
