Can someone please explain what affiliate marketing is for a self-help program or Bible program?

I met a guy who is an affiliate marketer for self help programs. What does this mean and how does it work?

1. It sounds like a biblical pyramid scheme. Don't forget that pyramids are magical; you just have to believe.
2. Con man. He should get a proper job like firefighter or plumber.
3. It means he is an intermediary between the merchant and the seller. He gets a cut of the sale is someone buys it from him. Kind of like a commission.
