- I have been an investor in the financial markets for over 40 years and I still take classes to learn more. The markets change, the tools change and the products available change. At the moment I am reticent to rely on my skills at predicting the direction of the market in general or any particular financial instrument in particular. Therefore, I use strategies that have a defined profit and a defined loss and are biased toward a sideways market. In particular, I trade credit spreads, usually in the for of an iron condor. If your search foo is good, you will come up a host of good sites that explain the technique. When trying a new technique, I usually paper trade for a few months to understand the nuances of the technique. My favorite platform for trading (money and paper) is ThinkOrSwim.

- Don't take anyone's word on stock tips or "hot buys". You need to do your homework. Start with 10 or so "blue chip" stocks and watch how they react to market forces for at least 3 months. After that you can weed out the losers and add some other winners to your port folio. If you rush in to try and "scalp" or momentum trade you'll end up getting steam rollered 90% of the time. Try something like http://www.howthemarketworks.com with a paper (play money) account to see if you have what it takes. Just remember, Trading play money and trading real money are not the same. With play money it's easy to be reckless because there are no consequences if you're wrong. So treat every trade as though it were your real money account. Good luck!
