How should I handle this situation at my job?

I have been working for a Social Networking company for almost 7 months. I work hard everyday and I feel that I am getting the shaft. First thing is we have many tasks to do, and it seems like I am the only one to ever answer the phone. When it rings the man to my right (who hasn't worked there but 3 or 4 months) just waits for me to answer it and doesn't have any motivation. He has either went home sick or went home early more than a few times and no one has ever said anything to him! It's ridiculous! Then our boss shows up whenever the heck he wants. I am so STRESSED out because I work hard and never get reconized. Then, the district manager came for a "check" of our district and stated we had to make changes, because it appears we don't do anything...are you kidding me?!? He makes the big bucks, but doesn't fail to notice his employees...some manager huh? On top of all this we make crap money, but I don't want to look for another job because I am trying to get into college in the next year...the sooner the better. Plus, another person who's only been at the company maybe 2 or 3 months more than I have has already got a couple of raises, and I haven't seen squat. Frankly I am sick of this, but I can't quit because the job market sucks...and I don't want to start a job only to quit a few months later.

  1. Come work for me, I fold socks for a living.
  2. I wish I had 5 bucks for every job like that I have had in the past...I worked my backside off while coworkers were disgustingly lazy and got away with it. There have been very few times that I really received the accolades and money I deserved. Hang in there, get into school and put it behind you. Look at it is job experience and an income in this horrible economy. Thank God it will not be the last job you will ever have. Good luck.
  3. Welcome to the world of crap jobs! You'll find as time goes on that the people who do nothing do that because they know if they don't do it someone like you will. You are enabling them to continue doing nothing, especially since the boss couldn't care less who does what, as long as it is done. Most likely no one ever will say anything to him about his lack of motivation. The boss seems to have the SAME lack of motivation, so there you are! Stop stressing about things you can't change. Crap money is the new economy way -- businesses are downsizing and doing with fewer employees (and paying less) to make more profit and force fewer employees to do more. That is happening EVERYWHERE, even healthcare. I am a nurse, and in the past (before the economy tanked), if the hospital treated us like crap, we simply said "outta here!", and had another job within 2 weeks. It's not that way anymore. I quit my job in May due the boss being a bi***, and I have YET to find another job! And that's in NURSING, with a NURSING SHORTAGE. The hospitals are simply making due with who they have, and not hiring anyone else. The moral of the story? Do your job, and NOTHING more. If you get a performance appraisal that says you need to do more, ONLY THEN should you worry about it. Until then it's not your job to police your peers, and both they (and unfortunately your boss too) will think of you poorly if you try. It sucks, but it seems to be the new way of the world.
