Why are there adverts appearing on unrelated web pages for items i previously searched for?

I have recently noticed that after doing a search for an item (or holiday) when I am browsing unrelated websites there are sometimes adverts featuring exactly what I was searching for previously. Surely this can't be a coincidence, it is targeted marketing, but how did the unrelated website get the information that I previously provided in a search engine? Do I have some spy software that has been installed without my permission or is it something that happens to everybody on the internet these days?

1. Whilst you were searching you were looking at many pages with that particular item in mind, and was noticing a lot of irrelevant pages, your concentration has now changed and since finding what you are looking for, you are not seeing the hundreds of irrelevant pages you are looking at, but only the few pages that your mind has yet to stop looking for

3. Maybe it's cookie thing. try cleaning up your cookies and try again.
