Why do we need to take care of the destitute and needy?

I seriously don't understand the idea of having programs such as medicare, medicaid, food stamps,housing subsidies or anything other transfer programs. It takes capital from people that drive the economy to people that don't contribute anything and take more out of it. If we don't provide for people including the elderly or disabled, the free market corrects for it in one of two ways. Either they are forced to develop greater human capital, get more jobs or die. The free market and capitalism solves all problems in the LONG RUN without government intervention or theft. For example, Investment, Commercial and Shadow Banks were providing no money down mortgages, secularized them, people defaulted and the entire global system blew up. Governments decided to bail out firms yet liquidity still froze. In the U.S. 90% of the people still had jobs, large and medium sized firms still had access to capital markets. Only small business and poorly managed firms suffered. If the government let the market clear them out the economy would be fine.

5. Because we are now in a position to provide every person with food, clothing, shelter, and healthcare, but capitalists would rather let people continue to live in destitution than use their mammoth profits to help.

Since you don't understand why we need a safety net or social services in this country, and since one of your solutions is for the needy to die, then there doesn't seem to be much point in discussing this with you. Your idea is not unlike the Republican health plan alternative: 1) Don't get sick. 2) If you do get sick, die quickly.
8. Oh, yeah. Your idea of taking care of the rich and powerful makes WAY more sense. Did your mother beat you when you were a kid or something?
9. Because we are supposed to be a civil society, but we need to do it more in a way that "Teaches a Man To Fish" Rather than "Gives a Man a Fish" which is what most of our assistance programs do. For example, I am on disability for blindness for a correctable condition, I just cannot afford the surgery yet. I am saving for it, but I have now been on it for two years, and I KNOW it is going to be difficult to re-enter the work-force BECAUSE of it, and there really is not Vocational rehab available that I am aware of, which would be money well spent, don't you think? But the government would RATHER have me dependent on it, or at least the Left side of the aisle would, thinking I will want to vote for them because they will fight to keep me dependent. Medicare and social security are supposed to help seniors who should have worked and contributed all their lives. Sure not all have, but there are plenty who DID, and never lived long enough to see it either, so as long as congress stops raiding the piggy-bank, there should always be enough for those.
