Can I use an unlocked US mobile in the UK?

I'm in the mood for a new phone to replace my E71, but most of the phones available through the highstreet shops in the UK don't really do it for me. The US market seems to have a much better selection of handsets I like and at better prices, but will they be compatible with the UK GSM aND 3G networks?
