How to get job experience as a game designer?

Im about to be a junior in high school and I want to enter the engineering field. I have an older cousin who is a computer programmer and says that being a software designer and game designer is a bit different, and companies might not accept you. Im wondering on what do I need to study in college to be a game designer? I want to work for the video game market, specifically for Infinity Ward. I checked on the jobs tab and it said : Infinity Ward is scouting for top talent to continue our mission of delivering the most epic gaming experiences to fans. If you think you have what it takes to work on the world's biggest shooter franchise, send a cover letter and your resume to us along with any examples of your experience and expertise. How can I get experience if I want a job out of college? My grades are pretty decent, as I plan to improve them next year to get into a decent engineering school. I have a 32 on the ACT and 1990 on SAT. Im just posting my grades because the site said top talent (yeah I know grades dont mean talent but it helps). If anyone has any comments please feel free to post. I checked on the website and it says that there are software engineers and game designers. Can you also explain the need for both?

  1. Seeing as you're only in highschool, I can forgive you for wanting to work for something as terrible as Infinity Ward. It'd be best if you took up some computer programming classes, and maybe some actual videogame design during your college career. Remember, video game design isn't exactly a successful field to work in, and you're more than likely going to be out of a job for quite a while before ANYONE decides to hire you. EDIT: To put it simply, Game Designers create the game, Software Engineers make sure that the game will work when you put it into your PC/Console.
