How do people get so many websites with affiliate marketing?

I understand that godaddy has some pretty good deals on domains. So i get that people buy them in bulk for adsense and affiliate marketing. but arent hosting services like $10 bucks a month per domain? I was wondering if anyone knows of the way this works and the most cost effective method.
